  • Rocky (1976)
    Rocky II (1979)
    Rocky III (1982)
    Rocky IV (1985)
Rocky is an American sports drama multimedia franchise created by Sylvester Stallone, based on the life of Chuck Wepner, which began with the eponymous 1976 film and has since become a cultural phenomenon, centered on the boxing careers of Rocky Balboa and his protégé Adonis Creed.
The original film (Rocky) was written by Stallone and directed by John G. Avildsen, and was followed by the sequels Rocky II (1979), Rocky III (1982), Rocky IV (1985), Rocky V (1990), and Rocky Balboa (2006). Stallone wrote and directed four of the five sequels, with Avildsen returning to direct Rocky V. All six films were distributed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.[1] A spin-off film series followed, with Creed (2015), Creed II (2018), and Creed III (2023). The series stars Michael B. Jordan as boxer Adonis Creed, with Stallone as his trainer in the first two films. The Creed films were directed by Ryan Coogler, Steven Caple Jr., and Jordan respectively.

I look at Rocky as a physical representative of someone overcoming adversity that we deal with at one time or another. When Rocky takes those punches and goes down...that's us going through unemployment, divorce, physical, mental, emotional or financial hardships....it's all about taking the hits and kèep moving forward which is why Rocky more times than not comes out on top.

It's actually a story that's a parallel to his life trying to get this movie made. I believe that the $150,000 he's getting for the fight in Rocky is what he was originally offered for the script that he turned down. This movie was so inspirational to my generation.

Burgess Meredith was a very accomplished actor. He started out as a classical juvenile lead on Broadway then appeared in the classic movie OF MICE AND MEN and a classic Twilight Zone episode and is most remembered for playing the Penguin in the 1960s TV series BATMAN ("Fifty years as an actor and I'm remembered for playing a damn duck!").

1:41:30 That is where Survivor got the idea for the song. They were tasked with coming up for a song for the movie but were having trouble with concepts that would work for this movie. So Stallone agreed to let them watch a rough cut of the movie. When they heard Creed say "You had the eye of the tiger" that is when they knew what they were about to do.

I was born and raised in Philly, in the (early) 70s, and i grew up with this film (the first Rocky). Sylvester Stallone *was* Rocky for me. Like, even though I loved the movie, I thought he wasnt really acting. Evem when he starred in First Blood, I thought that they were fairly similar characters (in terms of emoting). When I turned 18 or 19, it had been some years since I watched the Rocky or Rambo films, so I revisted them and was blown away at how truly deep the films were, and just how excellent Stallone was in his performances. I wish I had realized it when I was younger, but am glad I've had decades now to really enjoy his performances and films.

It's always frustrating when people don't understand why Clubber Lang is upset. Is he over the top and doing too much? Yes. But does he have every right to be angry? Absolutely. I guess this is where you need to know about heavyweight boxing during that time period and what Stallone is paying homage to. (He loved Mohammad Ali and the heavyweights of that era who Ali fought). There was an order to how a boxer got to be champ. You start in amateur. Then you fight for the Olympic team. Then you start as a pro unranked and you have to fight a number of years fighting higher ranking fighters until you are ranked high enough to be a contender. The champ was somewhat obligated to fight contenders ESPECIALLY the top ranked one. This is how the system worked and fighters only had a very short window in their primes and/or ranked as the number one contender. Clubber Lang did all the steps. He was the number one contender and had every right to expect to fight for the championship. But who is champ? Rocky, who didn't do ANY of the steps that the system setup for fighters to contend for the championship. This is also why he has animosity towards Apollo who orchestrated it all because he needed a quick replacement for a title defense match by the previous number one contender. Rocky was just supposed to be a fill in so that heavyweight fighting commission would be satisfied. Heavyweight champs were obligated to fight every few months in order to keep the belt. So here is Clubber sitting waiting after doing all the right things to have his shot and Rocky is sitting up there as the champ who should've never gotten a shot at the title in the first place and is NOT fulfilling his obligation to fight top contenders. Rocky doesn't know of course that his title defenses are hand-picked and NOT contenders of course but Clubber doesn't know that and that doesn't change anything if he did.
THAT is why Clubber is mad.
I made this analogy before that puts it in context. Imagine if you went to college for say marketing. You graduated and after years of working for different companies you worked your way up in the most popular marketing firm at the time. You are one of the most qualified on the top executive's team. You are the star and next in line to move into the Exec position when the spot opens. You hear that the Exec is retiring but the position is given to the temp that filled in to answer calls and take notes one day the Exec was not in the office. This temp takes over as Exec and ignores you and starts giving out projects and recognition to people under you. Wouldn't YOU be pissed off?

at 1:28:31 When people say that " Wrestling is fake " what they mean is that the winner and loser are already decided and some of the spectacular jumps and throws are planned, both fighters work together to make the throw or slam down seem more spectacular.
But other than that the fallings are real, many of the hits connect , are real ... they do take damage... it's simply not a fight like an MMA or boxing where people really go after one another.
But there can be bad blood between some fighters so they will be more agressive with one another.
Fact is wrestlers are strong guys and they know how to fight ...its simply more of a show that a tactical real fight.

What is sad for people who lived thru that time is that we are seeing the undoing of that progress today. Loved that you enjoyed these movies. The emotional hook is the father/son dynamic between Rocky and Mick. At a glance, you think Mick takes away Rocky’s locker because he’s just a mean old bastard, but the crux is because he had to watch a once promising fighter cave in and settle into life as a goon for a mobster, the same people that chewed him up and threw him away 30 years earlier (boxing always had a dubious connection to organized crime). That’s what made the apartment scene where Rocky yelled “At least you had a prime!” more powerful. Yes, Mick did, and look where it got him. At that moment, after getting his frustration out, he realized Mick cared about him all along and getting kicked out of his locker was tough love.

He did buy that dog back and he also put him in the movie. That's a really cool real life story too. Outside of being a fight fan, Rocky is far from who Sly really is. He is super smart and a VERY underrated actor/writer/director. He's an artist who's body of work has given so much to film history. He is a living legend. Rocky is both a love story and a story about life itself. It's about taking hard hits in life, but getting your ass back up, giving it EVERYTHING you got and not giving up. That's the victory. You never give up. Great reaction kiddo! 👍🏿

Two turtles. No kid. Beverly Hills Cop was intended for Stallone. Murphy was a last minute choice after it just wasn't working out with Sly. Burt Young was 16-0 as a professional boxer. He was in Mickey Blue Eyes. Rocky had been seeing Adrian every day, it wasn't just a 10 minute date. Yes, Butkus was THE dog. No, it wasn't three rounds. Creed had said he'd drop Rocky in the 3rd round. The commentators were doubting Rocky was even going to last til then. Back then it was 15 rounds. You can be in a coma without being on life support. The crowd was so into the second fight someone yells out, " We love ya Rock." Sly replies that he loves "yous too." That exchange was not scripted. It just fit and they kept it in. Nice leopard print. Very Shania Twain-ish. He would have no problem fighting Ice T. 😅 Mr T's "pity the fool" is his trademark like Arnold's "I'll be back." How many times can we watch a similar story? Well, Deadliest Catch is on season 20. Ever seen Swamp People? Same thing every week. Nielsen met Stallone by sending him bikini pics....before she ever had a movie role. She's quick to talk about how bad it was being married to him, but she got her fame while she was with him. Dolph got started as a bodyguard for Grace Jones. He got started in Rocky and has been in some other movies, including The Expendables and Universal Soldier. Lundgren is also a chemical engineer and was studying at MIT when he decided to pursue acting. The Apollo fight was supposed to be an exhibition fight, not full bore (like a sparring match). James Brown got a top 40 hit out of Rocky IV. Its especially hard watching these films right now seeing Carl scream, "There is no tomorrow!" And then Creed dying. R.I.P. Carl Weathers. The Creed movies are Apollo's son. Stallone told Lundgren to hit him as hard as he could. Stallone spent a few days in ICU as a result. It was neat the way they played Rocky's speech in IV with the political changes going on at the time. Even Stallone said V sucked, but you're invested. The finale with Rocky Balboa was good, and Stallone said it was how he wanted to wrap the franchise.

Dolph Lundgren is an actor, although Rocky IV is what made him a well known actor (it was his 2nd role). He's had tons of movies after IV though (The Punisher, I Come In Peace/Dark Angel, Universal Soldier, Master of the Universe, etc).

There's a persistent urban legend that Stallone has owned the turtles for decades. In 2017, the Philly Inquirer interviewed Joseph Marks, the former owner of J&M Tropical Fish, reporting that Marks 'still owns the turtles, Cuff and Link, that Rocky bought at the fictional Adrian's pet shop in the film' (Article title: 'Owner of razed Kensington pet store recalls when Rocky came calling', published April 21, 2017).

Loving this. You're the first reactor that I've seen who's done the first 4 in one video. It is a love story...but I personally love how animated and appreciative you are for the fight scenes. I also love how the fighters...at least in the first 4 movies...kept getting stronger. Sly did some great writing/producing here. Love your looks and personality also btw.

Dolph Lundgren started out as an engineering student who got a Fullbright scholarship to MIT after graduating and getting his masters degree in Chemical Engineering from Washington State University. He was also the European full contact Karate champion from 81-82. He was bouncing in a club and met model Grace Jones, who then got him signed with the Zoli Modeling agency & he began taking acting classes and he moved to NY. He has been in over 80 movies including Universal Soldier with Jean Claude Van Damme.

Rocky defeats Clubber by using "rope-a-dope," a "bait-and-switch" strategy made famous by Muhammad Ali in his legendary 1974 fight against George Foreman. You pretend to be vulnerable, luring your opponent in so that they expend their energy throwing punches that you block or dodge, gradually tiring themselves out.
Although Mr. T did use his iconic phrase numerous times on the A-team, Rocky III was the first time.

Burt Young, who played Paulie in the Rocky franchise, was actually trained by Cus D'Amato (who trained Floyd Patterson and Mike Tyson) and went 17-0 as a professional.
According to Wikipedia: Young served a tour of duty in the United States Marine Corps from 1957 to 1959. While in the Marine Corps, he won 32 of 34 boxing bouts. He later turned pro and compiled a 17-0 record under three different aliases. His manager was Cus D'Amato. 🇺🇸🥊
