  • What’s it like to drive 140 miles without touching the throttle, brakes or steering wheel? And is that driving or riding? Tom Voelk drives from Seattle to Portland on Interstate 5 in the 2019 Cadillac CT6 with Super Cruise and finds out this kind of autonomy might make you more alert, not less. And how does it compare to Tesla Autopilot?

      Adam Nelson IMHO, yes. I’m not interested in reviewers who go into just about as much detail as the owner’s manual, obsessing over every feature and warning light while leaving any insights on how the car ACTUALLY DRIVES, for the very end, like some kind of irrelevant post script.

      Many complain about the use of cheaper materials in the interior of Cadillacs and the lower level of standard equipment and features. Which I believe is unfair since Cadillac sells far less units than MB and BMW. Thus in order for Cadillac to be truly comparable to its German rivals it needs to be able to sell more - including in Europe. At this time both Cadillac and Lincoln do not sell well there - where-as the Germans sell well in both Europe and the US.

    Great review of the Super Cruise. My wife recently acquired an E450 Wagon with Merc's autonomous driving features. I was skeptical at first, you know being a "driver" and all, but the system has won me over on long highway drives. We pulled off a 350 mile interstate drive one day, and while the system on the Merc requires a hand on the wheel, it did all of the driving. I found it to be more relaxing than most highway trips.

Since I'm relatively new to your vlog, I'm rather certain you've probably covered this in detail long before now, but for the life of me, I do NOT understand why GM is eliminating most, if not all, of their sedans. Many of us older, retired adults do NOT wish to be limited to SUV's or pickup trucks.

      I will elaborate. Most of the materials in the car are quite good. But the stuff down low, below the center console and in the foot wells look straight out of a Chevy. And the seams there are wider than they should be at this price point. I know it can do better because my ELR has a terrific interior, perhaps the best the brand has ever done.

    • @mybro727
      @mybro727 Před 5 lety +5

      Driven Car Reviews Though I will say the common misconception that interior material comprises and build quality not being areas that the Germans don’t slack on is a bunch of bull-crap and just that...a misconception.
      The Audi A8L is the company’s flagship sedan and it’s exterior has fake plastic exhaust tips. The interior is also full of black shiny plastic which is ALL OVER the interior.
      BMW even on their top of the line performance trims like X3 M with the upgraded interior leather packages (if I’m not mistaken) still has hard touch plastics inside the interiors.
      Mercedes-Benz on their brand new flagship SUV the 2020 GLS has hard touch plastics throughout the interior including the doors as well. It’s top of the line GLS 580 boasted hard touch plastic on the front doors.
      So I hold reviewers to blame for these misconceptions within the auto industry. You guys have got to start telling the whole truth that not just the Americans slack on materials from time to time. Every single German brand you named cuts the same corners just like the Americans.

    It's especially useful to get the insider info that Cadillac will offer OTA updates. Other companies don't offer this, and it's good to know which vehicles will get better over time (and which will be stuck in the past). Thank you!

      The Lane Keep Assist will keep the Toyota and the Cadillac (plus many others) centered during on and off ramps, but it's different than the car being aware enough to merge and exit.

    • @nicklum3248
      @nicklum3248 Před 5 lety

      @@DrivenCarReviews The Toyota lane keep assist (on the new RAV4 Hybrid) was actually surprisingly limited IMO. It ping-ponged a little in the lane, and in my brief experience it was worse in this regard than the Honda system (in the 2019 CRV). But the real safety problem was that you can't use Toyota's LKA it in the right lane because it gets confused by exits and "keeps you centered" between the line on the left side of your lane and the exit line on the right side of your lane-which ends up driving you halfway between the lane and the exit!
      The salesman said not to use it in the right lane because there's so much entering/exiting traffic, but clearly the real problem is that the system cannot handle exit striping, even if no one else is around. Hopefully they can fix this with OTA updates or something, which look further down the road and focus on where the right-side line picks up again after the exit.

    $88,450. It's the 2nd reason why this car doesn't sell. The 1st reason is that to most people, the only real Cadillac is the Escalade. That SUV, much like the Corvette, is a brand in and of itself. GM's marketing team couldn't sell heaters in Anchorage, so it's not a surprise that this car languishes.

    • @mybro727
      @mybro727 Před 5 lety

      bassandtrebleclef this car has outsold the BMW 7-Series twice in a row since 2018. The Cadillac Escalade isn’t even Cadillac’s best selling vehicle. You people just run your mouths before doing any type of research. Lol. You don’t even know what you’re talking about.

    Nice car. Good video.
    Interesting that having the car doing the driving makes for more awareness and not less. Likely a good thing only I wonder if it will stay like that once the novelty wears off. Maybe a CT6 owner can comment should one come along.

    Thanks. I am looking to get ASAP a computer assisted car. This looks good except I wonder what expressways are not included. I am planing a trip: Ocala, Atlanta, Cincinnati, Dayton, Indianapolis, Chicago, La Crosse, Milwaukee and back to Ocala. How much of that is mapped? With Tesla I do not have to worry about that. Just where are the Super Chargers instead of this.

    I drove the CT6 that was loaded with gadgets. After 3 years of driving the ATS and the loaded CTS, I subjected myself to a living Hell. The vehicles were in the shop 24 times. Well, I drove the $88,000 CT6 and it was a good vehicle until it stopped. This car had a problem with pedestrian radar. It got confused and would even stop if it detected a tall curb. I chose not to take the car. Others who did still had this problem. Well, I now drive a Mazda 6 Signature with the same gadgets for $52,000 less!

      False equivalency. The mazda 6 does not have anything at all that does what Supercruise does. And for what it's worth I have 120k miles on my Cadillac and it's fine. No problems whatsoever.

    Cadillac Escalade and most SUV's are some of the best vehicles anyone can buy BUT besides the Escalade they all have very cheap plastics from the GM parts bin some maybe chrome plated but are the same parts and reliable transportation they aren't never mind resale value. I would ONLY lease a Caddy today and tomorrow as well.... A 1970's Caddy now that's a car your Grandkids would love!

      But autopilot requires you to keep your hands on the wheel. That's the primary difference between autopilot and super cruise. And it's a big one, enforced by federal laws. Supercrujise is the only fully hands off, fully legal cruise system in the US in production today.

      Of course you can. Using Apple CarPlay I talked to my parents, my brother, my wife and a couple automotive PR folks on my drive to and from Portland. I also texted multiple people (including my NYT editor about writing a story about the sate of autonomous driving).
      This can be done on any car with CarPlay or Android Auto, Super Cruise or not. And I am VERY cautious about phones and driving. I generally put mine where I cannot access it.
