Recently watched a show on CBC that tested using the proper equipment air purifiers and a box fan with a top of line Filtrate filter. The gobsmacking result was the DIY filtered out twice of the unhealthy air pollution twice as good as the $600 Honeywell and $800 Dyson. Good to know what you’re using actually works!
Wow, that’s impressive!
This will help a ton of us on the west coast.
If you can find a fan and merv 13 filter - all sold out!
Right!? uuuugh
@@griffwally Most any paper filter is better than no filter. I just found my old box fan, now I'm heading to town for a filter. If I have to, I'll double up on the filters to make it more efficient.
*UPDATE.....no filters in town at ALL, so I improvised by placing a white t-shirt over the induction part of the fan (it stays up by itself by the suction) and it's filtering the air pretty well. ;-)
Just bought my fan and filter today! In San Diego and my throat is so scratchy from the smoke!
This is fantastic, i'm glad i saw this video. The zip tie method seems to be much better than the duck tape. Try Amazon, or other online websites for the box fans and filters. I bet the inexpensive box fans will no longer be all that cheap anymore.
It's not as powerful as I thought it would be, but it works very well. czcams.com/users/postUgkxGjG43--gYqIoT4Xkur2PqCrtbKwTv2h6 There are three options to circulate air, and best of all a remote control for us lazy people. Installation was a breeze (no pun intended). It actually took longer to open the box then it did putting the side extenders on and sitting it in the window opening. It's a perfect alternative when you want airflow, but not the AC. Just might order another one for a different room. UPDATE: Bought another one like I said. They work great. Why not have two...
👍
I've been doing this for years. It great for catching dirt dust and pet hair/dander. I just sit my filter against the back of the fan, turn it on high and the filters are so lightweight that they up against the fan without tape or anything.
That works!
We put four of these in the house to help out with the dander, pollen, and everything else in the house we were being exposed to and it was so wonderful to have clean air and it helps the air conditioner not turn on as much and save us money! Thanks so much for giving us the idea!
That is awesome! Agreed - they are fantastic!
Ive been doing this for yrs & it is a very good idea especially in the winter when your indoors more i also put 4 small 5" feet on mine to lay fan down facing up cause dust & other particles are more low to floor & kicked up by movements & blows fresh air upwards & as a asthmatic it helps bigtime hepa filters work best. Awesome vid. 👍👍👍Pass the knowledge..
henry R. Super interesting idea there laying it flat!
@@GanderFlight Hi are you putting the filter where the fan blows air to you or on the back of the fan
@@susanabushaban2719 I prefer it on the back of the fan: czcams.com/video/zE4qmN_EOXw/video.html
This is awesome! I have an old air purifier that seems pretty inefficient and the price for new filters always seems to be going up. Great job and as others have said great pace. You really should be on This Old House.
Thanks for the kind words - I hope it serves you well!
Just seeing your vid in 2021. I built 1 of these when I was spraying the drywall in my garage with paint back in 2015. I used painters tape to hold the 3M filter (looks like your filter) on an old fan, that I figured would be destroyed and I'd pitch the fan after the job. It was winter time, and I couldn't open the doors to fresh air. While spraying, I wore a respirator, and used this setup. I changed the fan filter several times during the job. It did a great job of filtering airborne paint particulates. the fan got paint on it, but other than that, it survived to work another job!
Nice!! Lots of applications and ways to put these filters together.
I did the same thing only I used a wind speed meter, dylos particle counter, a 1” filter and a 4” filter. I found the 4” filter cleaned as well as the 1” filter but the 4” filter allowed 4x the air through. I believe that more air flow volume would have more cleaning ability.
CC Chodkowski that makes a ton of sense. What did you use to attach the 4” filter to the fan?
Yes what did you use to connect the 4 inch filter to the fan???
So you used 2 filters and did you just stick it together back to back??
Very cool! I will have to do this!
@@1998bmf no, they sell 4" thick filters. Check Amazon, but yes doing them back to back would also increase surface are and air volume
I taped 4 sides with white electrical tape. Looks decent, gets removed easily if I need to change the filter or return the fan. They don't last long sometimes. Make sure you keep the receipt :-D Thanks for idea GF :-D
Try painters tape - little less “gooey” than electrical tape
Good job, That answers my question on air flow arrow , Put arrow towards front of fan.....Thanks JJ
👍
I've been making these for years they are by far the cheapest AND most effective by a huge margin. Also these can be washed and sterilized and even the best $800 purifier cannot be easily pulled apart and washed. Even though we've quit smoking they are still black after about 45 days, proving effective.
Yes, being able to take them apart for cleaning is definitely a positive thing about them.
Right now I have two of these running in my house due to wild fire smoke that is very heavy and ground level now for several days. The filters have smoke colored rings on them, and the air in the house smells better. If you use blue masking tape, it leaves zero gum on the fan.
Putting the filter on front ensures that all the air going "forward" is cleaned. If you put the filter on the back, the front of the fan surface will scoop up dirty air from the front of the fan and circulate it with the clean air. But most importantly it blocks up the fan and is a fire hazard. I would avoid it.
A better configuration uses two filters taped into a triangle shape with some cardboard to fill the gaps. That is much more efficient for the fan and will heat up the fan motor much less.
thanks I was wondering about that
I also wondered about the placement of the filter. I made one last night with a new Lasko fan but found that it left a wierd smell in the room. Kind of like the smell of a new car or something not healthy. Did you have this problem?
When the fans get hot they do smell. If possible don't run constantly and keep on the low setting. This is just my experience.
@@phil562 Good point. I'm trying it on a low setting to see how that work. My gut feeling is that cheap fans (like the Lakso one I got at Home Depot) have low components in the spinning shaft and that these produce the smell. I've wondered about using a bathroom ceiling fan instead, though they are not as powerful as a box fan.
Phil when you don’t have a closed system from one side of the fan to the other it doesn’t make a difference which side the fan is on as either configuration will immediately mix with the rest of the air in the room as soon as it passes through. Filter on the front however will leave you with a much dirtier fan that will need to be cleaned more often. And according to my testing filter on the front or back did not heat up the election motors at any significant level.
Hey There Dude......What a Great Idea.....I'm So Excited to give this a try....I live in AZ. and the dust here is Crazy.....i also suffer with Asthma and I'm getting over Pneumonia. I live in an apartment with neighbors on each side who smoke and I can smell it and it causes me to cough and get headaches. This so going to be such a Big help. I don't think it looks bad either, as for the sound....no big deal for me....I'll sleep better because the fan will help cover some of the outside noises. Thank You So Much !! I'm going to tell my Kids and Family about this too. Stay Safe and Stay Well....GOD BLESS !!
Fantastic! I hope you get one made up and that it serves you well!
You learn something new every day. I was looking for the Filtrete home filters with the febreze collaboration. I don't think they make them anymore. Anyway... got me going down a rabbit hole and somehow I landed here. So glad I did.
There are commercial versions now available too: czcams.com/video/N_B4LSa0NDE/video.html
Wow that is way too easy! Thanks for sharing! I like things done the simple way.
Enjoy!
I'm a single mom and I just want to say thank you! I got 2 lasko fans today and this is a great idea you help me save money ... thanks again
I'm glad you found it helpful! Cheers to cleaner air :)
My brother you are a genius, I'm so impressed with this project, I had to run out the next day and make it for my house. And I also subscribe to your channel...God bless...
Thank you Fidel!
How interesting as someone who is challenged with tools this one looks much easier!! Love it. Anna In Ohio
Enjoy!
thanks amigo... in cali fires now and can't breath so appreciate the video.. i had one on backwards. it helps alot
I made one last night with a new Lasko fan but I found that it left a weird smell in the room where I ran it for an hour or so. It smelled kind of like a new car or something not healthy. I believe that the smell is coming from the motor of the fan as it heats up. So while I believe the design was doing a good job of removing particulate matter, unfortunately I believe it is releasing volatile compounds that may not be good to breath. Did you or anybody else have this problem? Could this be solved with better quality fan?
Dr Eric Brennan USDA-ARS Is your fan overheating? Is it an older fan? If so that could be an issue.
@@okaminess It was really bad from a new Lasko fan from Home Depot but was also there with an 20+ year old fan.
You're welcome!
Probably someone already mentioned this in 680+ comments.
I simply turn on the box fan and place the filter on the back... easily held in place by air pressure (vaccum)
Thus I don't need to make any changes to fan or filter. At end I simply turn off fan...filter leans against fan.
Next use I turn fan on and "apply" the filter to the back, again held in place with no physical bracket.
Here I use it mostly for summer wild fires. Can run it all night if wanted.
That'll do!
Good video - be sure to get your air flow in the correct direction through the filter, whichever side of the box fan you mount your j-channel. Don't put the filter in backward! It's usually best to pull the air through the filter then past the fan.
Absolutely critical - great point!
So put filter on the side where the air blows? I see some people putting the filter on the suction side of the fan.
@@Hboogie182 filters have a one-way arrow because they are meant to be used one-way regardless of where/how they are mounted in the airflow. They often tear or don't work at all if put in backwards. In addition, I get good results mounting the filter before the fan so the fan pulls the air through, both in self-standing box fans and built-in duct or HVAC fans.
Wile E Coyote Genius. Thats a great idea I've been looking at those isolating fans and then you have to clean them and this is easy all the time. Great idea.
Enjoy!
Thank you for the video,. I’ve viewed a number of box fan videos and your’s appeared to be the most simple. “Elegant” solution. I purchased the J-channel over the weekend and the filters. Will be setting up a couple this week and will report back the results. Thanks Again.
You are so welcome, hope they work well for your needs!
We have had the fan running in our barn and it is doing a grear job filtering the hay dust. I was able to follow your instructions and everything worked as described. thanks again.
This is the best and simplest DIY air filter I ever see. Thanks alot
Wow, thanks!
Thanks for the video! The filter gives the fan a sort of rolling wind sound that’s very pleasant.
I enjoy the white noise while sleeping as well.
Thank you so much I put three filters behind the fans about three fans and I noticed a difference after two or three days now I don't have no more stuffy nose and my daughter would take no more it does work thank you very much
I don't think I would triple up these 1" filters - you would be better off going with a 20x20x4 inch filter.
I have pets and this would be great to have in each room!
Definitely helps with the pet hair and dander!
This is great thanks. Keeping it simple. I’m going to give this a shot using Velcro to affix the J channels. And will definitely put the filter on the back (inflow) side like you did so the fan itself stays cleaner longer (good call).
Curious about the velcro- I can envision that making it more complex to change out the filters. Tell me more 😀
@@GanderFlight I will let you know ... I am sitting in front of my fan right now ... second guessing that "brilliant" idea. BUT ... I will try it and get back to you!
@@GanderFlight So, I never got to the velcro. I bought some ... the 3M strips with for hanging stuff on walls. But then I realized that the intake force of the fan would hold the filters in place. Its in the garage so I don't care how it looks. Non velcro, no platicuffs, no drilling, just physics. Its all good, though. Whatever works for anyone works. I just placed a charcoal filer against the inflow side of mt box fan, and a standard filer against that. Both stay in place even on low speed. Win win.
When I put an air filter on a box fan, the motor fried after a month of continuous use. Rather than buying another box fan, I removed the motor from the box fan and used the fan case as a filter holder for use with Shop Air floor blower. I used a 4" dryer hose to connect the two together. I glued a 4" hose connector to the floor blower inlet and attached a 4" hose connector to the other side of the box fan case with cardboard to fill in the rest of the open space. This more complicated set up seems to be working. I test the section by laying a tissue on the air filter, and it does hold the tissue in place. The floor blower also jets the filtered air across the room even on low. I've used this set up continuously for well over a year now.
Interesting setup!
Plus, it is a pain to disassemble and clean a fan. This will keep the blades from getting gummed up.
Whats Going to Break Next? - DIY You’ve got that right!
same. i dont need the air purification but cleaning a fan is getting painfully slow and we have plenty fans here
Yes thank you 😊
Hey not sure if someone mentioned it but at 4:40sec as you're installing the filter, I believe the filter is on backwards since the filter is behind the air flow. I literally just started my air purifier machine in which was gifted to me and here I am watching DIY air cleaners lol
At 3:50 you can see the air flow arrow pointing in the correct direction.
Great video. I must have watched a dozen on how to build one of these and this video is by far the best! Thanks a lot.
BTW: The tip on buying at Ace is much appreciated.
Glad I could help!
I recommend putting a filter grille on the fan as a holder.
Whats a filter grille?
Great instructions! Great Pace! Good on camera presence! I could definitely see you on PBS' This Old House. I'll be making one in the morning. Thank you for posting.
Thank you for the kind words! Hope it helps you out.
@@GanderFlight Hello, the person I built it for is very satisfied with it. She is homebound because she is in the high risk group. I gave you all the credit! So thank you again!
Great idea. I'm going to try this. Good for privacy also which when your side living room window faces your neighbor's living room.
👍
So I picked up a cheap $2 cloth filter setup from Walmart. Had actually been thinking about something like this for awhile and decided to look more into it. The j-channel idea is great. Going to set this up soon. Thank you!
Glad I could help!
BRILLIANT! So simple. J channel vinyl sliding trim with zip ties. ty..wtg
👍🏻
AWESOME! gonna get me one!
I've been pricing an air filter, the replacement filters are almost as much as the unit cost! I have a box fan and zip ties, just need that J thingy he was talkin about
Good luck!
What size is the J-channel ?
J-channel White 0.625-in x 150-in Vinyl Siding Trim www.lowes.com/pd/Georgia-Pacific-J-channel-White-0-625-in-x-150-in-Vinyl-Siding-Trim/50133870
Yea. What is it?
I was thinking of that size filter that my mom used for her hvac system in Vero Beach. So I googled how to attach it and I found you! I subscribed and Thumbs up! I presume zip ties I can get at a Lowe’s or Home Depot here in New Jersey. 👍🏻
Yes any hardware store will have them, walmart too!
Cool idea. Just so you know, you have installed the filters backwards. As the filters clog with dust, they tend to get pulled in towards the fan blades. Furnace filters should always be installed with the wire mesh side facing the fan blades. In this way, the fan is protected from making contact with the filter, as it gradually gets pulled inwards with use.
There is an arrow that indicates airflow on the filter- I installed it according to that.
The more expensive filters will sometimes have the wire mesh on both sides to help protect the spacing of the pleats.
That Is a great idea. I'm still using duct tape to hold my filter
The siding tracks make it super simple to switch out the filters with no sticky residue left over ◡̈
Duct tape is sticky overkill, use masking tape. No need for the J-channel slots.
Use gaffer's tape. No residue.
Ohmygod! I did this thing once, where I put milk on cereal. All joking aside, you are one industrious dude.
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment Brian.
I've been using two of them in our home for quite a few months. We live in California where the wild fires are horrific. Air quality has gone downhill steadily for the last few years creating a dangerous situation for our children's lungs and our own. We currently use Home Depot FPR 10 20×20×1 air filters taped with gorilla glue duck tape to the back of affordable floor fans. This works wonders. The air quality in our home is phenomenal. I will be using these type of air filters in our home for the rest of our lives versus the 300 and 400 dollar hepa versions. Literally cost us 46 dollars per air filter unit and we are changing the filters every 3 months. The savings is astronomical as compared to the expensive units. Wish we would have done this years ago. Be sure to buy filters that filter out the pollutants you're wanting to reduce. Not all filters are created equal. Cannot say enough positive things about these filter units.
Love it! Glad they work well for you too!
@@GanderFlight I believe the J channel is an excellent idea. Only concern we have here is allowing any wildfire smoke to bypass the filter. It's a terrible pollutant capable of destroying the lungs much quicker than most. So we use duct tape to make absolutely certain nothing is getting around the air filter. If we weren't dealing with wildfires I'd use the J channel in a heartbeat.
This is the best DIY Air Filter/Box Fan Modification that I've seen on youtube. TY.
Thanks! Glad you've found value in it and the subsequent videos on these filters
Use a 4" thick filter. The box fan will struggle with providing enough air pressure or "force" to overcome the resistance of the filter. A thicker filter will increase the surface area of the filter and effectively reduce the resistance on the fan. If you need more than about a MERV 8 filter, consider using a different type of fan.
Follow up video here --> DIY Box Fan Air Filter - ARE THEY SAFE? czcams.com/video/zE4qmN_EOXw/video.html
I have 3 box fan filters, one in our bedroom, one in our basement that are turned on with timers. Each runs about 12 hours at a time, the bedroom one all night on low speed(white noise). The third in my shop. It has reduced the dust in the house by 75-90% according to the wife. A frame is attached to the fan, the cord is rerouted to the front, and the frame holds 4 18 x 18 merv 13 filters(removes 98% of dust particles) . Higher number filters will challenge the fan in its ability to draw air through ( cheese cloth vs heavy towel doubled up).
Very cool setup Neil! What did you build the frame holder out of?
@@GanderFlight I used 4 - 1 x 3 (21 1/2" & 22 ")and to make a box around the fan and a second identical box for the far end.
To connect the boxes, I then used 8 1 x 3 x 21" to form four L brackets. Be sure to leave about 1 inch space on rear box to accept the filter.
The bottom section is a piece of 1/ 8 luan plywood cut to fit.
Cut some blocks 1 x 1 to support the filter. I placed a filter in place, and nailed them on the top and bottom. If less than 4 inches in length use 2.
To hold the filter in place, I cut 8- 1/8 x 1 x 3" pieces of luan as latches. These are fastened to the boxes on the sides. The filters are 1 inch and the wood is 3/4" so loosely fastened them with screws.
When running the fan will draw the filters tight, and when not the latches and blocks hold them in place.
Our bedroom one is sitting on top of a tall dresser with a rug or towel under it. The basement one is also on a tall cabinet, but with open joists could be fastened to it. My shop one sits on the floor and also serves as fan for my wood-burning stove. It has an angled base. It requires cleaning once a week. I have washable filters in that one.
This project helped my asthma symptoms. Thank you!
You're very welcome.
This is awesome, so easy. Most of the ones I have seen involve a lot of work cutting boards etc. to make a box.
👍
What s great idea with the J-channel! Thanks!
Any time!
great stuff bro, didn't even think of this, was using tape lol
Glad I could help!
Genius! (And all the women are thinking about the fragrance attachments that can go on the backs of the filter.)
*Btw, will Velcro strips work in place of screws or zip ties?*
***
On another note.
Years ago my A/C went out during a heat wave. While at the grocery store I overheard the CS rep joking with a customer about blocks of ice people used to put in front of their fans to keep cool. They laughed& laughed as the lightbulb went off above my head. I promptly returned home, filled empty milk jugs with water& froze them. They were frozen by nightfall, enough to sleep comfortably until I could get my unit fixed.
I would think velcro should work too - or even painters tape to hold the filter in place. And the ice evaporation coolers are definitely something to keep in the back pocket for situations just like yours!
nice. was going to get a box fan, as where we live it's warm during the day, and with this in the window we can cool our bedroom from cool night air and not worry about dust, as well as use considerably less power!
Enjoy! Make sure you change the filter regularly, I've found a reoccurring appointment on my calendar to change it is helpful!
Thank you. Good idea to use tie tie and the J-channel. So, easy to set up and undo.
You bet! I really like that its all semi-permanent and can all be undone in a matter of minutes.
putting a smart wifi plug and setting auto timers on this will be great!
Those would be great additions!
You must be very industrious! Cool idea!
The smoke from wildfires was really bad last year in Colorado and we were using a box fan in our window at night to draw in cool air - and smoke. Looks like I will now be in the market for some J-channel and zip ties. Thanks for posting your "How to ..." video. Many folks the world over can now improve their health for a few cents per day.
You're welcome - glad you found it helpful. Hopefully this years season isn't as active.
This is VERY helpful now that WA, CA, and OR are going through huge Wildfire Smoke! Thank you for this.
You're very welcome!
I watched a few videos on this subject and your idea is the best! Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it!
Excellent video - Your J channel idea is terrific. I ordered a box fan 2 days ago and was planning on building a wooden frame to hold the filter in place but your J channel idea is far better.
It works well and is super simple to attach. Hardest part it cutting it to length 😀
Do I need to purchase one J Channel or two?
This is a good design. It’s is inherently stable. Many are taping the filter to the front which is inherently unstable. Millions of these will be produced and the unstable designs will eventually cause a fire.
I do like how the additional weight is over the support feet on the back as well.
This would/should work for classrooms, to reduce the risk of airborne Covid virus being spread. Thanks!!
👍🏻
Loved your DIY, very simple; it is something that I can do!
Absolutely! I hope you do ◡̈
Going to get a filter to try this I’ve been so stuffed up and having runny noses in my house but don’t wanna spend the hundreds of dollars on the air purifiers at the store. Going to see if it helps plus it’s nice cause you can see in the filter when it gets dirty all the dust and stuff it’s taking out of the air
you might give this option a try: czcams.com/video/N_B4LSa0NDE/video.html
The j-channel is the simplest and easiest method that I've seen. Thanks!!
You're welcome!
Hey man, thanks so much. Just my grain of salt, for filters, cheaper is not always better. Buy good quality filters guys, if you’re gonna do all this work;)
👍🏻 thanks for the opinion
Just seeing your video, thanks. You did a awesome job.
Thank you!
This is a great idea! West coast love on base, no A/C I’m gonna do it. Thanks
You’re welcome.
Thank you so much my daughter have allergies and asthma and this would help Her a lot especially right now with all this smoke.
You are so welcome!
Thank you so much for this video! I have severe dust mite allergies and unfortunately can’t get rid of my carpet but this is an amazing solution! Going to try it asap! :)
I hope it helps!
did it help with dust mites?
@@system_m I ended up getting an actual air filter. So it was air filter, keeping the carpet vacuumed and emptying the vacuum container in a bag while outside, washing my clothes and blankets in hot water (hot water kills dust mites), and occasionally opening windows to let in fresh air helps as well.
@@chere3695 thank you for the detailed list!
Thank you soo much for sharing this!! I have asthma. This would help sooo much and help clean air that much more for my whole family as well!! 👍🏻🤘🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Glad it was helpful!
I love this idea!
I did this and had to use duct tape as the only filter the store had was 2 inches smaller than my fan. But I love the J channel traps. I'll do that when I replace the filter
Way to make do!
Cool hack. My utility high velocity fan has over 3000cfm in its lowest settings and over 5000cfm in medium and over 7000 or 8000cfm in highest setting but it's too loud. I'm better off making a box frame to put 4 sided filters for my design so that it efficiently moves a lot of air thru the filter.
If you have the space for it - the filter cube will definitely perform better.
I have been off and on for a week looking for a good air purifier (AP) (overwhelming) Reading some many reviews from the top 10 AP & when I thought I found one the issue was replacing the filter which will cost more than the air machine itself which makes no sense to invest and be paying $30-100 maybe more a life time to replace filter every 3/6 months. Or it has some kind of malfunction after a week/6months. I got a recommendation on my CZcams same video as this one(before looking at this DIY)from Michigan Medicine(very old video which I see have come around 2020). I know for sure how long box fans last and this DIY will be very cost efficient so I will be doing this ASAP maybe add some color to the frame or get a covered made for it.
M. Magdalene Ford RN, Future ANRP adding color could really liven it up!
Wow I'm making one now thanks 👍
No problem 👍
No BS simple design, thanks. Wonder if this would be effective for filtering spray paint for ex?
I think it would definitely help! There is a commercial option now available too: czcams.com/video/N_B4LSa0NDE/video.htmlsi=hDDaqR5wUq0hOQz4
OUTSTANDING!
Thanks for watching!
Also the last time I checked, Lasko now has its own "Air purifier". I guess when they found that their box fans was used like what you did, they decide to add the fixture to their box fan, and sell it as a brand new product! It just comes out. At least on Amazon, in maybe one or two months !
Yupp I did see that they've created that product. Depending on the price it might be a better option than the DIY version.
I have a couple of those cheap fans and even on the fastest setting, the air flow wouldn't move a fart. I can't imagine that putting any kind of filter on it would move enough air to be useful.
Interesting- I've had a handful of box fans and they've moved plenty of air - with and without a filter.
@@GanderFlight I think my fans are just junk. Might get an attic fan and try it. They move a lot of air.
Cool beans! Going to make this!
Have fun!
Thanks for posting this, very helpful here in Washington State.
Glad it was helpful!
If you don’t see an arrow the side that has some type of support structure (this could be cardboard, nylon webbing, etc.) goes towards the box fan.
👍
I would've liked to see the detail on attaching the J-Channel as to exactly what line of grid to pull the zip ties through, how to snug them up so the j-channel sits good. It seems like you spoke more than showed detail. Overall I appreciated your video and the guidance.
Thanks for the feedback - the j-channel has holes all up and down and I just ran a zip tie in around one of the holes in the fan grate along the edge - as long as the filter fits there isn't necessarily a "right" way to do it. Thank you so much I actually just now did it just now got done with it very simple very easy I love the idea thank you so much keep the fan clean we used my wife's crochet hook for the zip ties
You are so welcome - crochet hook is killer way to pull those ties through the grates!
Thanks I made it by following your instructions 🙏🙏🙏
Awesome, glad to hear it! Thanks for letting me know :)
Ive taped a 5 inch thick filter to a fan, works relatively well.
However I tried another design, 4 thin filters on sides, cardboard base, and fan on top blowing up. Tape it all together. Tons of airflow with this design.
Personally I'm fine with tape over an engineered mounting bracket. Tape seals pretty well. Depends on how often you need to replace the filters I suppose.
Yeah thats a very common setup - and if you have the room for it it will definitely filter more since there is more area available on the multiple filters.
Thanks so much for your help & research
You are so welcome!
I put the filter on the back, with the air flow arrow pointing the direction the fan is blowing. I can't see any reason why not to do it that way, although maybe I'm wrong. The force of the draw on the fan at full speed seems to hold the filter securely in place. I don't plan on using this when I'm not around though. I'm pretty sure it overworks the motor and I don't want to worry about it catching fire.
👍
I loved this! You did such a great job not only explaining, but also demonstrating, how easy to create this air filter. I like you sped up the film through parts saving us time as well. Great job. If I go to my local Lowe's or Home Depot and say, "I want a three foot piece of 1 inch J-Channel, will they know what I'm talking about? :)
They will know what the J Channel is - but it will come in a much longer length than 3 feet and I doubt you'll get them to cut it for you (as it can chip on the power saws) but you could stop by the hand miter saw station near the molding section and use the one they have provided for customers.
Thanks... Very simple and ingenious.
Hope it saves you some money!
😎 Cool 👍
👍
The most elegant and simple method of an air purifier . Best !
I agree!
Great idea but where did you get those vinyl j channel, big box sells them by the big package.
Got them at Lowes - had to buy a single long piece and then cut it. If you want an off the shelf option check this out: czcams.com/video/N_B4LSa0NDE/video.html
Great video. I will be getting the j channels and setting it up your way. Thank you!!
Have fun!
thank you sir for sharing your idea and knowledge around the world during this pandemic . may god gives you prosperity and happiness in your life .
Youre welcome.
I had made them many times. The 1st one the box fan usually burns out quick Had them last as little as 1 month to 2 years.
Interesting - I've had some that have been running for way longer than 2 years with no issues.
use 2 bungee cords to hold the filter.. .it works
Thanks for sharing - good idea.
Terrific! Thank you.
You're very welcome!
Congratulations that’s a awesome idea. Wow 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻Thanks for sharing
