In today's video we're swapping out my old, tired 2013 Mac Pro (Quad-Core) for my brand new M2 Pro Mac mini. This new Mac is getting installed in my livestream setup for use with Ecamm Live. I'm using Migration Assistant to transfer the data from my Mac Pro to the mini, and - by chance - Plugable had sent me their 16-1 Thunderbolt 4 Docking Station which ends up saving me when I needed to connect a second HDMI monitor to my new Mac mini...

How are you setting up your new M2 or M2 Pro Mac mini? And what upgrades did you get if any? đȘđ„Šđ§Čđ
Happen to learn this : czcams.com/video/sNysFMte5wI/video.html .Thanks đđ
Loved the edit on this one! Felt very much like just hanging out with you and playing with fun gear.
good point...in the edit
Yes. YES! This is what I think about when I do these kinds of videos. I just want it to feel like we're hanging out. So glad you got that vibe. That's exactly what I was going for.
I liked your approach, not your typical Mac set-up video. Looking forward to seeing how the whole Ecamm streaming setup works out!
Thanks, Keely! Gotta land some sponsorships so I can get that deck link and enclosure. Thanks for watching!
I canât believe theyâre still making hubs with usb 2.0. I literally just bought a new one yesterday to get an all-3.0 version, cos I AINT waiting forever for my footage to offload. Also somehow didnât know the livestream room was next door - I forget your house logistics. Also also; the first video where I make an âappearanceâ in the livestream comments đ
Yeah, I'm not sure why USB 2.0 either. The only thing I can think of is maybe for those little dongles some Bluetooth mice and keyboards make you use? Other than that, what's the point? Why not just make it USB 3.0? Maybe it keeps the cost of the unit down?
And yeah, the house logistics can be tricky. I should use the 2nd angle to do a quick "here's the layout of the studio" for everybody so they can get their bearings. Haha.
Cool presentation! đđ»đđ»đđ»
Thanks for watching!
The Mac Mini Pro is a beast - will serve me as a neat little WFH setup in combination with an LG 32 Ergo for a few years đ€©
Isn't it??? So awesome. Sounds like a slick WFH setup!
looks like a useful addition
Should help! As soon as I get the deck link purchasedâŠ
Lol just bought this today. Perfect timing
Congrats! Enjoy it! What configuration?
Thanks!
No, THANK YOU! Appreciate the SuperThanks!
Iâve been running the same Mac mini for around 8 years now, always been happy with how it runs, itâs just really slowed down the last year or two. So Iâve been thinking of just replacing it with the new one anyways.
Didnât actually know about migration assistant so that will help me out. I originally went from windows to make when I got the mini. Last windows pc I had broke after 3 months, luckily managed to get my money back and sunk that in to the Mac.
This was a great video mate, pretty different to a usual review. đđ»
I think mine was a bit overkill for a dedicated live-streaming computer, but I'm glad I have it. Excited to turn it back on and get it ready for streaming again!
@@matthewTobrien better to have overkill thenâŠwell⊠underkill?
Sounds great man! What is it you stream? And is it here or twitch?
Nice vid.. It looks like your studio space and equipment never end đ§ Is there a second room with another setup?
Yup! I have a main studio area thatâs like a living room in my walkout basement. And then thereâs an adjoining room where I store my gear and have an entirely different desk just for livestreaming. Everything in this video is in that adjacent studio/storage room. đ
Nice video! This is exactly the M2 Pro Mac Mini configuration that I'm considering to order. Why did you go for the basic CPU-GPU and not the upgraded 12-core CPU - 19-core GPU? Is the extra cost not justified by the expected computational gain?
I think it was an extra $300 to upgrade the M2 chip, but I felt that it just wasn't necessary since this isn't my daily driver, and I think the base GPU cores will be able to handle my livestreaming no problem once I get the Deck Link and PCIe enclosure.
Great video. Whatâs the advantage of E cam over the atem?
The big thing right now for me for Ecamm is being able to pull up comments from live chat and make them visible on screen. But as soon as I get the Deck Link and PCIe enclosure Iâll be able to make really cool scene layouts with more graphics, etc. Check out Doc Rockâs livestreams and youâll see what I mean. Just search YT for âDoc Rock Ecammâ.
I have a Mac mini m2 pro and a MacBook Pro from 2019 & a lg monitor but I donât want to spend over 1k on a good Apple screen so I wanna use the Mac mini with my MacBook pro
Hmmmm, donât think thatâs possible⊠đ€
Unfortunately, I will not be setting up an M2. I'm still using my M1 13-inch pro. I would love to upgrade to a newer MacBook, which supports multiple monitors. I love the set up video. Peace and Safe Travels
You can use something like the Plugable dock combined with DisplayLink software to get more monitors connected to Macs that have a 1 or 2 monitor limit. The resolution/quality takes a slight hit, but for every day productivity itâs perfectly fine.
Nice set up! This is unrelated so no worries if no idea, but as someone aspiring toward freelance with FCP and hopefully learning Avid for some some assistant editing work in LA, do you think the M2 Pro base model, or even the 14inch base MacBook M1 Pro would be enough for those type purposes, assuming I'm fine transcoding proxies and having external storage and not doing a ton of effects or multitasking while in the NLE?
I can't speak to the performance of Avid on Apple silicon. I wish I could! I do have a few editor friends and contacts in LA and the gentleman with whom I'm closest - last I checked - was still using a 2010 Mac Pro in his home editing setup (he edits a network television show) with an older install of Avid. Not sure if that's by stubborn choice or if it's out of necessity because the show is stuck on an older version of Avid and they're afraid to update.
I don't think you'd need to make proxies, though, because Apple Silicon can easily play back various RAW codecs with - what I've been told - zero issues. My editing workflow, admittedly, isn't terribly taxing - I'm just editing 4K 10-bit XF-AVC footage from my C300 MkII, and my M1 Pro MacBook Pro and my M1 Max Mac Studio chew through it no problem.
I think the M2 Pro base SOC is good for assistant editing, but I'd upgrade to the 32GB of unified memory for sure.
@@matthewTobrien Thank you so much for your detailed, helpful response!!
You're absolutely welcome! Thanks for being a part of the channel!
will my Apple M2 mini mac will I be able to use fiber optics? Thnaks.
Not sure....
Iâm still waiting on delivery, just wondering if adding the 10 gig Ethernet worth it?
Only if you plan on connecting it to a NAS. Which I plan to do.
Would love to know how much power the Mac Pro was consuming during your live stream and how much the Mac Mini consumes doing the same. =)
I know we spoke about this before - definitely want to figure that out. Just not quite sure how to do that.
@@matthewTobrien if you have an UPS normally they show current consumption. If not the only other easy way that comes to mind is with a smart outlet.
Ashamed to say I haven't bought a UPS and my buddy Cody keeps yelling at me as does my conscience. I'm getting on on the next payday. Do you have a recommendation? That would be very helpful. Then I figure out the power draw for you!
Congratulations
Thank you!
@@matthewTobrien I really learned lot of things from you and you one of the greatest here ! let me grow my channel up through easy use of Final Cut Pro

So glad to hear that! Appreciate you being a part of the channel!
Please, you are The only one in youtube that can help me at this mormente! Please...
I do zoom meetings and simultaneously stream to CZcams using Ecamm Live. My intention is to also stream to Instagram at the same time using the new multi stream function.
I currently have a macbook pro 2018, I7 with 32gb of RAM. It often slows down and my computer feels like it's going to fry. This occcurs with zoom + youtube via ecamm Live. I want to upgrade to the silicon chip, I thought of the Mac mini m2 pro, basic, with 16gb of RAM. Will it withstand this flow of mine? Zoom + 2 cameras + youtube + Instagram + recording? I use 2 monitors to control everything, and the presentations are with Keynote.
I might have to use OBS Studio to stream to Instagram, as I'll need to set up a specific scene for the 9X16 format, because I don't want to cut part of the presentation I'm going to do in Keynote. I believe that it is not possible to do this only in Ecamm Live using the multi stream feature.
Will this Mac mini m2 pro base model handle my type of streaming? Does it support Ecamm + OBS at the same time?
I think the M2 Mac mini would certainly be a big improvement, but you definitely are doing some advanced streaming. I donât even come close to what you have going on. If you can, I would make sure you get 24GB of unified memory. It may not be as much of a long term solution as an M2 Pro Mac mini, but this stuff can add up real quick. So I get it.
@@matthewTobrien thanks! I believe that for my needs, the Mac mini m2 pro will be the best choice, I just have doubts whether the entry-level version, with 16gb of RAM and no CPU and GPU upgrade ($300.00) will be enough.
I got the base M2 Pro and I anticipate it being enough. The extra GPUs in the upgrade certainly donât hurt, especially if youâre streaming in 4K.
@@matthewTobrien thanks! I will buy this m2 pro! đȘđŒ
Thanks for making this. I bought a new Mac Mini and I havenât had a desktop computer in a long time.
Your video made me realize I need to buy a cheap wired mouse for the desktop setup process.
Iâve been using laptops (that have touchpads) and wireless mice and trackballs for ages.
Forgot I wonât have a way to navigate the Mac mini setup without a wired mouse. Will have to pick one up soon. Good to have as a backup control in case my wireless trackball fails. Also for future setup of desktops.
Thanks for your helpful video.
How much knot the trash can
I think it was around $1800 when I bought it new in 2018 from B&H.
That thing is so small
Like, crazy small. Canât wait to test its power âĄïžâĄïž
