- Edinburgh versus Glasgow: the ever ongoing debate! Which one of Scotland's largest cities is the best to live in? Which one is a better deal, money wise? And which one is better connected to the rest of Scotland?
In this video we originally wanted to truly compare Edinburgh and Glasgow, but knowing that you peeps know a lot about Edinburgh from my usual videos already, we ended up focusing on things you might not know about Glasgow when it comes to living there - and reasons you might want to revisit the idea of moving to Glasgow with your family!

Hey all! So I feel like many of you reeeeally want to move to Scotland, or even just pay it a big visit, and yet I rarely see people interested in visiting or moving to Glasgow! Which is a BIG MISTAKE if you ask me! Glasgow is super vibrant, super Scottish, and you would end up not having to share it with as many visitors x) What about you, would you ever consider moving to Glasgow?
Move to Glasgow? Yes, I plan to retire there.

First impression tho, I feel Accomodation is a big issue in Glasgow. At least for me (still having issues getting one till now)
I planning to move to University of Strathclyde as an international student for my MSc. My spouse and 2 year old baby ll accompany me. However mostly people have advised me to go for Manchester instead as Glasgow has less jobs and colder. Although I love Glasgow more but I am so much confused now.
I'm from Edinburgh, born and bred and I always think about moving to Glasgow. It's much cheaper for rent, has 'real' culture and not tourist dominated. I've witnessed ,since the 90's the Disneyfication of Edinburgh and I'm kinda tired of it. Glasgow is like a different planet compared to how dodgy it was in the 80's/90s.
Lived for 4.5 yrs in Glasgow and 6 years in Edinburgh. I miss Glasgow so much, if I didn't have my job and family here in Edinburgh I would move back in a heartbeat. 😊 Glasgows people are extraordinarily friendly ❤️
I'm the opposite. 37 Ed 4 Glasgow. The cultures are very different. East is East West is West never the twain shall meet.

Great video. Your representation and impressions of Glasgow are really helpful and comprehensive. I've lived most of my life in and around Glasgow and I've never exhausted its cultural, culinary or any other potential because it's a dynamic and increasingly European city.
Y'all covered so much great information in this one, thanks for big upping my city! We moved up around xmas of 2020 after three years in SE London and we don't feel like we're missing out on anything.
Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park is a 45 minute drive north, ferry services to the isles are 50 minutes west, and Edinburgh is a 50 min drive/train journey east for a slightly different flavour of architecture and food spots. It's an easy journey to places like the Lake District, Northumberland NP and the best parts of the highlands, and we have three airports within reasonable driving distance now that things are opening back up! You get way more bang for your buck here in housing and unlike Edi, we don’t have to deal with the tourist mania that is The Fringe when it's on. We have excellent parks in all quadrants of the city, tons of great music venues if you're into that (nearly all touring bands stop here), a vibrant and varied foodie culture, super nice people, loads of record shops and arts venues etc. The city size is super manageable (compared to London, anyway) and can be walked from one side of central to the other in about 30 mins. It's more affordable to live close to everything you need - we've got the West End if you're looking for a boujie hipster neighborhood or the Southside and East End if you're looking for more affordable housing in up fun, up and coming areas.
I live in Dennistoun in a pretty old tenement flat, just far enough from the city center to feel a bit more calm but close enough to walk into town for work and we absolutely adore it here. My neighborhood has a great selection of cafes, restaurants, pubs, hair salons, grocery shops, bakeries etc on Duke Street and we’re just down the road from breweries and one of the best gig venues in the city (Barrowland). I'm sure folks will love Edinburgh if they choose it but I think Glasgow and other cities outside Edi are well worth considering!

Loved this debate folks. I was born and raised in Edinburgh and love the city but have lived in Glasgow for decades and love it too. Glasgow is definitely more Scottish in its vibe while Edinburgh is more touristy. Politically, Glasgow voted for Scottish independence while Edinburgh voted for the union, which disappointed me. Glasgow is tops for me but I like that Edinburgh is close too.

Tourist info>Ask for a roll and sausage, and you get a bread roll with a piece of square sausage meat in it. But ask for a sausage roll and you get a tubular piece of sausage meat encased in pastry. 😅

If you are in Glasgow you can get the train done the Ayrshire coast and get a ferry from Ardrossan to the Isle of Arran. Go to Largs and see the Vinkingur Museum which is about the Battle between the Scots and Viking at the battle of Largs in 1069 I think have an Ice cream on the beach from Nardini's best Scottish Italian ice cream then get the short ferry to little Cumbrae and cycle round the Island. Loch Lomond and Trossachs are an Hour away. If you are fit and like camping you can do the West Highland way it takes about 3 days the scenery is amazing definitely a spring or summer thing to do.
Great video! You should do a video at Loch Lomond though, I'm biased because I stay here but you could visit and do a cruise on the Loch - Balloch, Luss and Balmaha are all on the loch and all well worth a visit.
Those are all wonderful spots! We'll definitely be back and make more content .) I think every time we went to the area it was either with my family or for a birthday trip and we ended up just lost in enjoying ourselves, not shooting! .)

I'll be there for two weeks in October and am thinking to go back again next spring for a few months. Apart from strolling the areas where people live, going to local pubs and trying some "meet-ups" is there anything you can recommend for someone looking to have an immersive Glasgow experience?
Loved to see. Used to live in Edinburgh and found it wasn't me. I liked being near it though as love it for shopping, scenery and the FRINGE so think glasgow might be for me. Liked the dynamic in the video too 😊

Lovely video! Lived in both, they both have their ups and downs, I like both, but I do prefer Glasgow.
Of course, the council is terrible at managing, promoting the city and attracting people and investment, but the city still has its own magnetism and things are moving and happening, despite the relentless voices of some locals who will never be pleased.
The food scene is better, the cafe scene, art and live music are better, the clubbing is superior, networking is easier, there’s a lot going on, and there’s a lot of youth coming from other parts of Scotland and other parts of Britain or Ireland. Many students come and decide to stay for a while or end up never leaving.
When it comes to layout and transport, Glasgow has the second largest urban rail network outside of London. Not as reliable or as frequent as a proper subway system, but definitely comes in handy with more than 70 stations within the city and over 150 in the metro area. Gives a lot of people another option, rather than the buses.
Definitely too many cars, but even with all the trains and buses, some suburbs are poorly connected so some people do really need cars. With all the suburbs and motorways and cars and drive throughs, the layout can feel a bit American even.
But of course there are areas and contexts where one simply doesn’t need a car, as you stated, Glasgow is a multicore city, with many vibrant and dense areas outside of the city centre that feel like their own towns, with plenty of walkability.
But anyways, as you said, the cities are only an hour away from each other, so living in any of them means you can take advantage of both.
I don't know why I'm watching this as I live close to both being in Dunfermline, Fife (CHECK OUT DUNFERMLINE! ITS THE OLD ANCIENT CAPITAL CITY)🤦🏻♀️ But I love both cities and I go to them for different reasons 🏴

I have to say, you have me giving some thought to Glasgow as a place to move, over Edinburgh 😲. I can't honestly say I ever seriously considered Glasgow before. The comparison in rental prices in-particular caught my attention, it was surprising to see that if I got a 1 bedroom flat there, I'd be paying a similar amount to here in Melbourne it seems. In Edinburgh I'd be paying more for sure and with fewer places, whereas Glasgow has a lot more choice at lower rents. I'll have to give it a lot of thought, it's almost a personality thing too: I think Edinburgh fits my laid back personality more, but there's a lot to be said about the active, vibrant atmosphere of Glasgow. The artistic/culture side sounds interesting too. I've had my mind set on Edinburgh for so long it's hard to consider anywhere else, but I do like the idea of more reasonable costs. I do tend to over think these things (everything!). Thanks for this vid, very informative. Would be nice to get your friend on again, it was a nice chat 😁

On First Glasgow buses for £4.50 you can buy an all day ticket and get unlimited travel on their Buses until midnight anywhere in Glasgow. You keep the ticket and it gets scanned and you find a seat. There is a challenge on the subway in Glasgow get an Unlimited stop ticket. Have a beer in a pub next to the subway station try and get all the stations clockwise and anti clockwise it is really difficult.
Edinburgh also has an all day unlimited travel ticket up to midnight for the same price. So what's the difference.

The thing is, imagine living somewhere like Monaco, Luxembourg or Zurich, how lacking in a edge and authentic street culture are those places? And the common denominator is that all those places are extremely affluent and safe, but definately are not the friendliest and most welcoming, especially if you do not display the markers of wealth, affluent and status yourself, it would be much harder to fit into places like that than it would in a place you have a higher chance of being robbed or even stabbed, like a Glasgow or Marseille for example, who have a higher rate of crime and poverty, but which are far more welcoming, friendly and open at the same time.
With the rental market in Edinburgh… And the lack of affordable housing, not TOO many people should consider moving to Edinburgh 🙃

Age is a definite factor when moving. As someone who was born and grew up in Glasgow I feel strong ties to the city. My dear old mother would try to have a holiday back home, (she still called it that) every couple of years When in her early eighties she phoned me one day to advise that she intended to move back permanently. I tried to dissuade her, that it wouldn't work, there were so few relatives left and at her age most of her friends had passed on. It was no good, so off she went. About four months later she phoned me to say that she was back in Montreal.
I'm now in my early eighties but lesson learned. it's pretty hard to turn that old clock back...........or is it?
Glasgow even has Mayfest, a comedy festival for people who hate crowds.

I always say Ta very much. I also thank bus drivers when i get off the buses which my Polish workmates found strange. A few words I grew up with are stramash, stooshie , glacit. Example of how they were used are. You have got yourself in an awfae stramash there. Your in hell of a stooshie there do you need a hand. Do I look Glacit?

I will give you many reasons NOT to move to Glasgow. As a Glaswegian born and bred in the North of Glasgow how My City has changed for the worse is shocking to say the least. It is bursting at the seams with way too many people, The City is filthy with litter & Graffiti which makes the place an utter eyesore. Junkies ie Drug addicts roam the City Centre out their boxes, dealing drugs, Shoplifting and Mugging. Beggars mostly Romanian sit on every corner pestering people for money. Let’s get to the Students Full of them making the rental market impossible, as for the Eyesores that are Student Accommodations popping up everywhere the buildings are destroying our once beautiful landscape. This City tells the World All Welcome but in reality take a closer look. Have a wander around not just the Art Galleries , the west End wealthy areas, Go into the Housing Schemes the poorer areas of Glasgow and you will have an eye opener. So sick of these videos portraying Glasgow as some kind of a Hipster City Ie West End Finnieston all the cafes etc along there are owned by Albanian gangsters these people going there throwing their cash at Criminals. Meanwhile whilst Our City Council etc welcome all and sundry into our city with a red carpet rolled out Glaswegians are being shat on from a great height we get nothing. Our City has been destroyed our amazing architecture being bulldozed for Hotel’s and Student accommodations. Make no mistake someone’s nest is being feathered. I am ashamed of my City it used to be a Powerhouse, Now it’s a Cesspit.

Agreed. Glasgow is a toilet. Yes, like other cities it has the odd decent bit in the West End and Downhill, but it's not a pretty city, the weather is shit and the accent atrocious.
