R2R2R Solo Grand Canyon Run in Winter Snow - Bright Angel to North Kaibab

- For this run, I was not certain how the snow on the North Rim would impact the day. To find out whether it would be passable, I needed to run a marathon across from the South Rim to take a look. This is simply one of the classic ultra distance efforts trail runners are drawn to.

Thank you for taking time to share the interactions you have with fellow humans on the trail. I love your smile and the reminder that a hike is far more than the distance and time. Love this video. Will be doing my first Rim2Rim june 17th 2024 NK to BA with an overnight stay at Havasupai campground. Going to delve into more of your content!
I have a 50 mile race coming up. If my phone could get a signal the whole way I'd be playing your videos and imagining I'm running through beautiful mountains, and not on a flat, paved, urban trail.
Kerry- I absolutely loved this video! Specifically the part where you got emotional upon seeing the Colorado River (has happened to me several times at the Canyon as well), and the conversation with the park ranger... for some reason, I had the biggest smile on my face during that whole encounter. Your first R2R2R video actually inspired me to do my first R2R2R, which I did this past October (there's a video of it on my channel if you'd like to check it out!). Anyway, thanks for the inspiration, and for all the amazing content you provide!
@JBrunsAZ - I'm glad this video landed well with you. And it is so gratifying to know I had some influence on your decision to do the Canyon. Will check your video out.
"There's always another level of crazy." More truer words were never spoken! 😁
I love Della. Ive had the luxury of having 2 trailside chats with her. Great video.
How awesome that you've also chatted with her. Della is a great GC ambassador for sure.
Another super adventure and what a cool lady that ranger was. We live on such a beautiful planet
So pretty isn't it. And Della too!
Awesome work! Made me feel like I was there! (Except the trip would have taken me a bit longer. 😂)
Wow! You’re a bad-ass! Nice video!!
The stillness of this voyage. Phenomenal. You are a blessed individual. Great work.
I love the description as 'stillness'. You are right on.
I mean. You were moving the whole time. I love trails like that. It makes you realize how insignificant one's ego really is. A finite being in a infinite universe.
Nobody makes me feel like I am there as well as your videos do. But I hope Canada lets you back in after being in the US. 😀
This run was pre-Covid. But getting back into Canada is proving to be a bit of a trial these days, unfortunately.
We live in AZ, have been to the Grand Canyon many many times over the years. I have been so taken with the Grand Canyon I wrote a guide for the North and South Rim. But we have never been below the Rim to the Colorado River. To see your video is the ultimate video tour guide to be down into the canyon that I have seen so many times before. Thank you for doing the R2R2R and having the strength and fortitude to video that journey. This video is a Classic. Your emotion about the views and site of the GC is universally held. I have been to the Welcome Center, walked the 1/4 mile to the Rim at Mather Point and have seen the almost total silence that falls over people when get their first true in-person look at and into the Grand Canyon. People can not believe what they see. It almost looks unreal like some vast computer graphic panorama laid out before them. Stunned Silence is that universal reaction at First Sight. That stunned silence trying to take it all in...I have seen that countless times. If you have a Bucket List, put the Grand Canyon, at least the South Rim and hopefully the higher North Rim as something you should see before you die, at the top of your To Do list. You will never forget the views, the geology, the air, and if you are alone, the connection to our planet to you when you visit the Grand Canyon. One hint, from my book, you must...MUST...see the sunset from Grandview Point. Thank you again, Kerry. frederickfichman.com
I appreciate your comment very much, Frederick. And it pleases me SO much to know the video has had an impact on you in a positive way. I'm sure people will benefit from your passion and knowledge.
Another great video. Thanks 🙏
Another awesome video.. Thanks mate😊
another great trek and video Kerry!
Thoroughly enjoyable, great job Kerry!
Great adventure! Thanks for sharing 👍🏼
It's nice to see how appreciative you are of these journeys and we're appreciative that you share them with us!
So happy that it works like that. Living life gracefully.
thank you for your work brother!!! good stuff
I appreciate your adventures!! Thanks for the energy you put into the videos!
Another great vid, kerry - thanks for bringing us along! Fun to relive some of the scenery
WOW!!!!! Love it!!
Watch all of your videos, on the TV typically and no option to comment there. Just rewatching this while on laptop working on my own adventure video. I want to thank you for sharing all of your adventures it's amazing, motivating and education for a guy like me. Maybe see you on the trail sometime. FYI R2R2R in March 2022 😀
Awesome!!!
That was epic man
That park ranger tho!
Awesome video again! Glad you are back to running video post pandemic! Great company for my treadmill!
Thank you very much for your videos. I am planning a trip there this May of 2021 to do the same and it will be my first time. I appreciate your commentaries, videos and great tips. Happy, Safe Trails!
Hey! I love your videos I've watched a decent amount of your stuff. I live in Tempe I moved out here in 2019 mainly because I like to hike/trail run so much. I did R2R2R in October when the weather was ideal without snow. Would love to do a run/hike sometime! my R2R2R was about 12 hours so we are probably similar paces
"You wanna feel slightly cool" lol.....humor; on point! Kerry, this is an excellent video tour of the R3. I love the running commentary and I love that you're the caliber of trail runner and athlete, to get out and do this mid winter, in the snow and cold, loose traction at certain points, and just keep on cruising it. You are a true trail runner!
So glad you enjoyed it, my friend. It is a classic run for sure.
Doing this 7days from today. Fulltiltward you're one of my inspirations, next to Courtney Dauwalter and David Goggins
Thank You for doing what you do
@@TheHikingLion If you could note the conditions you found that would be awesome! Hoping to head down next weekend.
Hope your trip went well. And humbled to be in the company of Court and Goggs.
Another great video, this trip has been on my list for awhile, thanks for taking me along. fantastic... maybe Feb. would be a good time to go with less snow and before the march spring break? Thanks
Insane! Well done. Great talk with Della too.
Della was awesome.
Great video! Not surprised that the conditions were so much worse on the North rim. Love your gratitude! So many people take their health and mobility for granted. Wonderful to see you living your life to the fullest. See you out on the trail!
I hope so, Lesley. If we are not grateful for what life presents us, it is a true missed opportunity.
I lmao when you were slipping on the snow, that was a nice journey and I'm glad you've started uploading more of these adventures.
Hope you have many more to come.
Cheers Kerry. :)
Yes, there were some segments that were awkward in terms of footing. Winter is rolling the dice, but fun.
Oh man. I really feel snubbed you didnt film the top of the far rim! I was looking forward to see you hit the sign with the pole. Tag it properly! A bit OCD but man... :)
Kerry, fantastic video! The running team I'm a part of is planning to do the R2R2R after North Rim opens in May. Really enjoyed the detailed scenes you put in here-what a way to finish the last part of the run with some deer! I think it highlights quite a bit more than some of the other videos that I've seen.
It feels good to know that the content is useful. Thanks for the encouragement.
Hi kerry it never ceases to amazing what beautiful trails you go on their always such beautiful scenery. Where I live their is no trails it's a very built up and polluted. I need to drive 2 hrs out of the city to get a trail and fresh air . 🙂
It is worth the 2 hour drive, I"m sure. The more out of the way, I find, the more rewarding often.
Just take 2 Pair of YakTrax and you are good. It is truly the best time to go. Just don't plan on any services once you climb out on the North Rim prior to mid April.
Some crazies from Flagstaff and Boulder cross the Canyon from the South Rim to the North Rim with X country skis on their backpacks and once on top at the North Rim ski to the lodge at Jacobs Lake. Now THERE is an adventure !
That would be a solid fun adventure, true.
Great video! You make it look easy, I know it’s far from it! Makes me want to go back
I've been there several times and do not regret returning at all. Although, I've done some other GC adventures lately that are perhaps even more spectacular.
Would love to do this one day. Great video
You should!
Well let me tell ya those sneaky little squirrels have found a was to get into your pack Despite using those pack polls I now have a Souvenir hole from my experience when we stayed down at Phantom Ranch when we hiked it lol
I really enjoyed this video! I would love to do the rim to rim to rim one day soon! I'll record a video and post it to my channel too :-) Watching your video gets me excited to do run it soon!
Oh, I also watched your first rim to rim to rim video. You can tell the camera recording is better in this one but I still enjoyed both!
Thanks for sharing Kerry! Where and How far away did you park from trailhead ?
Nice 👍 I’ve run RRR a number of times - never in winter. Crazy going thru that snow 😀🏃♂️🏃♂️
(Hint: for those stopping at the ranch and mailing in the leather mailbag the mule carry you have to buy/use one of their postcards to get phantom ranch post mark otherwise it’ll be postmarked in Phoenix 🤪)
Good tip. I have never stopped to mail anything from there. But I've seen it is a thing. Classic route.
I see your GAA jersey. There are a few Wards in county Kerry for sure!
I will have to make a pilgrimage one day.
love your videos kerry! can you tell me exactly what time of year you did this? the weather looks perfect
I think it was February.
Watching this as I am about to go out on a trail run here in Lofoten, Norway. Not as far as your run, but it is steap! Also, you should check out the dji osmo pocket. Not as sturdy as Gopro but the stabilisation is top notch!
Roy, the Osmo would get hammered I think. I need something with brick-like toughness. I've got family in Norway up around Alta. There is incredible running there. And yes, steep, like it is often here in British Columbia, too.
@@FullTiltWard Sure, it needs to be handled with care. I haver used it for over a year and I am happy with it. Not happy with battery life... Oh cool! So you have been to Norway?
As a proud Dublin man, I'm offended by your wearing of a Co. Kerry GAA jersey! 😀
Keep up the good work sir!
As a proud Kerry man, I have to rock the Kerry GAA jersey. I'd also wear the Dublin one, truth be told. Cheers David.
How do you handle the water replenishment during off-season? I don't want to haul 2 gallons of water like I did for the Half Dome. I'm starting to research blogs but I wonder your opinion and experience about that.
Like at 22:06 the water is shut off. Would I go down to the actual river and use a Katadyn Befree or something? I thought about that next time I do the Half Dome so I can refill at the Merced River on the top of Mist Trail.
I've found there to be reasonable water available all three times I've gone - though I still carry more than I need. If you have a filter, or treatment tablets, you should be fine.
@@FullTiltWard So the faucets weren't dry at all of the stop points?
I also did a snow run this morning, but my video is of much less quality (you can still watch it though) 😉👍
Snow running is the best.
When is the 400 mile Australian and is there a website? Kerry, anyone?
Not sure on this one.
If you haven't seen the video of Walmsley's Grand Canyon descent that Park Ranger Della mentioned, it's really something extraordinary. czcams.com/video/OPm_AGwnxdQ/video.html
Watched it. Jamil cruising behind him on the way down. Moving with velocity in his backyard, Jim is impressive.
43:48 that "guy from Flagstaff" chasing Walmsley was probably Jam Jam: czcams.com/video/OPm_AGwnxdQ/video.html
I believe you may be correct, @csaba
Bro. Just release it already lol
LOL. I know, right? Will look forward to getting together with folks tomorrow for this one.
@@KerryWard r2r2r is in my bucket list. Ever since your first video. I appreciate what you do man. Catch this tomorrow.
Hope you enjoyed it when it FINALLY opened up.
