  • 1993 Breeders' Cup Classic
As Breeders' Cups go, it was a rather formful afternoon.
    And then came the Classic.
And with it, the hopes and dreams of thousands who placed a wager on the final Breeders' Cup race vanished as Arcangues blew past Bertrando in the stretch to win the $3-million race.
But despite, or perhaps because of, the monumental upset, spirits weren't down among the losers after the race. It was just one of those things. Who could have figured?
"I was looking forward to winning this race for the past month," said jockey Gary Stevens, who looked every bit the winner on Bertrando. "So I'm kind of surprised at my reaction, that I'm not upset. I would have been mad if my horse hadn't run the race he did. But my horse ran a great race. He gave everything he's got. He just got beat."
Even Bertrando's trainer, Bobby Frankel, who has been known to be a bit surly after a losing race, seemed resigned to the result.
"I'm really kind of in shock," said Frankel, who has not won with 22 Breeders' Cup entrants. "I guess it just wasn't meant to be. He ran great. I'm surprised that anybody was able to catch him. When Gary (Stevens) got off the horse he said, 'Where did that (son of a gun) come from?' and I had to say, 'I don't know.' I guess it just wasn't meant to be for me this year."
    Stevens thought Bertrando would win.

Best jockey post race interview ever: "I didn't even understand the instructions in the paddock!" "I don't even know how to pronounce his name!" XD Man, I love horse racing.

Bertrando played second fiddle to two of the most astounding BC performances ever: Arazi's, the Wonder Horse, juvenile win, and then this stunner.

"Bailey was 0 for 3 that day at Santa Anita when he arrived in the paddock fro the Classic. He knew little about his mount. Two weeks earlier, Bailey did not even think he was going to ride in the race. His prospective mounts were alternates in what was surely going to be an overflow field. But, at the last moment, Bailey picked up the mount on a French import, Arcangues, when the jockey originally scheduled to ride that horse, mike Smith, instead opted for Devil his Due"

Makes you wonder how many potentially great dirt horses were wasted on grass and vice-versa.

Shortly before the race went off, Arcangues' owner put an $80,000 win bet on his horse. Given the long odds, he got over a million back for the bet plus what he got from the purse. That horse paid for his retirement many times over.

Arcaungues was really 133 to 1, not because he wasn't good, it's because the betters here don't know much about him, he's got good pedigree and his trainer is one of the best in Europe

I had gone to Keeneland to bet the days races with my brother in law, Blaine (RIP) who introduced me to horse racing. We owned a duplex and came home and were watching the races downstairs in his bar. I was betting J D Bailey at the time a lot. My wife ran over from our side of the duplex ,ran down the stairs and said " Tell me you bet that horse"! Of which I had a good share across the board and the exacta a couple times. More than that though, thanks for the memories Jerry D Bailey. Your are

Arcangues had back problems off and on. When he warmed up like his back was feeling good and loose, I picked him to win. Wish I had been at the track that day!

"A medida que pasan los años, mucha gente me ha dicho que apostó Arcangues. Si todas esas personas le hubieran apostado, no habría pagado US $ 269 a ganador. Fue una extraña forma de ganar una carrera porque no tenía historia con el caballo , y en ese momento no había desarrollado una relación con Fabre o con los Wildenstein, era como una sola noche, resultó bastante bueno para mí. Probablemente nunca volverá a suceder, pero fue genial ese tiempo

That was an incredibly strong field. Bertrand, Devil His Due, Wallenda, Pleasant Tango, Missionary Ridge. I would have put that horse at 133,000 to 1.

I remember that. The horse never ran on dirt or our racing direction. His only positive was he had Jerry bailey. But that should have been enough. Bailey was a monster. Easy money. Wish I called it.

I had heard from a source close to the Wilderstein's thatr Arcangues had a disk problem in his back and when Andre Fabre tried him on a flat, hard surface he blew away his work mate. Fabre had saddled Jolypha, a three year old filly, to run third behind A.P Indy and Pleasant Tap. Arcangues was better than Jolypha and there was no A.P. Indy in this field. It was the biggest score of my life. The exacta with Bertrando paid $1,800 for every deuce.
