2021 Honda CRF300L and CRF300 Rally Review First Ride

  • Ever since the, “You meet the nicest people on a Honda” campaign, Big Red has been positioning itself as an ambassador for motorcycling. Not only by offering a range of motorcycles to attract new riders throughout the years, but also by promoting responsible recreation. Since the early 1970’s, Honda has been producing dual-sport motorcycles. Through the years, the popular XL line was offered in a wide range of displacements - many of which stayed in production into the late ‘80s.
The CRF250L was the latest iteration of quarter-liter dual-sport motorcycles to come from Honda. Released in 2012 as a 2013 model, Honda has since sold more than 35,000 units - including the Rally model, which was released in 2016 for the 2017 model year. The rising popularity in off-road and dual-sport motorcycles - combined with the recent COVID-induced shot in the arm - has made finding certain models all but impossible on dealership floors. This was, of course, exacerbated by production and shipping delays that industries the world over have experienced as of late. Honda had hopes of the CRF300 models landing Stateside much earlier this year, but fate had other plans. What matters though is that it’s here now and should be hitting your local dealerships any day. So, let’s have a look at the 2021 Honda CRF300L & Rally.

I think the 300 Rally is the bike that people who actually "adventure" tour on huge 1250's etc really *need* - they just don't want it. Whether it's vanity or personal insecurity or whatever the reason, the stupid expensive "ADV" monster bikes keep selling. For any REAL offroad - or even just real BAD road touring - I firmly believe you'll have more fun overall on a little bike. BDR? South America? RTW? There's no real reason to take a 600lb 150hp bike, and a whole lot of reasons NOT to. And don't tell me you need to do 110mph on the highway, the 300 Rally will do 70mph all day long on the highway. For me, and most everyone else, that's more than enough. OK, maybe not Nick Sanders, but he's a special case. Look him up, it's worth it LOL.
    Change my mind.

@Kattrap Not that different, if you set up the bike properly. I could ride my CRF250L all day in total comfort. To each their own I guess. Ride safe :)

If you're eating highway miles and doing full scale ADV riding a middle weight bike, like a T7 is the way to go. Bikes in the 300cc range don't have enough power for serious highway use and the low weight allows the wind to blow them everywhere. I do agree though that anything breaking the 500lb mark is basically a touring bike though. A lighter bike is going be a lot more fun. Side note: people can literally buy a T7 and a CRF300L for what a lot of larger bikes cost.

      Nope you nailed it!
Like I said what does DUAL sport mean? If it means on road/off road then why wouldn't the Rally be the best, with it's screen, larger gas tank, better lights and better road suspension?

Got my 300L last week and have put 1000km on it now and I'm just in love with this machine! Grew up on a Beta RR so this was a perfect choice for me. It just does it all so good. Took it to an enduro track and this bike just plowed up everything! I'm at 120kg so I'm a phat phuk and had no issues with bottoming the shocks, it all comes down to balancing your body correctly to the obstacle, but again, I didn't do it at super-high speeds, and didn't do jumps.. I will change the shocks at some point when more is available, so I can go do harder stuff.

Couple months ago I picked up a 2018 CRF250 rally & absolutely love it got it for right around 7K otd & it only had 170 miles on it! I don't go all crazy when I ride so it's more than a good enough bike I looked at the 300 they had 1 available but Non abs & weird circumstances & it was over 2K more than the 250 rally. I figured it's not even near worth it for me I'd rather have a 250cc & spend 2k less. 💯👍👍 Nice video 📸

I called Honda Powersports Chattanooga TN 9/28/2001 looking for the 2021 CRF300L Rally. Was told two to three months wait. They called next day and delivered it to me 9/30/2021. I saved $1700 over another dealer in GA. No dealer fees, no delivery fees. MSRP and $30 administrative fee only. I called 10 other dealers and no one had one of these in stock and did not know when they would get one. My salesman was Gus and very pleased with this purchase/service by dealer.

Adventure tour in Idaho for days to weeks in the Idaho desert and high country.
I have the Rally. I put a new shock, exhaust and ECU plus some other features. No way would I be able to adventure and explore the entirety of roads, single track and dirt roads with a larger bike! This bike with a few upgrades is still cheaper and does more than just about any other dual sport.
Never did/do I think I needed a bigger 400cc. Ever! You are limited in your exploration with anything bigger. In fact I came across a person with a T7 recently trying the same route. Luckily I came across to help.
Rally is the way no doubt for serious adventure and exploring!!

great video thank you; Between the Kawasaki KLX300 and the Honda CRF300L Look at the DYNOJET grafts Kawasaki does have a bit more HP KLX 23.4 vs CRF 22.7 but only at 8,000 RPM But from 4,500 to 7,500 the Honda has more. The Kawasaki jumps up at 8,000 then drops off, so the power is fore a very short time, compared to the Honda. For torque the Honda 16.7 to Kawasaki 15.4 and from 4,500 to 8000 Honda has a good bit more. Engen wise the Honda is far ahead, but the Kawasaki I am told the the suspension wins. But I think Hondas is plenty good for what I will be doing. The difference comes in as Honda made the stroke longer and Kawasaki made the bore larger. Honda by increasing the stroke got a lot more usable torque and HP. Bough bikes are pretty well matched up to 4,500 rpm then Honda takes over, in HP and Torque until 7,500 rpm then they are pretty close again. I took a good look at them bough and for my needs the Honda wins. And I have always been a Suzuki and Kawasaki fan.

But I plan to take it slow and easy, at 73 no need for speed. Pluss the softer suspension is much easer on old joints. For the type of riding I will be doing the power and torque set up on the CRF 300 L is much better take a look at the charts.

I have the 450. Slowly making it more a rally...the nice thing about this 300 is that it's way detuned and requires very little maintenance (I used to own the 250L). The 450 is basically a race engine, and runs pretty hot and mean, requires oil changes every 1000 km (also has a very low oil capacity, like 1.14 L I think), and the manual says a new piston at 20,000 km. The 250L oil change interval is ~13,000 km (I'm sure the 300 is pretty much the same) . The power of the 450 is cool though :-) Always trade-offs..

When they say dual it surely can't mean street riding. If it's referring too off road touring , then the Rally wins hands down, if it's a reference to on road/off road performance then again the Rally wins.
