- 2018 BMW K 1600 B Review
www.revzilla.com/common-tread...
Somewhere between a sport-touring bike and a dresser; that’s where you’ll find the BMW K 1600 B. As a motorcycle with few (and by few, we mean just about zero) comparables on the road, the K 1600 B possesses a mixture of features that are rarely packed together in one place. In this review, Lemmy takes the high-priced, high-powered motorcycle for long rides and deep dives into the intricacies that set it apart from the pack.

Great video, as always. I saw this bike at the dealership and could not stop looking at it, both in detail and overall. The finish (including the engine casing) is wonderful, and I think the design as a whole works well. Also, the materials are first rate (great seat, for instance). I think Lemmy is right, that this bike will become a cult classic.
Lemme, I have watched this review a dozen times, you have done an awesome job in your educated and very personal depiction of what this specific machine is and does. Great review, and even greater job describing your individual experience. I prefer your reviews above motorcycle and other web reviews, continue the great reviews...
As a Victory Cross Country owner I am in love with the K1600 B.
I have owned 5 Harley’s and I currently ride a 2015 Electra Glide. I test rode this K1600B yesterday and I’m buying it. The extra power (160hp) can’t be explained, it’s like wrap drive, no Harley can be modified enough to keep up. The handling is like a sport bike and the comfort is beyond anything I have ever ridden. I think this is the future of baggers and Harley would have to match or exceed the features and power of this bike to get me to buy another one of theirs. I’m keeping my Electra Glide for Sturgis and other events but this thing will be my daily driver.
The K16 GT's throttle wide open is like jumping to light speed. TBH there's very little difference mechanically between the 3 variants. It's actually a huge benefit to the owner because that makes parts availability and maintenance a lot easier. A owner could easily accessorize a lower end model to be just like the top shelf model if they wanted to buy the parts afterwards (with exception of certain engine or transmission dependent abilities).
Went to Sturgis, cruise comptroller set a 90 across SD, 3 weeks ago, had a couple Harley try to keep up with the B played along wit them up to about 105 then just rolled on the throttle and left them like their engines had died.
I had a C500 mercedes try to race me on my way home from the dealer, that didn't last long. :D
The worst thing about the K-B is it is speed limited to 130 mph, had it up to that on the 4200 foot airport runway. On Hwy 212 Montana Sept 4, ran against the speed limiter, 130mph, and passed a couple simis doing 70-80 rock solid handling even at 130mph in the turbulence from the trucks. Cruised from Gillette, WY to Buffalo, WY at 105mph, 70 miles in less than 45 minutes.
ECU flash will fix it but you'll have to forum dive to find the guy who does it. Don't let the dealer reflash it though!
this is by far the best review video i have seen, and your channel is the best one on motorcycles. thanks. I bought a k1600B 3 months ago and love it ... I loved my street glide, but BMW takes it to a different level.
Scott Ragsdale I agree, went from a 17 street glide special to a k1600b. Very nice!
Finally a bike review equal to the car reviews I watch. Well done!
I love your reviews, I wish you would do more. Keep up the great work. Love you guys.
I dumped my old Harley Street Glide. For this one. And I’ll never look back
me too
I never owned an HD cause they never clicked for me. I was always attracted to the VROD but after hearing that the headlight on them is like a candle light, I let go. After owning the K16 GA for a year now, I got so hooked on this bike that I don't see myself riding any other bike company !!!! It is just an addiction.
That might be right but nothing is as satisfying as the rumble of an old school v twin
@@sid426_ That is correct for some LOL. The K1600 sounds like a prop airplane and I love that.
Kevin Voeks You talked me into it! I own two Harley’s and I’m happy with them but I miss my old BMW R 1200 c. Now I would love to have one of these k 1600 b as a third bike. Time to sell my 2 dirt bikes and head for BMW!
🤘🔥🤘
purchased mine last week. Agree on the throttle lag, but have learned to live with it. The bike is SO smooth and powerful. The seat is AWFUL over 50 miles (I have tailbone issues), ordered a sargent with backrest. I traded my GSA and won't look back.
What a great review Lemmy. As always.
Lemmy throttle lag is a present in the lower gears, the ride modes affect that too. Dynamic will get rid of a lot of response lag but until you gear up it won't be that noticeable. Dynamic does make that throttle very twitchy (GT rider).
I saw one at the dealer. It is such a beauty. If BMW can just lower the base a bit more, HD will be in a big trouble. Well, more trouble then they are currently. Just got a 16 k1600GTLE from a doctor and he got a new bagger. I never new how amazing the K is till I took the chance. I do not know how I can ride anything else after this. happy riding.
Excellent review, thanks Lemmy.
Another excellent review. I don't see this machine as competing against the Guzzi, I think it's a challenge to the Honda F6B. I would be interested in seeing you compare the K1600B to the 2018 Goldwing standard (the newest version of the discontinued F6B) when Honda makes it available for test ride.
See you made it down to Brandywine Airport and the AHMEC. I used to work across the street from there, and around the corner. Now, I live on the west coast, but it's always nice to see 'home' once in a while.
I appreciate the honest neutral review. You mentioned a lot of pros and cons. I agree it is stylish but not for everyone, I will not be giving up my GSA but I can appreciate a nice piece of metal. Cheers.
Nice video, liked the helicopter background, nice job dude😎
This is the best review on a bike I ever see, thanks a lot.
Lemmy's The Man when it comes to reviews...
Thanks

Plans for any optional rack and backrest like the Honda bagger options?
I’m currently owned a 2018 BMW K1600gtl and K1600b and a 2017 BMW R1200rt. Yes valve check and other items cost to maintain but as we all know Harley and other brands have problems too which I’ve owned including Indian Cheiftain. Cool thing is there’s brands and bikes for everyone.
I would be interested is seeing what gains this bike will see with Intake exaust and a power Commander added
It’s a tough call to say it’s a bagger platform.
Really looks like a larger street race bike.
Maintenance expenses would be a concern.
Maybe if someone showed the miles scheduled with expenses. That would help people make a decision to buy or pass.
It is a cool bike for sure.
Larry
Hey bro, you are the best, happy new year, from Texas
Great review. I’m confused. I’m on the fence R18B or K1600B or wait for new 2022 K1600B. I have a BMW GS to trade in.
I have a 15 'R12R and my buddy has a 16' Street Glide. As we were riding and switching bikes I thought if you could put the technology of the BMW with the comfort of the SG you'd have a great bike. The next week the K16B came out. I test rode it and it's amazing. It feels like a 600 lb bike, not like wrestling a bear on back roads on the SG. The gear assist pro is a must have once you've had it. Much smoother in the 1600 than my 1200 boxer engine. If I had a complaint it would be the front end styling. A little too much "sport bike" looking. HD definitely gets the win on the cool factor, but unfortunately that's it. The BMW is such a better bike in every other category it isn't really close. (For the record I love HD's too) BMW offers a modern bike while HD offers "heritage". I just can't see paying a premium for 20 year old technology. I'm going to wait for 19' to see if BMW makes a few tweaks based on initial feedback. Also curious to see how it sells and what accessories become available. My bet is BMW will do well with this "bagger". Good job as alway Lemmy

Actually there isn’t much that is “extra crap” about it. Everything is super useful. You ever had different windshields for touring and riding around town? Swapping them out is a pain. With this bike you can just press a button to lower or raise the shield.
Ever go on a big ride and it gets cold as shit? Heated seat and grips.
Ever sit at a light and roll back? Hill start assist locks you in place.
Like the wind blocking of fixed fairing but the headlight following through a corner of fork mounted fairings? The headlights turn with your leaning.
Get tired of locking and unlocking your bags? The key fob does that for you.
It’s a wonderful bike and you are missing out if you haven’t experienced those features.
So, I’ve been using a GTL for a couple of years and think I’m going to get a newer one but often take the boxes off for runs.. i would have a baggie but I don’t see a tail light cluster allowing this.. would be a nice mod if can be done..
Is there a way to make this bike shift at the handlebars?
If I buy a helmet and a visor from you guys will it be in the same box/shipping?
I think BMW has a real winner here. Combination of Full Dresser and Sportiness. I want a full dresser but something sporty too and I think they have accomplished both here don't need two bikes. Gotta get down to the local BMW dealer and get more Info.
This is a fantastic bike! As a 23 year old, I won't be buying it... yet. Only because I don't have the money or the time for touring. But when I do, this bike will be the one! I love how BMW kept performance as a big priority when designing this bike.
Hello friend, all right, I speak of Brazil?
Congratulations on the bike, I recently bought the same K1600 bagger, mine has already taken 12000 km rounds, I changed the tires putting the pirelli GT angel tires, and I went to the road to test them, but when I'm at a high speed the bike starts to float Ahead, at this speed stop you made, did you feel it?
Sorry for the english, but i'm using google tadutor.
Thanks

Great review lenny
My husband and I love how it seems quite nimble to maneuver this bike in the corners. Great bike loving it.
This beast is such a pleasure to ride. I can't even explain!!!!
@@alp3781 does this mean you have one?? Worth the money? Because i just saw a 2009 cbr1000rr for 6k in my area. I don't know what to get. Help would be appreciated
@@nirhaber6149 6k for 09 is very low. However, due to the fact it is a sport bike, you need to take it to a local dealer for a check up. It pays to spend 200.00 or so for that.
what gimbal connects easily for the Hero ?
Yes yes Yes! Been waiting for this!!!!
Awesome bike! Biggest problem for BMW is their dealer network. Sad, but that reason has kept me from buying more BMWs. X-owner of K1200LT and RT1200.
Good review Lem
Great review very well done
Peculiar handle-bar.
Great review 👍🏾
Do a review on BMW R1200GSA(2018)
Great video and overview. I was able to test ride both the R 18 B and K 1600 B on the same day. What a smooth engine that K 1600 has. I thoroughly enjoyed them both in different ways. @Texas2Tires
so when are you gonna review the xdiavel ;) ;) ?
Lemmy what kind of shoes are those?
You are good at what you do.
Nice job Lemmy...
Hi I'm BMW 1600b and today we're reviewing Lemmy.
Awesome video! Please review the Yamaha xsr700 now that we have it in the states!!
We already have the first ride written review up, and a video is coming soon! -DrewZilla
*www.revzilla.com/common-tread/2018-yamaha-xsr700-first-ride-review
I’m seriously thinking of buying one
This bike sort of reminds of Honda's 2014 CTX 1300. Honda tried to mix a sports touring bike with a bagger. This bike seems to be better refined. We will see.
i've really been enjoying mine
I saw one of the the Police divisions use this bike here in Indonesia to escort VIP I saw at least 8 bikes at one time. That is why I am looking for this, never ride a bike though just curious.
Thanx Lemmy!
What are your thoughts on purchasing a Victory bagger now that they are no longer being produced?
Mr MegaTruong It’s a good choice. Cheap right now but will be a good investment as they become rarer. they are also strong and cheap to maintain as not much goes wrong. Might have to buy 2nd hand now, but that only makes the deal better.
The more I look at the bike it really seems it falls more into the honda goldwing class then anything else. I say that cause of the styling of the machine and comforts that is given. However that is my thought from what it appears to me.
Just out of curiosity what are the maintainance cost on these bikes? I have a Suzuki GSX-S 1000F so mine are super low.
Well, it's a BMW with six cylinders, so if you have to ask...it might not be the bike for you. As I understand it, maintenance ain't cheap! -DrewZilla
with one you like most bagger or glowing 2018?
ZLA Lemmy will you do a head to head video on the wing DCT and 1600GA?
Best motorcycle reviews on CZcams, was waiting for his ph to fall out of his pocket.
I love this bike I was going to take it for a test ride. But the only thing I hate about it is the fact that it's face is so big it dwarfs the front wheel so much.
@Lem, are we gonna get a review on the Suzuki M109R. Seems like a cruiser you'd appreciate judging from your V-Rod review.
We tend to review bikes at press launches or when manufacturers loan us a new model for a long-term review. Unless Suzuki updates the bike, we probably won't be able to review it. -DrewZilla
A bagger that's not just about looks. I like.
When is the Scorpion EXO-R420 gonna be available and how soon should we expect a video review?
It's expected to start shipping early-January 2018, so expect a video review closer to that timeframe. -DrewZilla
great video Lenny to me BMW means Bring My Wallet
The beginning of this video reminded me of something funny I saw today...twice actually. It was a circa 2004 BMW K1200GT with the most enormous windshield I've ever seen. Looked like it came off a Winnebago. I think the owner did it to be amusing. The top of the screen was probably a foot above his head and then he clipped an air deflector to the top of that.
Made me laugh anyway.
For what this bike is designed for and capable of, not to mention price, a Harley won't touch it. All the standard options is something you'd expect on a 35k and above ride. I own it's smaller sibling, the K1300 and after 5 years and over 20,000 miles, no issues. All maintenance. Yes, a Harley will be much easier on maintenance costs than a BMW but by the time you want to add on your upgrades for power and whatnot, you just paid for maintenance over 4 years roughly for the BMW.
The smart move bmw does is give reviewer bikes loaded with all the accesories giving the buyers an impression that everything is standard. However when you are about to buy it, they will give u a huge list of add ons. So, pay a fortune on the motorcycle and then pay more for features.
Nice video
But how loud is it, and will people think I'm a bad ass when I ride it? These things are more important than how well the bike works, obviously...
Guessing its a 2018 model year....
Good looking bike
How would this compare to the FJR 1600? Love my HD, but thinking about going back to metric again....
You might mean the FJR1300, which is a ~1300cc inline-4, while the K1600B is a ~1600cc inline-6. So the BMW has more power and is also more premium. Of course, the FJR is tried and tested, so the reliability is quite high. -DrewZilla
@@RevZilla yes I was.. sorry.
No worries! Just hope I helped! -DrewZilla
Can it run Crysis tho?
HAHA no nothing will ever run Crysis at max settings.
Nice! Best comment on here!
Heavy??
Wait until it needs that valve adjustment. Bet it’s 2 grand
My brother owns owns one after labor and $1,110 great motorcycle all day comfort. A lot of the maintenance he does him self oil change air filter brakes.
But that valve adjustment is a butt kicker on price!
Very good
Do those handlebars come stock?
You have the option of those bars and more traditional BMW touring bars. -DrewZilla
I got to demo ride this bike and yes it is Awesome! But I don't believe I will give up my Harley Road Glide for it yet?
Bought this and I gave my Harley away.
should test it on highway...at max legal speed limit...
Maybe a bit too much worrying about what sector what bit comes from?
Pure functioning good times, HD is in trouble, all that and it's price is reasonable!
I was just going to post in it's base form it's actually cheaper than an HD. I own a HD but I'd trade it for that in a hot minute.
And it produces almost twice as much power for a similar displacement.
Harley... come on, Harley. You can do better.
I think most would be better served with the R1250 RT.JMO.Great review, thank you.
I bought a new R1250RT last May and love it, but now I'm thinking I might be interested in the GA - perhaps a new 2022 model. Nothing wrong with the RT, just love that Six banger.
@@4LowRocks
Quite a bit more weight, but if that's of no concern,go for it.
@@travelinben1966 Yeah came off of a Harley Road Glide at over 1,100lbs; don't want to get that heavy again!
@@4LowRocks
Me neither.No more than 650 lbs.tops.
cool bike
why does the bmw and the f6b have a wine to them while running
Probably a combination of sounds from the gearbox, shaft drive, and intake. -DrewZilla
Mainly rear box noise, straight cut gears.
I have a 2017 Road Glide Special and this sort of remind me of that, the looks are a big miss for me....I wanna like it, I love Harley’s but I would love to have a bike that came with all those options and power, but the styling is just terrible. The bars, the boards, the exhaust....it’s just wonky lookin to me.
Hey Revzilla can you help me finding the most expensive helmet!
Sure, if that's what you're looking for. Currently it's the AGV Pista GP R, but it's really intended for riding on the race track. -DrewZilla
*www.revzilla.com/agv-pista-gp-helmet
But it doesn't looks stylish, I want something in the off-road category with sophisticated, rough and aggressive looks!
Context helps. If it's an off-road helmet you want, consider helmets from 6D, Shoei, and Arai. -DrewZilla

We don't have the song title at hand, but we get all our music from premiumbeat.com. -DrewZilla
RevZilla Thnx man. Awsome review btw 🍻
it wins just because the air filter doesnt take 5 hours to change like the f6b
The styling and layout is shockingly close to the Honda DCT, but much much more displacement
DCT is a type of transmission, not a bike model. The DCT Goldwing tourer has over 1800 cc buy the Africa Twin DCT has 1000 cc.
Point taken, good catch. I was picturing the NC700JD. The Bat Bike
Would this make a good learner bike?
rockafella1690 if you're a rockfeller that breathe and exhales money , yes.
Nice one.
Sure, if you've got $30,000 to buy one. The valve adjustment that Lemmy talked about is only ONE of several expensive upkeep services you need. While I have no PERSONAL experience, a $300 oil change is pretty common for a Beemer. So, the first time you lay the bike down, expect the insurance company to take it away from you and give you a check, and watch your insurance rates go through the roof.
By the way, I'm a big guy. Not quite as big as Lemmy, but close. When I took my MSF course, and went looking for my first bike, three different people all gave me the same answer, a Yammie FJR1300, since I planned on using it for commuter duty and a bit of weekend touring. The FJR, the K1200 and K1300 GTs and the R1200RT are all comfortable bikes for me, but the K1600 is just TOO big.
Gary C that being said, I would begrudge someone for getting one. Seems like a sweet ride.
160 hp in a deceptively fast 1600cc six-cylinder bike is the very last thing any new motorcyclist should be learning on. Ride a used 500/600cc machine every week for a year. If you drop it or wreck it you'll be glad you didn't do it on a fast $25k motorcycle.
hummmm...used street glide for sale...styling alone is a 10 plus...would love to see this and a harley on the drag strip...
The GPS option for this bike looks like a Game boy from the 90's. That was the deal breaker for me.
I got the GPS with the bike but I just so use to Waze that I don't use it. However, I love the info page on the GPS giving me all paremeters as I ride. Do not shy away from this amazing beast !!! You will never want to ride anything else.
@@alp3781 is there a way to install a sissy bar? That's the deal breaker for me.
I still prefer the K1600 G.T. over this "bagger" effect...
sad short riders like me gonna have a harder time starting out
currently owns a mt07
but will it wheelie tho
Other K1600s will, I don't see why this one won't! LOL!
yes
it wont be very easy XD
Paan Farkhan My K1600 GT wheelies like a 400 lb sportbike.
SuPahToAster with 160 HP?, you clearly haven't ridden many bikes.
The bike is affordable and comparable with most baggers but maintenance is too expensive compared to its competition
Meh bike, but damn good reviews as always. Wish we would get more videos from Lemmy and spurg!
>not mentioning that it sounds like an M3 on 2 wheels.
It looks and sounds a bit like a jet ski doesn't it.
except there's no water spitting out
You can fix that pretty easily.
Black Dog
Exhaust system?
Remus
akrapovic sounds better ?!
So... K1600B or R1200RT?
How many valves do you want to check...or...how many valves do you want to pay to have checked. The six-cylinder 1600 makes tons of power, but it has 24 valves. The 1200 boxer motor only has two cylinders and 8 total valves. The boxer cylinder heads are also exposed. If none of that matters, I'd just go test ride both to see which you prefer. -DrewZilla
Thank you for your answer. Never looked at it this way. You gave me something to think about.
I have one of each.
I can only envy. I ended up with RT and I am happy. But I still have bagger in my head :-)
