I worked in the Machining dept of Bendix Corp in St. Joseph Mi where this "Hydro-Boost" brake booster was conceived and manufactured in 1973. Spent a year setting up the Machining dial index machines to machine 3 units at a time. We were able to assemble and ship 5500 units per day.
I asked at the time and never got a good answer why they named it the way they did. Seemed more appropriate to call it "Hydra-Boost" as Hydro means water.

You're looking at the money matters all wrong. You're still making money while working on your own vehicles.
To spend a dollar in order to pay someone else. You pay them with dollars that you've paid income taxes on already.
So for example, you must earn $1.20 in order to pay a $1.00 for the work.
So if you do your own work.
For each $1.00 you save it's $1.20 you don't have to earn to pay it.
And in a way it adds to your actual income potential.
So saving $1,000.00 in labor is equivalent to earning $1,200.00 more then you did that year.
      And so on.
The expense would have cost you money no matter what your kind of work you did for an income.
So your actually making 120% during the time your working on your own vehicle.
Or whatever your tax rate may be.
It's like getting a raise temporarily.
But don't ever let the IRS know about this OR THEY MAY TRY TO FIND A WAY TO TAX ON FOR WORKING ON OUR OWN THINGS.
I just remembered. The benefit and the raise is even better and higher than I've already explained.
You can add the sales tax too. In my state that means an extra 4.5% in my old state it would be 8%.
It's a nice raise and you know you can trust the guy that did the work, and you know it was a job well done and no corners cut.
      ENJOY

Can't believe how clear your videos are and you are great at placing the camera where we can see so well at the area you are working on. Gets us right in the action without the grease and dirt and body contortions that you as the mechanic have to deal with. Just gotta say though, I missed the brake fluid application opportunities during the rebuild. Despite what some say, I think the red truck is a great addition. Should send it to Robby Layton and co to overhaul and make it like new.

Nice to see a mechanic work on their own stuff. When I was a teen many years ago my engine worked on at a local garage. When I went to pick it up the mechanic was working on a Chrysler sedan and had valve covers off. I saw at least an inch of sludge on top of the heads. I made a comment to the mechanic "who is the idiot that never changed their oil?" Much to my dismay he said "that would be me". I learned a valuable lesson to think before you speak. Great Video!

While the trucks in the air, you can crank engine and turn the wheels if you have a way on yours to disable start up.
That purges the hydra-boost and steering system from aeration bubbles and the tech fills the fluid while returning air to the reservoir.
Saves time on a lot of rigs that we would purge and wait on to have the bubbles rise.
We couldn't drive ours on city streets till we purged them.
    Dealership procedure.
Safer for brakes, steering, etc and we moved trucks in groups to get one out and others in.
You're lucky having the shop to yourself.
    You smudged the wife unit.

My 1988 F- 2fitty, spent it's first 20 years as a ranch truck in Wyoming. The next ten hauling a hay trailer in the fields no services just add to it. I bought it with blown head gaskets rusted out freeze plugs. I put gaskets and plugs in timming chain flat bed new brakes all the way arround a few body panels from the salvage yard. Since it's a gaser 460ci big block ferd. Now it's hooked to a horse trailer hauling anything that will fit. It's over 2 million + miles of solid axel 4x4 big block goodness with r12 ac. We go rock crawling, horse back riding, camping, and drag cows and cowboys home when the new stuff won't start. -40c diesel is kinda useless. Always keep a gasser for emergency, and it is 10,000 lb fueled no trailer.

At 32:38 the brake booster on the screen is actually a hydraulic Hydromax unit, not a vacuum assist booster. A Hydromax booster actually uses an on-vehicle hydraulic supply like the hydroboost. What Ray is pointing to is the redundant electric hydraulic pump that is bolted to the booster. It kicks in in the event the engine stalls and hydraulic pressure drops - it's a backup.

I had to change those same lines from the pump to the booster on my 2007 Duramax. Fortunately, it was all I had to do. Not the rest of the parts you changed out. I had the same trouble getting the lines connected to the pump. One of them took me an hour and a half to get it started. It is one of the reasons I hate doing mechanic work. It takes so long to get things apart, then you have to struggle to get everything back together. One of the reasons I enjoy your channel. You are so chilled and don't get frustrated like I do. I curse the engineers every time I have to do mechanic work.

Fun fact: when General Motors introduced the "converted" 350 cu. in. diesel engines they had both hydro-boost AND vacuum systems. How did it have vacuum, you ask? GM engineers came up with a camshaft driven diaphragm type vacuum pump that was installed in the same hole where the distributor went. That vacuum system was used to operate the HVAC controls and cruise control servo while the hydro-boost was used to assist the brake system.

That's just because (at least for me) you go out of your way to fix ancillary items that aren't really necessary. For example I have a 1989 CRX B20 powered and when I swapped it it took me like a week because I completely unwrapped the wiring harness and ran all oem wires from another harness to upgrade it like it was OEM, retaped it just like Honda would have. Also fabricated custom brackets for some things I didn't have to. Lots of little touches that aren't really necessary and I wouldn't do to a customer car.

I always found that putting time into working on my own vehicles, forces me to be extra vigilant in how I operate said vehicle. Especially on my Semi, also on my pickup. (Which is an aging power stroke)
