The morning my mother died of cancer I literally walked outside and prayed to god that if she couldn’t get better to just let her go because she was suffering so much. When I walked back in the house 5 minutes later she was gone. This song hits me deep. This band is so amazing. Their music connects to my soul.
I can't listen to "God Went North" without crying, no matter how many times I listen to it. Having lost someone like that, it really does hit you. Honestly, I think it hits anyone with a level of empathy in them. He really lets it out at the end, and it's impossible not to feel that pain.
i just lost my uncle who was like a father to me last week. and i've heard this song a lot but yeah dude the end hits you too hard it really is impossible when you have lost someone that close
I think what really captures this song is the raw emotion Jonny put into it. He has said in interviews that he will never perform this song live simply because the head space he was in when he sang it originally he cannot get back in to. That pain, the grief, the raw seemingly endless agony of watching a loved one pass and all attempts to sway that outcome are fleeting moments of futility, they all culminated in this song to perfectly capture his feelings. You can feel it when he screams "If you won't save her please just take her", you can FEEL the pain he felt. You can feel it as though you were in that hospital room with them, and that alone is musical power that I simply have not experienced with any other band in my 35 years.
In Jenny, he references that "she stuck around for you", in that their mother held on to life through whatever agony she was experiencing hoping that Jenny would come around and pull through. I think chronologically here it is God Went North, and then Jenny. Jonny watched his mother slip away and held her until her dying breath, and then afterwards pleaded with and screamed at his sister in evvery way he could to get her to stop fucking up and get clean because I don't think he could have stomached losing them both, mother to cancer, and sister to drug addiction. And then who knows, maybe part of Jennys addiction was her mother predicament. Only Jonny and his sister know that answer and we can only speculate. Another part is the chorus in Jenny, "maybe you should just fall, and lead the way and lose it all". I think we can assume here that he partly wishes that maybe Jenny would follow their mother to whatever comes after this life, to finally escape the impressively freakishly strong grasp of addiction, as the other line referenced "a thousand arms to hold you but you wont reach for any hands". Powerful. Direct. He says that so many people try to help her get through this, to overcome addiction and yet she never accepts the help, which is why I think when he says lead the way and lose it all, he literally means to finally die from overdose and be free. I believe there is resentment towards Jenny in that line, where he was in the hospital with their mom, Jenny was off somewhere in a drugged stupor getting fucked, or raped, or what have you, and not in the room with their mother like he was. "She stuck around for you". You can taste the resentment. That line drips with venom that only pain can create. Both unbelievable songs. Like you said, God Went North is a masterpiece, and I would wager Jenny is a very strong runner up in delivery, receiving, and execution of message. Jenny wasn't for us. Jenny was for his sister. That song had a intended audience of 1, and we just got to ride the coattails in for the performance.
What I can tell you is this is the most powerful song I have ever listened to. I can't fight back tears with this song no matter how objective I try to be, it's just somehow each time his raw emotion pulls me into that hospital room with him and I get to share that pain same as he did and it hurts every single time I listen to it and my mother is still alive and well.
As a father, I implore you to listen and react to Fade In/Fade out. It is the trilogy song to this setlist you have here.

I just discovered this song (god went north) and I just came here looking for someone who got this hit unexpentedly like I did. I did not see my face in that first scream by the end of the song. But I am sure it was similar to yours. Thanks for sharing
For just last month after discovering this band i cried more than i cried the entire life before, literally.
I can't listen to either "God Went North" or "Fade In/Fade Out" without tearing up, even though both my parents are alive and well, more or less, as well as a person can be after fighting 2 types of cancer or after being there for your spouse with cancer. And we are not distant, neither emotionally (like it's shown in fade in/fade out official video, for instance) nor locally. I down want to imagine how hard it may hit if one of them goes.
Certainly no shame in caring for our loved ones.
Hands down the most honest reaction I've ever seen. I agree with you God Went North is a masterpiece, and in no way an exaggeration of the word.
I've discovered that I search through reaction videos to find people who connect with music like I do. It seems as we age, it becomes less common for people to find empathy in music. Thank you for a raw reaction to a song about a powerful topic, and a moment shared between two strangers who both had emotive moments because of a song that hits hard!
Nothing More has become one of my favorite band of all time. And I’m 50. I have heard many bands. So much depth and arrangement. Great production as well. And they are dead on live as well.
I'm 54 just found them thanks to my 27 year old son this year. I'm hooked for life. It's the 70s all over again with unbelievable music. These songs all tell stories and they are so deep. The music is the hardest rocking. All my favorite. JONNYS VOCALS ARE THE BOMB!!!!!!!!!

Johnny Hawkins is a lyrical genius. Their bangers like Let 'em Burn and This is the Time have just as much lyrical depth and could probably give you a little respite from the emotional pain these songs (and Just Say When and Fade In / Fade Out) carry with them.
I'll add Let 'em Burn to the list but I reacted to This is the Time already and quite enjoyed it. The band is super talented and I'm surprised that I hadn't heard of them until recently.

I remember the scream vocalist/rhythm guitarist of our band named Eddie, he told us that this song was hard to go through because he lost the girl that he truly loved and would cry to this song, especially where Jonny Hawkins says I’ll hold you til the end as there is screaming in the background, Eddie was crying very viciously and he missed the girl that he loved very much, so don’t worry Brian, Eddie would give you a hug to make sure you don’t cry like him when he was heartbroken 😔

I had someone recommend me Nothing More's "Fade In / Fade Out" and their turn in the recommendation queue just happened to put the song a week after my dad passed. That band seems to always bring me to my knees -- in the best way (I guess). They're really good at what they do.
That's what music is about. The conveyance of the human condition to unify the isolated. Seriously powerful stuff. I have to recommend Architects // Gone With The Wind. Keep it up man, best reaction channel on CZcams in a technical as much as an emotional sense.
Bro when Sam Carter breaks down during the ending then the crowd chants the lyrics and just as he stands up the sparklers start raining down on the stage and he finishes the song.... I'm a grown ass man and I balled
My mother is still alive, when this song comes on my spotify, I check on my mother, she's 81 years old and in great shape but this song makes me think all the time life is so precious
I think this really showcases what has made them so special. Their music is from the heart. They all play with such passion, it's impossible for it to not take an emotional toll hearing it. Just saw them live, and they absolutely stole the show. Such wonderful people. Love them so much. 💗

The amount of times I've watched your reaction to these songs is probably way higher than it should be. Nothing More is one of my favourite bands; seen them live twice so far.
Your reactions to these songs are fantastic. because of two main things. You are really good at analyzing the technical stuff, which I don't see very often, and even though I have listened to these songs soooo many times, I still learn new things I never noticed. The second thing is that you do show the emotion that the songs make you feel.
I really hope you keep listening to them.

I think this is how the perfect reaction video should be like. When the person is smart so he understands how every detail works in music and he even connects perfectly the musical part with the lyrics and so he gets to the very roots of the whole composition. And at the same time this person isn't emotionally numb and he's reflecting everything the singer wanted the actual listener to understand, to feel, to relate maybe. Man you are that person. You are a blessing to any serious songwriter or performer. You perfectly managed even with such a song as God went north, which is so heartbreaking that personally I was teared apart by its sorrowful power. Thank you a lot for making really great content.❤

Back in 2016, I found out my father had cancer. And this song was on literally on all the time because of how uncertain my future with my father was. I seriously loved this video and how real you are with the music. It’s seriously awesome. (My father is still alive and he beat the cancer in December on 2016, he actually came to my first performance in January 2017, a month after his surgery, and I’m probably always going to remember that).

Critical Reactions it is not as bad, however it is still heavy. It is basicly a dialogue between him and his dying father. It is a masterpiece, and you should definitely check it out, though i understand if you can’t just yet.

I'd second Fade in/Fade out but also just mention that they also have some more fun songs if you'd wanna see some of their other sounds/earlier material possibly. "Fat Kid" is an older gem, with a serious message but it is also quite humorous at times. "Don't stop" is a more recent fun tune too.

Nothing more's lyrics are elite level good. This band should have blown up WAY bigger than they are
The world is still not ready for this kind of emotional vulnerability and rawness. I don't think the masses ever will be. It takes a certain type of person who can be in touch with that vulnerable part of theirselves to appreciate this music. Most just want to go through life keeping up with the Joneses never taking the time to process real true raw emotion when it stares them in the face and stuffing it all down for so long that it eventually fizzles out over time.
I really appreciate your honest genuine reaction to these songs. This is the first time I've listened to God Went North since I first listened to that album....it's one of only a few songs I can't fully make it through because it breaks me especially now as my mother is sick. Its a tough song to go through appreciate you doing that and giving your opinion on the song
Dude, I'm so sorry about your mother. I lost my grandmother years ago and that's what I was thinking of during this song. I know that losing a loved one is something tough to go through. I don't know the condition of your mother but hopefully she pulls through and gets better!

Not very many artists have a song that can make me cry. Let alone more than one. But the subjects, lyrics, and overall delivery of so many nothing more songs really get to me. These two and Fade in/Fade out are so great at that, and such amazing songs. The first time I really sat and listened to the lyrics of god went north, and really struggled to hold it together.
I always come back to your reactions to nothing more, you just feel the most real. Like you actually connect with the song while the others kinda glance over it i guess.

Just randomly searched for a God Went North reaction...great reaction!! I’ve seen them twice, once at a festival and once in a small club.
They will not perform God Went North live and during an interview on the song, the other band mates stated something like “nah, not that one, not today”.

Did you know the line "Nothing breaks her away from the promise of a better day" is based on his mother's belief in the promise of life after death? The song was also made as a plea due to his mother having had cancer before and while he didn't believe in the church for healing, his mother actually survived on faith while going to church and it gave him hope. Then after a time, she got cancer again and this is where God Went North came in asking God to take her into his kingdom if her time is then and there.

Great, honest, in depth reaction. I had the same reaction the first time I ever heard “God Went North” Jonny wrote this song about his Mom passing away and it hit me in the feels with the loss of both of my Grandmothers.
Please do Fade in/Fase out from Nothing More please. It's about one of the other band members father passing.

This popped up and I had to jump on here, I saw your reaction to Fade In/Fade Out, and I saw what you went through and my heart genuinely hurt for you, and then my father passed this last December, and I remembered that video, I actually read the lyrics to the song at his funeral. This is rapidly becoming long-winded, but I wanted to say thank you.

Their music isn't the heaviest, but they paint such vivid pictures with their powerful lyrics on real issues that affect so many. Because of this their music just resonates with you and sinks so deep. That's their true power as a band is how deeply they reach others.
I keep coming back to this reaction when i think of these songs. You did an amazing job, and you really captured the way I felt about the songs when I first heard them, and did both songs justice describing how they were put together. Thank you for this video.
I think of what I went through when my passed away in front of me and my son who was 5 or 6 all the emotions in the song coincided with me and how felt with her going through her pain the talk I had with her a few days before she passed when I heard the song it was like wow
Found out my Mom had cancer a few months back, she's done with chemo now and is in full remission but I've only recently been able to bring myself to listen to God Went North. The thought of thinking about my mother in that way was too much emotional turmoil to deal with.
Edit: I made this comment before watching the video, this song still makes me cry but I can at least make it through it now.

I hadn't ever heard God Went North before seeing this video. I paused it before you were about to start it, because I decided I had to go listen to it for myself first. It knocked me to the floor. I have never had a song bring me to tears that immediately and that deeply. I actually needed to go watch your reaction to "This Is The Time" to collect myself, and then I cried the second time, like clockwork.

I honestly don't know if I'm ready for another heart tugging song from them. God Went North and Fade In/Fade Out were tough to get through. Gimme a few months and I might be mentally/emotionally ready to tackle another heavy one.

The song Gone on The Few Not Fleeting album is also about him being on the road when she passed. She is the biggest inspiration that band has as a family. Jenny is how his sister responded to her passing and being sick. These songs are as real as they get. I love these guys for their realness to their art.
I know this is about a mother but i cant help but think of my daughter who i lost last year, at 3 days she was just suffering and i couldnt take just watching it. I knew anything was better than what she had if she wasnt gonna be saved

Lost my mum to cancer fortunately for her it was short unlike this agonising story, I cried along with you brother, liked and subscribed I wasn’t ready for God went north was my first listen too.

In the same kind of vein. If you're up for it - the song One Last Goodbye by Anathema is also an emotional masterpiece. The emotion of the song, arrangements and guitar solo together with the poetic yet hard hitting lyrics has made me cry many times. It's dedicated to the siblings in the band's passing mother. Great art, truly.
Jonny really knows how to tug at, or just straight up batter the heartstrings with his lyrics. And his vocal delivery matches that emotion and that harrowing progression.

I don't know if you saw, but I did end up reacting to Fade In/Fade Out. Bring some napkins though, it couldn't have come at a worse time for me.
Jenny has to do with with his sister dealing with depression and substance abuse and his mom spending her last year trying to help her and his sister fighting her help all the while she's dealing with cancer. The second song God went north is him begging God to help his mother while she slipping away.

You should really check out their live performance at the 2017 Loudwire awards. It's what got me hooked on the band. They played Go To War which is way better live and covers of Audioslave - Show Me How To Live and Skrillex - First of the Year.

Hymn For The missing by RED is a hard song for me. It was played at my mothers funeral 7 years ago.
My mother struggled with mental illness and addiction, and then I lost her to heart failure. So both of these songs touch me deeply and caught me so off guard. I have a ton of respect for all the music the band makes and all their messages, but God Went North is my favorite by them.

Check out Nightwish' *The Greatest Show on Earth* for a bit more of an inspirational tone. The song is about Life, and it goes through chronologically from the formation of our Solar System all the way to the present day, with spoken interludes performed by renowned evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins, whose work inspired the album.

Its same concept only the stages of loss and dealing with that loss of the vocalists father. Its a amazing track though
She hung on for Jenna, she was worried about her not being ok. She wanted her to get well.
The way Jonny actually does his vibrato is really interesting. He massages his larynx with his index and middle fingers, and I don't think I've ever seen another vocalist do that before. It does give a really different, interesting sound to his vocals.
One of Nothing Mores influences is a band called Fair to Midland. Singer did that quite a bit. HIGHLY recommend checking them out.

I've avoided both God Went North and Fade In / Fade Out after having reacted to both. They are just too emotionally charged for me to return to yet.
