Appreciate this video! I’m doing the exact route in May (except I’m 53 and will be spending the night at phantom. I’ve been scouring videos. Yours is one of the best I’ve seen. Truly appreciate the detail in the elevation gains at each point to wrap my head around it. For a second I thought you were the guy who plays Felix in the show in the dark.

I parked my motorcycle at the visitor center then walked to south Kiabab trail head , headed down to phantom ranch for lunch, then walked up bright angel trail. My Garmin tracked me for over 18 miles, in 7 hours 15 minutes, I was 68 years old. I trained for two weeks in Durango Colorado mountain biking , hiking, road cycling prior to Grand Canyon hike. Afterwards I felt like I ran a marathon.thank God for the shuttle ride back to visitors center

I’ve watched this video 5-6 different times. Used it for research before making my own South Kaibab-Bright Angel day trip. Made that trip in fall 2021. My 17 year old son wants to do the same trip this fall 2023. So I’m preparing again by gathering knowledge months away from our hike.
I just wanted to say thanks for making this extremely well done and informative video. This is perfect for teaching people what they need to know. This trip could very well be deadly if a person isn’t prepared properly.

We did that during the winter of 2020 and there was ice and black ice all over the trail. We WENT down Bright Angel and had heavy packs due to having to bring lots of water planing to come up Kaibab Trail (there is no water there) plus having raincoats and light and extreme weather arctic jackets and gloves plus warmers food and batteries. We could not go fast due to the slippery conditions. It was 3 pm by the time we got to Panthom Ranch. There was a blizzard coming the following day, so we decided to climb back up through the night. The snowing turned into icicles and we had to use ski masks and eye protection. We had very good flashlights and were able to see through the snow and heavy winds at the Altiplano of The Tipoff. We thought staying at the little shack in The Tipoff but the walls were made of chicken wire and the heavy subfreezing winds and snow were going through the walls and hitting us very badly while were rested there for about 30 mins. We decided to continue. It was scary with limited visibility by the skeleton point but we decided to continue all the way coming back up at around 5:30am of the following day. We took a taxi to the parking lot passed the Village and went to sleep at the hotel all day and night. We just got up to eat and were glad we made it back on time to skip the blizzard that hit very bad. The morning of the following day after sleeping at the hotel a few miles down from the Village was very nice with snow all over. We drove to Meteorite crater and then to Phoenix and flew back to Houston. During the summer with nice weather, you do not have to pack all the heavy clothing and emergency flashlights and batteries. It was worth the adventure. This time we are going during the summer and hopefully we do not have to carry so much stuff, but I think it is not worth to do it all in one day since it is exhausting and you cannot really stop and enjoy the scenery. We are planing to go down, stay the night and come back up the next day, this time coming back up light on water since we are coming back up by the Bright Angel Trail and there are several water points on the way. We have a water purifier, just in case, and we can get water from the stream. There is NO water in the Kaibab Trail!!! If you are planing to climb that route BRING PLENTY OF WATER!

Just hiked the South Kaibab trail to OohAhh point and back up, last week. It was a gorgeous afternoon and a fantastic introduction to hiking down into the Grand Canyon. However, we forgot to bring water with us, and realized our stupidity on the hike back up. We had parked out on the road, and fortunately we had lots of water in our car. But yes, we know to always always bring plenty of water on any hike! ! It was not smart. This is a great video! Sometime, we hope to hike all the way to Phantom Ranch.

    • @GrandCanyonTV
      @GrandCanyonTV  Před 3 lety

@@natpradachar9837 Wow. Glad you made it out. I had a similar experience in August of 2018. I had camped at Bright Angel Campground, and I do enjoy the bottom of the canyon in August because the creek and waterfalls feel really nice in contrast to that 110plus heat. My struggle had come on the way back up Bright Angel the next day. I ended up spending a few hours in the 1.5 mile rest house dumping water on my head and closing my eyes until I was ready to complete the hike. August is a great time to enjoy the cold river and cold creeks of the Grand Canyon, yet most locals would never go to the bottom in July or August.

Well ... the only thing I'd say is: "what's your hurry?" Instead of "rushing through an art museum," why not try a multi-day trip?
    (1) South Rim. (2) Phantom Ranch overnight ... "steak or stew, take your pick, have a beer or wine." (3) Indian Gardens overnight ... sunset excursion to Plateau Point not to be missed ... (4) Back out - maybe El Tovar? Each stage is actually "about four miles or less," and wonderfully scenic.
My wife and I enjoy some variation of this - or some other GC trip - almost every year. (Yeah, we've heard all of the "Halloween at Phantom Ranch" ghost stories by now.) Yes - even though "your first trip" is quite daunting, "it surely will not be your last!"
DON'T "HURRY." Stop and enjoy. You have nothing to prove. Pick a "favorable" time-of-year to plan your hike ... we like September or October ... and then, give yourself plenty of time to fully enjoy where you are, without self-induced pressure to "make it to the next station."
Bring plenty of water - AND put "Gookinade" in your water - and then, SLOW DOWN!!

Your a beast! Your 7:32 time is awesome. I did this trail last May and was almost the guy that dies I’m going back for round 2 in a week. I’m a lot more prepared this time around and the electrolyte tabs are a must.

I did this hike on 5/20. It was absolutely brutal!
Thank God for the Rangers and the people on the trail. I ran out of salt pills....

I’d love to see this format of video done with other national parks. Good overview of geology and hiking ~
Maybe I’ll make one of the Everglades. Elevation 0. Wet. evidence of ocean

Thanks for the video. I hiked this trail down to Phantom one week before you, so interesting to see a different perspective. It seems like the snow was packed down a little bit more than when I hiked down. Looks icy.

That fresher snow is best, better grip. Had you been to Phantom before? Any advice for the first time hikers checking out this video?

Awesome video! Planning to do r2r2r in March 2022, but there’s a lot of information here!

Great video. i was just there (March 10-12th, 2020), but just did the South Rim - didn't go down in. After watching your video, though (and another) I think I can do the South Kaibab as I am afraid of falling from heights and while a few sections looked dicey, I think I could do it. Definitely NOT in one day, though. Kudos to you.

Yes, as you can see it is indeed steep at certain points, yet a lot of the trail has a nice shoulder to it. A trick you can use if the heights stir you, is to hike down before sunrise so you are only seeing the trail in by your headlamp. Also you could hike up in the evening or early morning as well.

10 years ago I had my photo taken under that thermometer in August. It read 115F at the time. Did a down and back on BAT.

Love your videos! I visited the Grand Canyon for my first time ever in 2018 and have been back twice since. I did the same hike you did last December, and had exactly the same time: 7 and a half hours. I didn't have anywhere near the amount of localized information in my head you do. How do you have all these details at hand so readily? I assume you grew up there!

Just did this same hike yesterday. Your commentary was excellent. We learned lots of facts that we wish we knew before we made the hike. We took about twice the time that you took. Not in the best of shape... it was brutal.....but an awesome experience. Thanks for sharing.

That's great, it always hurts afterwards (even though I've done it dozens of times) I find as time goes on I start to miss that pain, and then you've just got to do the hike again.
