Rim to rim across the grand canyon may well be the grandest hike in the world, but crossing the grand canyon on foot is not a trek to be undertaken lightly. This is the final entry in the Essential Rim to Rim guide. If you plan to hike anywhere in the canyon, and most especially if you plan to hike or run rim to rim then this full series is absolutely critical viewing.
Far too many people are entering the canyon with bad advice they've gotten from the internet or elsewhere and it's leading to a startling number of deaths in the grand canyon.
This series helps you get the most out of your grand canyon visit and helps you gain the knowledge you need to fall in love with the canyon and explore this natural wonder safely.
Enjoy reliable information and stunning 4K HDR footage of this incredible landscape

The canyon is amazing, and doesn't need to be dangerous if people put in the time and effort and remain respectful of the canyon. Thanks so much for watching and for your kind feedback!!!

@@justinpolley2490 Boy am I jealous. If you're staying at Phantom Ranch, I assume you have a cabin or dormitory. Correct?
If so, you'll be able to shed some bulky items like a tent and sleeping pad. But if you're visiting in January it would be best to consult your reservation info on whether a sleeping bag is necessary. I know the cabins include bedding, but not if a sleeping bag wouldn't be helpful in January.
Beyond that, I think the advice in this series coverings best training, nutrition and gear practices. Have you watched part 1 and part 2?

Really enjoyed your three part series on your rim 2 rim in the Grand Canyon. An alternative to your hike, I did two rim 2 rim 2 rim hikes, with a group, while staying in the canyon for four nights. I was in my early 60’s and found this manageable and allowed for morning hiking and afternoon exploring. Still my favorite hikes.

I have two tips for you. If you are hiking between Nov. and May, the water is turned off at all sources but the campgrounds. I carried an extra liter up the north rim and left it at Supai tunnel for the return to Cottonwood. Have the right clothes for the bottom, it can be 30 degrees warmer than on the rims. Otherwise I would treat it like any other amazing hike.

Well, I survived the Rim to Rim hike!!! It was more like a spiritual pilgrimage. Am so proud of myself…12.5 hours at a leisurely pace…remembering the social and natural history. I’ve met several Germany and Swiss hikers…and a 75 years old retired fire fighter at 2 am in the morning just before I reached Phantom. He recommended me to rest on the bridge for 1/2 hour to get away from poisonous scorpions snakes and spiders. It was full moon and the canyon was fully lite up…very magical. I helped out a family of four who was not prepared both in pacing, hydration as well as fuel.
I liked it so much that I returned the following week and hiked from Kaibab to Bright Angel.
I plan to return every Sept and Oct. I think Muir was correct about the mountains as your home.

great series of videos. I hiked south to north (bright angel to n kaibab) this past weekend. this is what I would do differently:
-pack smaller more calorie dense foods and eat more of it
-wear a chest pouch or fanny pack in front to keep snacks accessible. pain in the ass to only eat when stopped and taking your pack off to access the food
-train harder for the last 5 miles. I did a ton of hiking and long walking but should have done more cardio. after we passed manzanita on the steep sections (it's almost all steep sections) when my heart rate got over 160 I would have to stop for a minute or two til it dropped below 140. that means about every 10th of a mile I had to take a breather
-lost more weight. I'm 54 yrs old and 5'11''. Started training 3 months pryor at over 265lbs. hiked at 240lbs. I wouldn't attempt this again unless I was below 215lbs.
made it out in 13 hrs. 5:30am to 6:30pm
fyi the water out of the spigots tastes like it came out of a garden hose

Typically, the gates are open early in the morning but not staffed. Since you’re entering the park so early, consider getting an America the Beautiful pass at REI prior to your trip.
Otherwise, you’ll need to make plans to purchase a pass after completing R2R. Our parks need the funding, make sure to contribute.
I buy an America the Beautiful pass every year. Best $80 purchase I make.
Hope that helps! Good luck on your crossing. First time?
