I dunno. The NYT was about as bad in their coverage of the Vietnam war. I can judge them on several subjects about which I have professional knowledge, and their record is mixed. When was the last time you saw the New York Times refer to "single payer health care"? (OK to cheat and use Google search.) Did they treat Bernie Sanders with "fairness and objectivity"? Or the Iraq war? A.J. Liebling compared the NYT to a Jello dessert, with good reporters suspended inside like strawberries. (Like Chris Hedges.) I think the answer is that you can't depend on any news source as the well of truth. You have to use your critical thinking to separate true, false, and "not enough information." The NYT let enough good stories on the Iraq war slip through to let a skeptical reader figure out what's going on. And you need multiple sources, which is one benefit of the internet. You can't get it all in one place. (The Wall Street Journal was one place where you could get it all -- then Rupert Murdoch bought them up.) Nihil sine magno labore.

I study Drug Policy, and I came to the conclusion long ago that the NYT was pure propaganda. Nobody gets things so wrong, so often, who doesn't either a) know what they're doing or b) find the experience humiliating, & learn from it.

As an infantryman of many battles in the Vietnam War, knowing that the shock of battle destroys sexual desire and even the want to eat, I wrote a letter to the NY Times noting that I saw propaganda in “Screams Without Words…” by Jeffrey Gettleman, Anat Schwartz, and Adam Sella.
What civilians don’t know is that rapes do occur in war, but never in the heat of battle, especially of such high intensity. For instance, in WWII, thousands of German women were raped in the Russian capture of Berlin but not by the attacking troops; the following troop waves after the battle were the offenders.
In a battle with that many casualties, I am certain that no Hamas fighter pulled his pants down to use the bathroom. That close to death, the only woman a combatant would think about would be his mother!

I would argue the problem is systemic and involves the financial troubles "print" newspapers are facing (a trouble the Times doesn't have, btw) but also the fact that we all have become advertisement executives and, therefore, put how convincing our message/news/arguments are above all other attributes like correct/clear/cautious. Journalists are not Judges and they can make mistakes and that's why hedging language and humility is important: "This journalist was informed by IDF soldiers/rescue workers/passers by that so so might have happened".
Seymour Hersh published in the NYT a piece stating that the US Ambassador to Chile (around 1973) was involved in the preparing the repressive apparatus installed after Augusto Pinochet's coup that deposed Salvador Allende in 1973. The great Seymour Hersh later learned he was wrong and given the gravity of the accusation, Hersh published a 2,300 word correction on the front page of the then great New York Times.

Some countries have laws that prevent you from attacking someone breaking into your home. Laws to prevent you from assaulting an intruder who is fleeing. Laws to prevent one from using disproportionate force. So, it's time to re-spell the law to lawmakers; especially those lawmakers in the US Congress who are ignorant of the law, when it suits their purpose.

It’s not just the NYTimes. Last week I lost my favorite news source, France24. The change, the loss of honest reporting was blatantly apparent. I lost The Guardian shortly before that. Very sad.
France24 has been lying about the Ukraine war as well but that is true of practically ALL Western media. I happen to have experience in Ukraine and the Donbas, even before the Biden and Nuland putsch in 2014. But for people who know nothing about Ukraine and Russia, it is very easy to fool them with propaganda and selective information.
With Gaza you literally can watch the extermination of women and children so it's much harder to fool people, if they have empathy and an open mind.

Aljazeera needs to do documentary of how education system, and religious authorities play a role in this. I have seen numerous videos of Rabbis, preaching to these soldiers that would constitute war crimes, such as killing women and childeren and permission to rape and steal.
