A great paint to use on parts is rustolem appliance paint. It’s epoxy based, so it’s really tough stuff when it dries. It is sold at big box blue and orange home improvement stores. You don’t even need to prime before you use it per the instructions. Great stuff for auto/marine parts.

Where did you connect your kill stop wire? Top or bottom coil?
captain, by watching your videos has given me the confidence and guidance to tackle the rebuild of a "74 9.9 johnson outboard. Im a carpenter and not very mechanically inclined. After rebuilding the carb, new fuel pump and new water pump and rebuilding the throttle gears (the plastic twist gears on the tiller handle) i put the marvel mystery oil into the cylinders and it turned smoothly. However i put the compression gauge and with a few meager pulls on the recoil i got only about 60 lbs. do you feel that i can go ahead with it and use it? if i put the 1/2" drill on the top nut and redo the compression test, do you feel that it would improve? I'm not looking for top performance as i got the motor from the metal pile at my local dump here in NH. Thanks for your excellent videos and i hope to hear from you. Your fan, Willie
When doing a compression test you turn the motor over until the gauge stops rising. It is possible that you did not pull it enough. Have you had it started yet. I would run it for a while and recheck the compression. Those 9.9 Johnson's are good little motors. I think you got a good find there. Keep me posted of your progress. Thanks for sharing. Stay Safe!!
Hi there, wondering if you can help, I just rebuilt my johnson 8hp (J8RCRM) thanks to your videos in part but I'm left with 2 - 5/16 length flush mount flat head screws that need a home. Was thinking magneto assembly or reed plate. Any ideas?
Just curious, where did you learn to do these rebuilds? Marine mechanic? Small engine school? Sure seem to know what to do and how to do it.
I started on small engine repair and started marine repair because my love for the water and the cost to take it to a dealer is so high. I ask a lot of questions of marine mechanics. Also a lot of studying service manuals. I like projects like this. Its the accomplishment of the fact you brought a old engine back to life.
Ya, you have so much incidental information it’s obvious you’ve been doing this for years. If you were my neighbor I’d be spending lots of time in your garage asking dumb questions. Your the marine mechanic were all looking for.

The mag plate is turning too hard buddy, the throttle will definitely be hard to move....Did you replace that plastic bushing or reuse the old one? Generally speaking, those plastic bushings should be considered throw away items and replaced everytime, just like a gasket. That being said, I have noticed some of the new ones seem to fit "tight". In any event, you will need to figure out why that mag plate is tight....The pilot bushing should be lubed with OMC moly lube, and the plastic bushing should be lubed with outboard oil, especially on the inside of the groove... You have one ignition harness routed under the flywheel, it will rub on it....That harness should be routed through/under the big clamp on top of the head....I liked the way your primer and paint covered easily, seems better than the OMC paints...And yeah, you will have to rearrange those head clamps in order to get everything routed correctly...This is an important step or the cover latch will jam/rip at the wires...
I will make sure the mag plate is moving better. I did not replace the plastic bushing that is the old one. I will have to order one. I will make sure I use the proper lube when working on the redo. I did not remember how the ignition harness routed I should have look it up. Thanks for pointing that out to me. I could see where the harness had been rubbing before. It was not in the correct place. Thank you for pointing out these things that are not right. I do appreciate you sharing your knowledge. Thank You
