I like how he's actually invisible instead of that weird silhouette that they use for the audience to see
Twenty years on and these effects are still impressive to me 😊
A lot of people just look at the evil Hyde scene and say the whole vfx department was terrible in this film, which isn't accurate at all. The invisibility quirks shown in the film are great. And the submarine stuff was really good. And Hyde was done with prosthetics so no cgi there. Definitely good effects in the movie.
Great and super underrated movie.
Special effects have gotten Worse, not better
@@Rensune no they haven't. You only notice the bad cgi not the countless shots of cgi so seemless you can't see it. don't be pretentious
@@erosion271 the thing is, before you couldn't rely on cgi so you had to think about how to implement it in a good way. these days, it's just used too much..like full on CGI in the whole frame and that's usually where people notice it. rightfully so. a fully CGI protagonist in a scene rarely looks good.
I hadn't noticed until just now that Nemo's first mate is actually Ishmael from Moby Dick, very cool.
Loved this movie as a kid. I remember people hating it but I still think it holds up.
Fine wine
This is a breath of fresh air in the current CGI wasteland that Is Hollywood these days. I think it's terribly underrated. It was ahead of its time. This is a movie that is right at home right along the grandiose superhero films they make today. This technically was the first attempt at making an extended universe. I still think it holds up.
I never understood the hate.
They overdid Hyde and the soldiers at the end, and also rushed certain aspects of the story (too many characters, too much reliance on audience familiarity with their backstories) but the casting and premise were sound.
Part of the people hating on it were the readers of the comics by Alan Moore, which is incredibly cool.
Steve Norrington was an underrated director. It's a damn shame this film was his undoing due to so many conflicts with the studio and Connery. This was the guy who pretty gave Marvel their first big hit.
he was the director of blade isn it?
@@rfij3268yes
What did Connery do??
@@brucekhamp6859 Some of the actors said Connery was really hard on Norrington. Always questioning his direction. He pretty much took the film out of Norrington's hands. Made plenty of changes with the studio in post film process. Norrington was treated so bad that he quit directing after this.
@@WarlordRising It seems to me that Sean Conery was a big asshole and a major douchebag. I'm sure he was a good actor, but an absolute asshole. I'm not convinced that he took his profession seriously. What I read about him indicates that golfing was more important to him than acting. And there are plenty of much better English/British/Scottish/Welsh actors than him.
While the movie massively diverted from the original material, you gotta admit the visuals with the invisible man are great, and still holdup well.
somehow if it came to his death i think the studio would receive some complaints...it was pretty graphic
@@vegvisir9276 Well...almost everything about him in the original material was pretty graphic.
This movie was being made at the same time as the books

“Call me Ishmael.” I shouldn’t have laughed as hard as I did.
I am big boss and so are you
Can you explain it to me please? I didn't get the joke :(
@@godz52Ishmael is the name of the main character of the story Moby Dick.
"Call me Ishmael" is a quote from the game Metal Gear Solid V (Phantom Pain).
@@keroro407 More famously, it's the first line of Moby Dick.
@@keroro407 So close, yet so far.
For most the movie Rodney was treated roughly because of his past as a thief. But even so. He still pulled through numerous times helping them. He even got lit on fire to save Tom sawyer from a flame thrower troop.
Hmm. Weird sentence to read. This movie sounds fuckin rad.
@@tonyc.4392 it is. very much a case of "watch it yourself and form your own opinions, rather than let the critics think for you"

One of the most impressive bits about this is they could have just done Skinner all up in make up in order to avoid having to digitally remove his neck and the back of his head after they went outside, but they chose to maintain continuity and edited out everything but his face. Love that attention to detail, a supremely underrated film
"Call me Ishmael" is such a random, but great cameo
Can we appreciate the fact the the invisible man was standing all this time naked?
There's a naked guy running around in the building!
They must have blown Skinner's wardrobe budget on this scene because the rest of the movie he is just a normal dude with paint on his face lol. The CGI looks so much better.
They still took the time to edit out his hands when appropriate, so I guess it was a reasonable compromise to save themselves some work
@@SignorAde And save some budget, don't forget the budget.
It's bitter-sweet to know that Sean Connery refused the role of Gandalf only to do this film after he saw what a success Lord of the Rings became.
Probably for the best.
Can't imagine Connery shouting "fool of a took!" in his accent 😂😂
@@weeeeehhhhh That's the power of hind sight, I think. We have a lovely Gandalf in Ian McKellen, so I can't imagine Connery do that either, but Peter Jackson and company could and did at one point. I wonder if we would think of Connery's performance the same way as most do of McKellen's.
@@khymaaren You're completely right. I can't imagine Connery giving the same performance as McKellen.
Connery would have made Gandalf something completely different and unique.
@@weeeeehhhhh he would of been fantastic and defined his late career, but he was too stupid to see the potential, and too much of a philistine not to know or even attempt to read a literary classic. to top it all off, he's dead.
“I keep telling you, he’s SEVENTY-THREE years old, AND he’s DEAD!”
"Call me Ishmael." The opening sentence of Moby Dick.
How I love the little touches. :)
Fury: "The Avenger Initiative was my idea"
M: "He he.... Noob".
😅
Love how they're walking with an Invisible man but are dumbfounded by a car🤣
The cast for this movie was amazing. They didn't go for huge stars except Connery, everyone else was moderately or not even famous at the time but they all nailed their performances.
I should point out Skinner is AN invisible man not THE Invisible Man. They had to change Griffin to Skinner because of copyright issues.
In the movie there's 3 invisible men; The original A.K.A. Griffin (who is said to have died due to his work), Skinner (who stole Griffin's work), and M's goon (who I'm pretty sure is the same person who recruited Quatermain)
I miss Sean Connery.
RIP to him
I wish he had realized how awesome this movie is.
Meh.
He was scum.
Captain Nemo's fit is sharp af .
This is just one of those like, you know the movies who are like, not bad enough, but not the best either, but you can still watch the movie many times over, cause it's just an.. easy to watch movie.
This is one of the few movies I can fit into that category
It's not a great movie, but it's a fun movie.
It's cool concept with a lot of things done really well( the effects for one, the performances here and there) and is really ahead of its time.
If you think about it, this is the Avengers, before the Avengers.
It has all the same beats, just without the buildup from knowing these characters beforehand( at least these incarnations).
Did you know: in the French version of the movie, Mina Harker is introduced as "Harker, Chemistry specialist", not just "chemist".
This is a fun movie and the hate for it is dumb. This is EXACTLY the kind of popcorn entertainment we're missing.
It's the perfect amount of dumb fun without being dumb.
I loved watching this movie as a child. Superhero/victorian era is always great
it was the avengers long before the avengers were even a thing
Fun fact: this thief is in fact the better person than the original character in the comics, by far.
I will never understand the hate this movie gets. It may not have been a masterwork, but it wasn't trying to be. It was trying to be a fun adventure romp. At that, it succeeded and then some.
I feel like I'm being gaslighted by the world because I LOVED this movie.
It’s a fun popcorn movie but the execution doesn’t quite live up to the wonderful premise of teaming up 19th century literary figures into an Avengers style team. I would actually have no problem with a remake more in the spirit of the original graphic novel.
I can’t believe this movie’s becoming a classic.
rofl. no its not. I just got prescribed by youtube a wes anderson film before this lol. youtube thinks im dumb af even as like a 10 year old I thought this movie was trash. I mainly rewatched die hard 3 over and over
The beauty of practical effects and excellent greenscreen is why this movie holds up so well 20 years on.
Twenty years ago this was done, TWENTY YEARS, and it actually looks quite impressive, I never understood the hatred towards this movie, but I def saw it when I was a kid, but still, technically impressive work here!!!..
This is one property I wouldn't mind a full on reboot
nah. they would fuck up the effects, Make Harker the lead role. And then make the rest of the cast besides maybe nemo bumbling bafoons
@@claytonmachine12 stop it
@@claytonmachine12 Generally, I would agree. But if someone like Guillermo Del Toro was to take on a project like this...
Oh my.
i'd hope they'd make it more like the original than whatever this movie tried to do
The fact they are rebooting Hellboy again and not this is kinda sad
Hard to believe that Rodney Skinner's actor later went on to play Vincent Van Gough in "Doctor Who". Incredible range of characters.
He was also Baseplate/MacMillan and Yuri from the Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 (2011) game and Despero from The Flash (series) and even the conductor from Midnight Meat Train
The finest stand-alone hero movie to be made in some time, an excellent production!
20 years ago and has better CGI than The Flash
What a trippy scene. The effects held up pretty well.
the funny thing is: in the original, you actually GOT the original Invisible Man. and he filled the role of both SKinner AND Dorian Grey(who was NOT in the original) in this movie....ie a useful ally that is u,timately not only unreliable, but downright villainous. but having Hyde rape the Invisible man to death wasn't QUITE the tone they were going for in this movie. Can't say i blame them.
Bro, WHAT
@@jacobalred4094 yeah. that's what happened in the comic. Invisible man played ball in the first volume, but was a naracisstic sociopath who would change sides to whoever he THOUGHT was going to win. So in volume 2 when the martians invaded ala War of the Worlds, the Invisible man switched sides..and nearly killed Mina harker in doing so. Mina being the ONE being in all of creation that Edward Hyde actually cared for. and the invisible man didn't know that Hyde can see in infravison(heat) and thus..wasn't invisible to him at ALL. the scene of Hyde explaining himself as the invisible man slowly dies upstairs..which cuases him..and all the BLOOD hyde and the room he was in is covered in to become visible agian, just like in the book...is rather epic.
@@jacobalred4094Personally, the moment that shocked me was when Quatermain died from a lightning bolt that came out of Harry Potter's dick. I think it was at the end of volume III.
@@alexsolomon8127Calling rape epic feels all kinds of wrong.
@@trueblue6201 My friend, this is Alan Moore writing. It's... hard to understate how extreme his writing and opinions can be.
People sooo dissed this movie when it came out, but holy duck it's good
Having Skinner replace Griffin was a good idea, considering the original Invisible Man is one of the most vile characters in comic books
The digital effects of the Invisible Man are impressive.
Sean connerly's voice is always a good giggy
It's kind of crazy that modern film got so bad, that this movie actually has been upgraded to a rough gem of a sort.
OMG!! visual effects magic here!!
I always loved this movie, never got why people hated it.
Well, can't say this one aged well but it certainly ain't forgotten, judging by the fact am here. Plus, Connery's performance sure saves it a lot.
This movie had a lot of potential. It’s a shame it didn’t live up to it.
The book's author Alan Moore made a collection of decent follow ups .

Insanely amazing effect.
Underrated movie. Kinda want to watch it again now.
Could've used a few alternative writing choices, but this movie is criminally underrated, especially when compared to its comic counterpart.
Most notably, if it wasn't for this movie having Moriarty trying to steal the Leagues' powers to start WWI, we'd never have gotten the same kinda plot in Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.

This was such an amazing premise and setup. I've heard a lot of negativity around this movie, and I get that it has some shortcomings but WHAT A PREMISE! Tom Sawyer? Dracula's wife?! Dr Jekyll?!! The invisible man!!!!
Her name is Wilehmina Harker, wife of Jonathon Harker from the Bram Stoker Dracula series/movie. The man who was held captive in Draculas castle and eventually turned.. So no, she's not Draculas wife.

I still cannot fathom my eyes that this is the same actor who played Vincent Van Gough in Doctor Who, the train conductor from the Midnight Meat Train, Baseplate/MacMillan and Yuri from Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 (2011) and Despero from The Flash. Tony Curran is such an incredible actor right there!
This film was honestly way ahead of its time. If this released nowadays, it would get a whole cinematic universe
I loved this movie so much. I wish there was more but having only one was perfect.
I enjoyed this film back in the day
And still enjoy it very much
Always hoped they did a sequel
Considering what Hyde did to the Invisible Man in the comic sequel, it would have gotten a hard R rating.
sean connery, still the only one, who can play bond and this character, such a talented man. i have seen this movie a couple of times,
Loved this movie 😊
Kinda get why this movie didn't do well
It just has so much build up and build up without much happening but its third act really makes the whole movie worth it.
JESUS thats is the baroque library of Strachow Monastery at the Hradschin in Prague! I was there just four days ago, and it took a special permit and one of the nuns as guardian to do so. And they MADE A MOVIE there :-D speaking of conservation issues!
Skinner in the movie: kinda chill guy that ends up being good despite the appearances
Skinner in the comics: A fucking sex predator
I’m watching this is 2023 and that is fucking COOL. The effects even mostly hold up.

Such a good job for John Cena to play this character.
That's Tony Curran invisible just brilliant Skinner
This was my introduction to Peta Wilson. I was only 10 years old when I watched this movie.
That when Nemo's car looks what them have in Cyberpunk 2077
I'm sure him and Mr Hyde will get along great :)
HE SAID THE THING
You just know working conditions for CG artists have gotten pretty shit when The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen has better special effects than modern marvel and dc movies, this is the kinda results hollywood could get if they let them unionize, paid them fairly, let them work healthy hours, etc.
In itching to see this movie since childhood. Never knew the title bc i fell asleep while it plays in tv. I guess its now or never
I enjoyed this movie. I think it was ahead of its time, and was a couple of elements off from being one of the all time great movies. For people who are fans of older movies and legends this is like the Avengers of those characters.
Sucks they couldn't get the rights to the original Invisible Man, cause I buy him being a chemist more than Mina, who in the Bram Stoker novel was a school teacher or mistress (I think that's the same thing back then?). Also, making her instead the team lead like in the comics would make sense since she was a major part in taking down Dracula.
Maybe it's because I was a little boy and anything in cinema impressed me, but back then I really liked this movie.
