In most incarnations of the story, Doctor Frankenstein was just an evil scientist. Here its nice to see him as a kind individual who actually cares for his creation.
You should read the novelization. The book opens with an entire prologue dedicated to the doctor, his life before he met dracula, and how he basically alienated everyone around him to create the monster, and the consequences of working for dracula, that leads right into the movie.
I feel so sad for him.
