  • In this episode I have added a cheap-and-cheerful shop front to the elegant and beautiful Arts-and-Crafts style Wesleyan Assembly Hall that I am making for Chandwell's High Street from card and paper.

    What a beautiful travesty of commercial decoration. The milky glass fits in this case, as I'm sure Rev's lets the window get choked with dust before they pay a window cleaner. And the plywood

    Hi Michael. Superb modelling, as usual. The milkiness of the glazing reflects the years of dust that has accumulated on the inside. Totally appropriate. Best wishes.

    So many great and beautiful building have been destroyed over the decades and those few that remain often have their frontages ravaged by modern businesses with no taste or respect for the beauty if the building they are renting.
    You have managed to show this WITHOUT destroying the magic of the older building while still having the uglier (apologies to your brother in law) modern industrial commercial and retail shop with no class.
    Realism levels within your work endlessly impresses and amazes me.
    I still hope to begin work on my urban/industrial based layout at some time this year but, in the mean time - thank you SO MUCH for continuing to inspire, educate and entertain with your wonderfully creative REALISTC and ever more immersive work on what is still the very best, living N scale town in all of modeldom.

    I said something similar a while ago, what I love about your layout is that to me it just feels like a real place. Over the months you’ve introduced local characters and again today. I’m starting to think these people are real. Chandwell has history and purpose. It exists for a reason. Many layouts are just that, layouts. I’m trying to build a grimy East London suburb layout and you’ve inspired me to give it a purpose to be there. As for the milky window, from a distance no windows look pristine. Absolutely breathtaking.

    • @Chandwell
      @Chandwell  Před rokem +1

      I find that the story, daft as it is, helps me make the buildings seem more real as I always try to work out how they fit together at a fiction level as well as a physical. Go for it with your layout - it’s lots of fun!

    Michael,
    On the contrary, don't rethink the stained glass glazing. But try considering interior low level lighting in what may have been the original choir loft (now car part storage). You would need to add a black box floor and walls to reduce light bleed. But with to lights dimmed and facing outwardly you should have no problems.
    Even with your taking the time to cutout a template I am amazed the church fit so well in that spot. Length. Width. And Height. Exceptional.

    • @Chandwell
      @Chandwell  Před rokem +1

      Thank you Jim. We are thinking along the same lines. I have a very particular prototype in mind for when it comes to the interior. I really dislike messing around with lights though, so I’ll not be adding lighting. I have a few ideas which should hopefully work, and they are not far off what you’re suggesting, which is a bonus.

    Love the stained glass windows and in the 90's (which is your layout years IIRC) then they would not have been clean. After 90 years of really bad air pollution in a northern town, there is no way that you could even see through them!
    As a 60's kid from a northern industrial town, the Edwardian/Victorian buildings were extremely run down and grimy. There has been massive steps taken in the last 30 years to clean up the air and then to clean up the buildings so today they look better than when they were built. So a bit of cloudy glass isn't an issue to me.

    For others who don't have access to printable overhead film for doing their stained glass, most colour copier / printing places will print you a colour image on clear (not milky) overhead transparency at a very reasonable price, ideal for stained glass, lattice panes, TV displays or any other illuminated display, just remember that for displays white ends up clear so add a white diffuser behind the clear film to show as white in all conditions. Also for better effects, mirror the image first, then the print can be on the back face and the shiny surface on the outside.

      Yes I agree 100% but it’s starting to get difficult to get my phone into the street. The street is too narrow to keep Revs in focus and the buildings get in the way of any sweeping shots unfortunately. That’s why there are now almost always from above. I’ll keep trying though.

    Michael Guessing Revs made some Un Pheasant alteration to that beautiful building, but in keeping with those on the Old Town Hall by Ben’s Beds & Club Passion. Like others have commented I think the stained glass is just showing a bit of age and grime after all it likely to be a unloved underused part of the building, guessing storage at the most. I do like the light shining through from the back window. I’m really looking forward to seeing the area around the beck and viaduct arches coming together. You see so many smaller older industrial buildings when looking down from viaducts in urban area bet there are many different styles to choose from in West Yorkshire. The tale of Johnny McShae is so Chandwell. Ian

Already I'm transported to 'Steve's Super Spares' in about 1990 and unbranded 20W50 for £3 a gallon...which used to last me about 500 miles. No-one who owned a Leyland car can forget the smell of burning oil :-) Talking of oil, I wonder if you have a plan for the look of 'oil on water' for the creek at the back!
