Just flicking through CZcams for research after becoming a grandfather for the 1st time in my 50’s.I have a workshop and like working with wood and stumbled upon your video but this is way beyond my skill level. Fantastic job mate. It would take me countless attempts to get the head anything like.
That is stunningly beautiful Trevor. It's a work of art to be passed down through the generations. You are a very talented man
chris hills Thank you.
One of the best looking wooden 🐎. Nice job! Thanks for sharing 👍

I just finished watching your video! This is absolutely stunning! I loved watching the process, and listening to your explanations.
Many thanks Rachel , much appreciated. Trevor.
That is a very well shaped horse for a ''First Timer'' ..So often they end up looking too clumpy , but this one looks very elegant. 👍
Many thanks, much appreciated. Regards Trevor.
@@trevorfackrell5517 You definitely have a skill there.
Brilliant work
Beautiful job Trevor. I and my friend want to build a couple of horses from The Rocking Horse Shop plans, a small and medium size. Thanks for sharing your gift with us.
Thanks for the comment Timothy , enjoy the journey, Trevor.
what a stunning piece of work
Absolutely gorgeous, incredibly well done 👍
Many thanks Mario, much appreciated. Trevor.
You did an expert job of the rocking horse Trevor. Enjoyed very much watching the horse all come together looks brilliant.
Many thanks Paul. Trevor.
Absolutely Beautiful
Thanks Paul.
This is hands down one of the finest pieces I’ve ever seen constructed. Is it me or does the horse have its head turned slightly? I have never seen a rocking horse with that head turn, what a absolutely beautiful feature. You sir are certainly a craftsman.
what an amazing piece of work, you are a very clever man. You never cease to amaze me in your creations xx
Sandra Fackrell thank you Sandra.
@@trevorfackrell5517 you are welcome
Wonderful! I Love it! Such lovely work.
Beautiful work Trevor. Lovey to see such a fine piece crafted with love. It's fascinating to imagine when, why and by whom the treasure in the tummy will be discovered.
twomillionflowers thank you, much appreciated.
It's astonishing what one can find inside old horses...A gun silencer is the oddest..I assume that's what it is.. {From an Aristocratic family }.Usually it's just marbles and pencils, and bits of Meccano, lengths of gasolier chains. Kids {Or adults} post things down the pommel holes 🙂
You have made such a gorgeous horse here. I'm 22 and would really like to get into woodworking and carpentry and maybe specifically rocking horses. I have no idea where to start as I have no experience but this was so enjoyable to watch, especially since there isn't that much extensive content on crafting rocking horses!
Thanks for your comments Grace , The Rocking Horse shop ran courses on carving a horses head, but that was before COVID. Depending where you live, it might be worth a go once we get over this so called pandemic. I’m sure there must be college’s that do evening classes in carpentry. Well good luck Grace. Trevor.
@@trevorfackrell5517 thank you for your comment. We do offer carving courses and would love to welcome you. www.rockinghorse.co.uk/shop/categories/Rocking-Horse-Carving-Plans/

Hi Tracy, thanks for the nice comments . Yes go for it, Don’t leave it until you get to 80 like I did. You’ll find it so rewarding. Trevor.

This is amazing. Thanks very much for sharing it.
Thanks Orla , your very welcome. Trevor.
Fantastic job Trevor. Love the solid Walnut. I thoroughly enjoyed this project too but built mine using the Birch Plywood plans. You're a lot braver than me.
Thanks Russell .
Fair play Trevor. Can't believe you made it in Walnut first time around, you must have been terrified of damaging it during the final stages! I am in the middle of making a smaller version, although giving myself more room for error by making it in popular and painting. Just got the kids to write letters to future selves to put in the center chamber and plan to attach the top part today. Many thanks for putting video together and best of luck in the future. Damon, Ireland
Thanks for your comments, and good luck with your project. I hope you are getting as much pleasure as I did in making it. Your children are going to love it. Trevor.

Brilliant

Thanks for sharing. This is amazing! I want to make one for my great niece and nephew (I'm only 29 and have a great niece and nephew, how crazy is that??😄). I may well have some questions for you in the future! I love that you carved the features of the horse like you'd see in the antique rocking horses, I think I'll attempt to do the same.
Thanks Steph, don’t hesitate to ask, if I can help in any way. Trevor.
Very nice, wish I could have seen the details on how you installed the mane. The tail was interesting but I’m trying to research how to install the mane properly
Hi Jon thanks for the comment, yes I must admit I did struggle with fitting the mane. The channel needed to be a little wider than stated. I did eventually fit it by crudely nailing it in the channel, and laying the hair over to one side, it looked a mess, but what I did was filled the channel with black milliput which is a two part epoxy putty. It did a great job of hiding the mess filling the channel and securing the mane permanently. Hope this helps regards Trevor.
Hi Trevor Thanks for the video, great work.you haveinspired me to give it a go, as I previously thought maybe it was beyond my skill set. I have the chance of using some beech, but i think it maybe a little plain now, after seeing the walnut.
What’s the horse called? Cheers John Morley
Hi John, thanks for your comments . I would say go for the beech if you have a good supply. As you know you can get a really good finish on Beech. I still have not found a name for her yet but I’m working on it.. You can do it John, just take your time. All the best Trevor.
Thank you for sharing this wonderful video. The wood is beautiful. Your head is delicate and kind. May I ask where you got the pattern and instructions for the rocking horse? Thank you again
Hi Jane , glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for the lovely comments. You can get the plans from www rockinghorse.co.uk . They do several sizes, mine was the large size. Hope this helps. Best regards Trevor.
Very good Trevor. I have made about 20 or so of these now and for your first one in walnut I can honestly say it is class. Obviously I can see from your workshop you know one end of a chisel from the other. BTW the pieces attached to the head are neck overlays and not the shoulder (withers). Two basic mistakes with wood carving, taking too much off, and not taking enough off. You have done neither. I can understand not covering up too much of that walnut but a clip on rosette would not go amiss.
Thanks Allan, coming from someone that’s made over 20 Rocking Horses is praise indeed. I take your point about the rosette, I will have to get one..thanks again. Trevor.
This is amazing Trevor! I would absolutely love a horse like this. It is beautiful, if you are in the UK, and would be interested in making one for me. Please let me know!
Hi Lizzi , thank you for your lovely comments. I am humbled by you wanting me to make you a rocking horse, but sadly I don’t do commissions. Best wishes Trevor.
Fantastic work Trevor. Do you have previous wood carving experience or did you go on a carving course at Rocking Horse shop? - this is way I am thinking of proceeding
Hi Tim, thanks for the comment. I’m self taught, but I studied lots of photos of horses from different angles, especially their head. You just have to take your time. Obviously if you’re planning on finishing it with paint, then that would hide a lot of mistakes. Evidently one of the mistakes people make is failing to remove enough timber, so don’t worry about removing a bit more. Good luck Tim . Trevor
@@trevorfackrell5517 Well done for doing your Own research... Your horse looks nothing like anything ''Off Plan'' , and this much to his advantage.
I haven't ever made a horse, but have collected Antique ones for a long time.
What I find fascinating is that the 'Big three'' Makers, {Ayres, G&J Lines and Leach} clearly had lots of men working for them, and the horses vary considerably. Some are so 'similar' {Especially 1890's Ayres/Leach horses} that one wonders if men left and went to work at a rival factory.
There are 'Exceptional' horses made by all these factories {and many humdrum ones}
The good ones shine out beneath many layers of overpainting.
Many of the later horses became much plainer and stockier ..Perhaps as fashions changed, or the original men working in the last Quarter of the 19th Century went to the Workshop in the Sky. 🙏
I wonder if they thought that 140 years on that their horses would endure the passing of time? Testament to the skills!
{Bow horses survive much less frequently, due to the physics of them} .
Enjoyable presentation. Superbly done project with a very personal touch added to help amatuers along an amazing journey of creation. Your steed has an impressive, proud look of distinctive quality. I can imagine lasting for future generations of family fun for children. Very generously appreciated the time to display talents and might I enquire the coatings name for the stand?, such a fine, lustrous polish and child safe a bonus. The two contrast colors very nice touch of granduer. Professional job & Best Wishes. 👏🖒👍👌
Hi, thanks for your most eloquent comments, much appreciated. The finish on the base is the same as used for the horse, Osmo oil and wax numbers 3032 clear satin , put on with a cloth and wiped off straight away, building up several coats over several days, hope this helps. Regards Trevor.
@@trevorfackrell5517 👏👌👍🖒
Totally beatiful, congratulation. I am from Peruvian and where can I find special accesorios like a metal a other ?
Thanks Eduardo, if you go on their website at The Rocking Horse Shop, they are based in Fangfoss York England. They will supply all the bits and pieces you will need, good luck. Trevor.
A beautiful job Trevor. I and my son started to build a couple of horses from The Rocking Horse Shop plans, a small and medium size. We actually started these in 2002 and have only just started to pick up where we left off....I know! Ours are made of Sapele so a mahogany flavoured wood. I am unsure as to how to finish the wood as we dont want to paint them but like you would like to see the beauty of the wood through a varnish like finish but not too glossy. The finish on your horse is superb from the video. You mention Osmo oil and wax as your finish. Was this clear or coloured? if so what colour did you use? You have inspired us sir!
Hi Richard, thanks for the kind words. The Osmo Oil is 3032 clear satin. This will give you time to put the oil and wax on a large section thinly before wiping it of off completely straight away. Do this with several coats until you are happy with the results. It may seem a bit drawn out, but stick with it. The advantage of using the oil and wax is when the horse is moved into the house with central heating, you will find the joints move slightly , just rub them down with 600 grit and wipe some more oil on them. Hope this helps . Good luck don’t give up. All the best Trevor.
@@trevorfackrell5517 Many thanks for your prompt reply. I will be seeking out the 3032 for our finish. Best regards Richard.
Hi Trevor, please could you confirm which brand of Crystaline wax you used to finish off?
@@richardhill1194 Hi Richard, the wax polish is made by chestnut. Regards Trevor.
Hi Trevor, Many thanks. Did you wipe the horse down with white spirit or something similar before applying the OSMO?
The horse is amazing. I'm doing up an old horse at the moment but wondered how you decided where to put the swing irons and brackets? I've noticed that the rock or glide of the horse changes depending on where you put them
Hi longridge Olives, thanks for the comment. I just followed the plans, but I measured it to be 2 inches from the base of the neck and 3 inches down either side from the the centre line of the back to fix the staples. Hope this makes sense and helps. Regards Trevor.
@@trevorfackrell5517 Hi Trevor, I might not have asked the right question. How far from the hoof of the horse do you drill the hole for the bottom part of the angle iron, and how far from the end of the long bit of wood do you place the brackets that hold the angle iron. The horse I have had the angle irons sitting vertically (rather than on an angle). This meant the horse had a weird jerking/rocking motion. I moved the brackets and now the horse has a good rock, but is there a specific place to fix the brackets and angle irons to ensure the right glide and rock? Also, did you use Gesso?
Hi, sorry about that. I measured 3 inches from the front hoof bolt and 4 inches from the back hoof bolt , then 3 inches from either end of the top rail to the centre of the brackets. The other measurements I can give you is the distance between bracket centres is 46 inches, and the distance between the bottom of the swing irons is 38 inches . As your horse is probably not the same size as mine, if you fix the brackets 8 inches wider than the bottom of the swing irons, hopefully that should give you the right position. I hope I’ve got it right this time, please let me know how you get on. Best regards Trevor.
Ps I used Osmo oil and wax on the bare walnut to bring out the natural grain of the wood.
@@trevorfackrell5517 that's very helpful. Thank you for taking the time to reply :)
Show 👍🏻👍🏻👏🏻😃👏🏻
Hi Trevor, great video, not to mention the horse!. Can you tell me what size your horse is? The rocking horse shop do different sizes and styles and after seeing yours I feel that is the size to go for. Thanks and stay safe. Alan
Hi Alan , thank you, the size of the horse is the large, plan 110 . Hope this helps. Trevor.
@@trevorfackrell5517 Perfect, Thanks. Alan
Beautiful piece of work. You did not say but I expect you nailed the saddle and tack. I hope if you make another that you will consider not nailing things on as it is a shame to mark such a fine piece. I have 4 horses I have made and all have removable tack. Wife will not part with them.
Hi Ronald I appreciate the comment. You were right about nailing the saddle and tack, I was thinking about safety, but I’ve just started making another one in mahogany so I’ll look at having a removable tack. Like you I wasn’t happy about sticking nails into the beautiful walnut. Trevor.
@@trevorfackrell5517 Hi Trevor, I made the saddle tree myself from fiberglass and resin. In order to prevent the saddle from slipping I connected two 1/2" x 1" stainless steel dowels into the base of the saddle tree that fitted into two holes in the horses back. The girth strap then held it in place
@@ronaldcumpsty5605 Hi Ronald, sounds like a good idea, I presume you used fibre glass to form the shape underneath the saddle. Ronald , if you could send me a photo of that, it would be much appreciated. Trevor
@@trevorfackrell5517 hi Trevor, yes I will dig out a photo of the saddle tree. In order to get the shape of the horses back I masking taped two layers of aluminum foil over the area and then drew my basic shape with a black marker. Then I lay the first piece of matting over this a little larger than the outline. Let it set and then repeated it two more times. Once set I removed the piece and ground it to the marker lines.
Hi Trevor, do you have an email for me to send saddle photo
