How To Design a Steam Shower

  • One of the most luxurious bathroom features is a steam shower. However, there are a series of particular construction details that must be executed properly in order to have a functional and long lasting installation. The steam unit generator is a piece of mechanical equipment that is installed by the plumber. It needs to be located within close proximity to the shower itself and must have easy access for cleaning and maintenance. It generates heat, so it needs to be placed in a vented space and also requires a hardwired electrical connection. The shower enclosure itself needs to be finished with a special water proof membrane on all surfaces that is specifically designed to handle the extreme temperature and humidity conditions. Regular shower drywall is not sufficient. A high performance epoxy tile grout is also recommended instead of a standard sand and cement grout. Other important details include ensuring the ceiling of the steam shower is tiled with a slight slope to prevent excessive condensation from building up. Also, the shower glass needs to be installed tight on all sides and sealed with a gasket to prevent the steam from escaping. And finally, any bench or ledge structures must be built out of non-wooden material such as concrete block or styro-foam.

      @@MalibuGlassMI - seems like due to slope and needing a lower ceiling… might be a good location for under the higher part of a stairway that goes above

    The shower controls should also be boxed in and sealed at the seams including the hot and cold water lines to prevent steam from migrating into the wall cavity. This is often overlooked and you will get mold growth on the back of adjoining room sheetrock over time. It would be a good idea to insulate the interior walls too because you could have a 30 or 35 degree temperature differential.

    Any suggestions on lights for the steam shower? i assume those will need to be siliconed to prevent steam from going into the trust space above the shower?

    my contractor just finished our home and my steam shower did not get any tile on the ceiling, I asked why they didn't tile it he said it didn't need it and its too expensive that they used some type of product that won't cause any bubbles. two week after i moved in keep in mind i still haven't used the steam part as it's not connected for some reason, but hot showers alone cause a few bubbles to come out and I pushed on them and they are soft and mushy. Does my steam shower ceiling have to be tiled? or can they use other material and paints to prevent this from happening? thank you

    Great video guys! I just want to ask regarding the steam shower ceiling. This project was most likely tiled to an existing slab. What if the steam shower needed a dropped ceiling? you guys mentioned that Regular shower drywall is not sufficient. What material do you recommend for the dropped ceiling before adding tiles? any answer is greatly appreciated.

    Not sure why you can’t use pressure treated wood for your bench if it’s getting waterproofing and tile.

    How does steam differ from mist? And do steam showers actually fill a shower with steam or is it steam *and* flowing water? Where can I find videos of an SS with the steam function going? All the steam showers seem to show a regular flow.

    • @lciummo1
      @lciummo1 Před 5 lety +1

      Technically, it is not steam but hot water vapor - steam is 212F (or higher) and would kill quickly. The generator evaporates the water producing a hot vapor that fills the enclosure - czcams.com/video/-tYvA7XHcrg/video.html

    If you've got gaskets even at the bottom of the door, where does the fresh air come in? Are you stuck breathing CO2 in there?
