- Rim2Rim2Rim - Kim Levinsky, April 15, 2021 (solo, complete loop)
I started at 4am on Thursday April 15, 2021 by parking at the South Rim Market. From there, I ran to the Bright Angel Trailhead and down the BA Trail. After running across The Box, I ran up the North Kaibab Trail to the North Rim. Then I ran back across The Box and took the South Kaibab Trail up. Once I got out of the canyon, I ran back to my car at the South Rim Market. Final Stats: 54 miles and 12,200 ft gain and 12,200 ft loss. 17 hours and 55 minutes.
This is probably my favorite video of someone doing the R2R2R. You’re so happy and positive. I’d be crying on the way down
:-) thank you- it was hard but I really had a great time!
I stumbled across this video after researching Grand Canyon hiking. I had no idea people were doing Rim to Rim to Rim and I was in absolute awe. Fast forward and now I completed a R2R2R hike in under 24 hours, thanks for the inspiration 💪👊
No way!! that is amazing! Congrats on R3!!
Update, 2nd r2r2r hike in 20hrs, started running last year, have done a few 50k, a 100k, r2r2r in 16 hrs and am over 50. I will always look back at this video as the one that helped me realize my mind was limiting me way more than my body. I cannot thank you enough for putting it out there and being so can-do positive. 🫵👏🤝
Wow, you are a fantastic athlete and joy to follow! I first hiked the canyon 50 years ago, and did a rim to river to rim day hike on my 65th birthday five years ago. You ultra runners amaze me - wish they were all as polite as you. Way to go, girl!
thank you!!
Too much work, I get tired just watching. I'll take this off my bucket list, thanks for the warning. Driving straight to the mall and walk to the food court is good enough for me.
Thanks for your kind words!
This is incredible. I'm not a runner, but I love hiking/backpacking. The most I've ever hiked in 1 day was right at 20 miles with 4k ft. elevation change, and I was worn out. Can't imagine how much training it takes to get to your level.
Thanks for your kind words!
what a hike ! wow , well done !
Thanks!
Excellent video. What an adventure!
Your amazing and this is one the best videos I've watched hands down! Great narrator and attitude! Thank you
Thanks for the kind words!
How did you keep so positive? When I completed this the first time the last 2 miles I was crying like a baby because I really thought I wasn't going to make it. People don't have any idea how truly hard this run (walk) is, until they suffer through. Great video, and congratulations.
I just couldn't get over the trail beauty around me. And I think going out there after not being able to travel for a year - there was a lot of gratitude. I really did have a ton of fun! You are so right - it is TOUGH!!
@@kimlevinsky as a tip, you need to drink straight from every river you encounter. And every reasonably clean lake. And every stretch of ocean, a couple small sips. To have an iron belly. That's what I do , and now I drink nearly any water source with total impunity. It's great. I also drink from ponds if they aren't too nasty.
@@sasquatchrosefarts your account name gives me complete confidence in your advice 🤢
That was my thought too. She was laughing at the trail the whole way. It impressed me.
@@calimon00 What do I know. I only grew an inch taller and put on 100 pounds in four years in my thirties. And healed every injury I ever had. And I'm only a super athlete. Ignore what I say. Sterilize everything and pretend you don't need gut Flora and pretend rivers and creeks don't have Flora to enhance digestion ...and give you superpowers for healing and growth.
Well done! Great run, great story.
Amazing. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for your kind words!
Amazing video, so well done! Enjoyed it so much!
Just subscribed! What a cool run! Hoping to run this one day soon. Also, I love your happiness and joy throughout this video, despite the journey being hard.
You are amazing. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you!
Awesome! Hats off to you!!
Thanks for your kind words!
Awesome congratulations. Love all this. Thank you thank you thank you for sharing
Thanks so much for sharing. What an achievement! Love your energy. I’m doing this trip later this week. Appreciate the inspiration and info!
thank you! I hope you had fun!
The plant was the Spanish Bayonet, dagger yucca.
Just saw another video of hikers who passed out dehydrated and exhausted. Very smart in starting very early.
I believe it's a century plant, also known as Utah yucca.
Oh yikes! Thankfull the heat wasn't unbearable, but I am glad I got an early start!
What an amazing accomplishment!! I've hiked it twice, but not the entire hike in a day. I was a little bit older (upper 50's and early 60's), but I survived and really enjoyed it!! 😉
So cool - the GC is a special place!
You are amazing!! I hiked south kiabab to phantom then up bright angel. It was amazing and I was spent! Hoping to do it again this year. You are an inspiration and encouragement to us! Keep it up! You are awesome!! Not enough adjectives to describe how amazing you are!! You are gifted and are a gift to all of us!
thanks for the kind words!
Incredible video! Love your outlook!
Thank you!
Congratulations! I enjoyed this immensely! I backpacked rim to rim 20 years ago and it was a lifetime memory!
Thanks for your kind words! The GC is such a special place!
Beautiful. Awesome job🎉🎉🎉🎉
Thanks you!
Kim, you are a bad ass! Super impressed.
This is unreal! Amazing video.
Thanks for your kind words!
I have no idea why you showed up on my feed but what a gorgeous landscape. Thanks and nice job!
Loved this video! I found it after doing my Rim to Rim hike and looking for videos to show friends what it is like. I'm in awe of you guys that do R2R2R! Amazing accomplishment! Your attitude and love for the trail and the activity are really infectious, so I went to check out your other videos and see that you are in the middle of Tahoe 200 as we speak! Cheering you on from across the internet. You're 109 in as I type - you got this!
Thank you so much for this! Wow! Really appreciate you taking the time to reach out and for the encouragement :)
So awesome! Congratulations! Thank you for taking us along.
Thank you!
This so wonderful! Your video reminded me of my trip/hike to Grand Canyon. Greatly appreciate you!
Thanks for your note!
I really enjoyed this video. It is different and yet familiar. I enjoyed the commentary and the views. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much for sharing your awesome accomplishment! It was truly enjoyable seeing the trails and also seeing how well you planned and endurance trained, for the challenges of the trails. It was great to go along with you!
Thanks for your kind words!
Girl you rock! I subscribed!
Great video and a great accomplishment for a day's hike. congratulations!
Thanks!
Great video! Thanks for the share!
Thanks for your kind words!
Wow, respect! Amazing hike the Rim to Rim to Rim 👌💪🏻
Thanks!
congratulations! what an amazing accomplishment! You go girl! Happened to just run across your video by accident and while I am not a runner nor a walker, your video was utterly captivating. Thank you for sharing it.
Thank you for your kind note!!
Great video! Really enjoyed it! The best part for me is that you managed to keep your smiling, pleasant demeanor all the way to the end!
Thanks for your kind words, James!
So cool! I've been dreaming of this for years and planning yoga hiking retreat this Nov. A few friends will add the R2R2R during that retreat. Thank you soooooo much for making this. I'll be sharing it with my retreat friends!
Thanks for your kind words! I hope your retreat goes well!
I just love that you took the time to respond to people’s questions. I’m impressed. I loved your video. I hate running, but I love watching all of you super-athletes! Thx for the awesome uplifting video!
Running is dumb!! ;-) Thanks for your kind words!
Well done, Kim!! Thank you for sharing. Best wishes for all future endeavors. ❤
thanks for the kind words!
Your positivity and spirit of gratitude is spectacular! Congrats on a truly Amazing accomplishment and experience, and thank you for the video!
Thanks for your kind words!
Just stunning.
it was so beautiful!
Epic Run...Hope to do it myself in about a year. I will be adjusting my expectations. Congrats on the massive accomplishment
Thank you! Good luck when get ou there!
I live in PA, just over the NJ/PA border and your training comment about Mt. Tammany is spot on!! It's my favorite kind of hell!!!
Love Tammany!!
You are incredible 🙏❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thanks for your kind words!
Very impressive accomplishment!
thank you!
Congratulations!!! I did it 3 years ago and plan on doing it again next year. Great video!
Awesome! Thank you!
That’s amazing! I did r2r2r over 2 days this October, 22h trail time. It’s a beast, for sure. Doing it in 1 day is impressive!
No matter how long it takes - it’s an incredible experience!
WOW Impressive... i loved your spirit and constant smile on the face ..even after 54 miles ... kudos to you , hopefully i will attempt the same next year
Thank you! YOU CAN DO IT!!
Congrats on completing! Really enjoyed your video and your commentary was so well done. I’m planning on doing this in early March with some of my buddies here in Colorado Springs. We’re all about double your age so wish us luck! 👊
Thanks for the kind words! You’re gonna love R3. Have fun! I’m going back in April to do it again!
So glad I found this video. Doing R2R first week of October and nervous about the water situation. Hope to see you at the Squatchayanda for last long training hike
How did it go??!
What a stunning testament to the persistence, will, and strength of the human spirit. This was an inspiring presentation of your journey, skill, and passion!
Thank you so much for the kind words!
At 22:38 you basically speak out my thoughts 'Pfff ... Wow ....'. This is an amazing accomplishment. Thanks for the footage and the great scenic views. Brings back memories of my trip (with my kids) to the Grand Canyon in july 2019. We only did hike part of the South Kaibab trail because it was way too hot. And we were not trained in hiking with elevation (living in the Netherlands which highest point in the whole country is just 100 ft above sea level) . I've seen a lot of rim2rim hikes. But a rim2rim2rim hike done in this way is simply unbelievable...
Thank you so much for your kind words, Paul!!
Wow!! You're awesome!
Thanks for your kind words!
Great! I loved watching your demeanor mostly stay the same throughout. And I appreciate that you didn't skip huge swaths of mileage in the video. That steady ticking off of the miles made this much better than most who try to document the trip. I am inspired to do the simpler rim to river to rim, if that's what you call it. Your shoutouts and talk about water and supplements along the way were helpful too. All the best.
Thanks so much for your kind words! I had fun making the video and I'm glad it's helping a lot of people who are going to do their own runventure!
Respect!
Thanks!
You rock keep it up!
Thank you!
You are A: Crazy and B: An animal!!! Totally impressed.
Giddy up!
Congratulations 🎉 what you did is so impressive. Many thanks for sharing this vdo.
thank you!
Wow amazing 😮 👏
Thanks 😄
Amazing; two big thumbs up to you👍👍😎😎😎⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thank you!
You are a Beast!!!
:) Thanks!
I did South Kiabab to Bright Angel in May and it was brutal. I used up all my salt tablets and ran out of electrolytes.
But the Rangers helped me out and fellow hikers. Next year I'll do the North Kiabab to South Kaibab!
Nice video and you are a beast!
The rangers were so awesome! They offered me electrolytes too. Congrats on your Rim2Rim!!
Wow , great effort.
Thank you!
Very impressive
Thanks!
Just hiked this r2r2r with my 8 and 6yr old daughters. Completed in 12 hours
Surely you mean Rim/River/Rim! R2R2R is 42 to 48 miles!
Great run from another East coaster! I’m heading out there this coming October.
You're gonna LOVE it!! Have fun!
Lady, you are stud!
Thanks for your kind words!
Impressive accomplishment, your in great condition.
Safe travels
Thanks for your kind words!
Absolutely beautiful!! If you go back, I’m coming with you!
Excellent video, great run! You're the kind of positive person who is so good to see on the trail.
I've backpacked a lot in GCNP but never been to the North side (except to Phantom Ranch). Thinking about a R2R soon but I'm 60, so no R2R2R for me. One hangup is accommodations on the North Rim -- hard to come by normally and harder with COVID. I wonder if any of the shuttle services would deliver a duffel bag from the South to the North so I could send my heavy pack ahead.
Thank you, Keith! Hmm I'm not sure about the shuttle service - That would be super nice if they could transport your stuff!!
Epic Kim! Love your 'tude and commentary the whole time. "...they looked like the walking dead." LOL...so true! Train people! Train harder than you think you could possibly need, cross-train on a mountain bike, and don't let up!! Getting in all the creeks is absolutely crucial. Keep your core temps low!! You're a beast Kim! AWESOME JOB!
Thank you Todd!!
]p
Congrats on the accomplishment! Great video! Doing my first 125km run this summer, this one is on my bucket list! I assume the comments about women hiking alone are based on some people’s own fears. And for the comments that ‘a lot of men couldn’t do it would be accurate. Personally I think anyone could, but 99.9% won’t. Zero difference between men & women when it comes to challenges like this.It speaks to your motivation & discipline. Again, well done!
I agree with you on this. I felt completely safe the entire time. I do most of my long ultra runs solo, so I've got the "this is sketchy radar" pretty fine-tuned! Thanks for your encouraging note!
Beast
Hi Kim,to put it into prospective, you did nine central parks, but with much, much, more ups ahd down's and all arounds.Congratulations great accomplishment...
That's a lot of central parks!! ;-)
Wow, that was impressive! My legs are fatigued after watching this
:) thanks!
I worked at south rim general store for a year and a half .... you never get tired of the view. Pictures and video, do not do it justice.
agreed!
My wife and I have done the rim to rim twice. We were impressed that you did the rim to rim to rim. Unless you have done this hike its just impossible to explain to anyone else what you see and experience along the way. The lines on the wall of the canyon read like a time travelers guide. Great video.
Doing the Rim to Rim twice doesn't count as doing the R2R2R ;)
@@RubiHammer yes it does if you walk backwards
@@JTW2901 Then how do you count doing the Rim tp River to Rim in the South Rim in half a day, then driving to the North Rim, and finishing with the North Rim to the South Rim and back to the North Rim (single day R2R2R), all of that within three days ;)
@@RubiHammer rubi read the original post I made. It does not say or imply we did R2R2R. It’s says we are blown away on her accomplishment of doing that. It said we only did R2R twice.
@@JTW2901 I noticed it . Just teasing you man. Great job :)
I did R2R in a day, but I don't know if R2R2R will ever be possible. I love the canyon. Great job!
Anything is possible, my friend 👍🏽💪🏽 just gotta eat the elephant one bite at a time!
With some training and lot of planning, it could be possible!
Hi Kim, what an awesome accomplishment and you stayed so positive through it all, even when you had to hoof it back to your car, which took a little bit of time (17:11 coming out of the ditch to 17:54 when you made it to your car...I would have been crying like a baby or curled up in a fetal position waiting for someone to feel sorry for me!) I can say that because that is how I was feeling when I finished the R2R2R a couple years ago. It's been almost a year since your R2R2R, any plans on going back and doing it again...to get the lemonade! If so, you need to make another recording of your trek to keep other folks who are thinking of doing the ditch inspired! Strong work Kim!
Thanks for the kind note! I would go back again -- it was an incredible experience. And yes, I need to get the lemonade!! Thanks again for your notes!
Really excellent video and really great hiking/running! I've done the R2R2R twice, but with the intent of finishing in under 24 hours, so no running. Alas my first try, in 1981, SK-NK-BA, took 30 hours. [But, I walked from the North Kaibab trailhead to the Grand Canyon lodge and bought lunch and then fell asleep for an hour in the Sun Room! :-) ] My second try was two years later from the North Rim - NK-SK-BA-NK where I had a friend pick me up at the South Kaibab trailhead, run me by Yavapai to grab a quick bite for dinner and then dropped me off at the BA. That one took 26 hours. [I took a 4 hour nap on a rock just before Cottonwood Campground at about midnight.] By the way, the San Francisco Peaks (at Flagstaff) are barely visible in the background of your pictures/video from the Coconino Overlook. Congrats!!
This is so cool! Thank you for sharing! :)
You rock super positive ❤
thanks for the kind words!
This is the scariest movie I’ve ever seen!
15:37 is so protected!
Oh my gosh great job!! I came across your channel while searching for my rim to rim this May, 2022. I’m hiking not running and heading from Bright Angel on the South rim and up North Kabab. Again, nice job! Any tips are appreciated. Safe and Happy trails
Thanks for your note! I hope your R2R is awesome!!!
oh no those spoilers at 24:30 :(
congrats on R3! awesome effort
little did I know... :) ha!
Amazing!! Great effort Kim, I'm totally surprised at what you can achieve in one looooong day LOL :) Alex, Keep well, text and talk soon :) P.s Be safe in these times :)
WOW, these long-distance replies take time LOL :)
Amazing adventure Kim, thank you for sharing. I'll scout out Tahoe for you in July (but I'm not running it!) I enjoyed the North Rim over the South but it's all amazing!
Excellent! Thank you!!
Most people doing this: Crying, shaking, almost collapsing and nearly not making it the last miles
Her: Cheerfully flying up and down that trail, enjoying it
It was an unforgettable experience!!
What a great video. I've been from the SK trailhead to Ribbon Falls and then back up the BA (over 2 days). I know how hard that was. I am always super-impressed at those that can do a R2R, let alone a R3. I was chuckling as I was watching because I knew the SK was going to kick butt. In hindsight wouldn't you maybe have gone down SK and up BA (more water sources, less gradient)? Pretty cool though and you should be proud of your accomplishment.
absolutely should have gone down SK and back up BA! :-) Next time!
Loved your video and congratulations!! I am new to GoPro and my husband and I are doing R2R in late September. What did you use to hold your GoPro? How many batteries did you use? Did you record the whole time or just the spots we see on your video? Anything you wish you would have know before your trek? Thanks for sharing your journey!! Super helpful!!
Hi Kim! I used "The Handler" www.amazon.com/Handler-Floating-Hand-Grip-Accessory/dp/B08F2YNTQR/ref=pd_lpo_421_t_1/138-0682203-8906816?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B08F2YNTQR&pd_rd_r=a5fd3c16-e844-49ff-805d-7f3dfd2bbf27&pd_rd_w=XsOoa&pd_rd_wg=OiWpV&pf_rd_p=a0d6e967-6561-454c-84f8-2ce2c92b79a6&pf_rd_r=2JGNKTY8DMRY3A5M1YGW&psc=1&refRID=2JGNKTY8DMRY3A5M1YGW
I had 2 batteries
I turned the GoPro on/off each time I used it to save the battery.
Hope that helps!!
The plant you asked about was a yucca. My parents planted one outside my bedroom window when I was a kid.
Thank you!
Hoping to do rim to rim to rim next summer.Hiked the route with a backpack and heavy camera, staying at the North rim for a couple of days in between last time. Each direction took about 10 hours with lots of stopping for photos.Traveling light and running it at a sensible pace should take a large chunk of time out of that.Walking the inclines is the sensible option.👍
Awesome, Michael! Have fun!!
I did it this August.Made harder work of it than I needed to,due to poor fitting shoes.
uh may zing. I'd like to do 2r2r, but I'd be on the 5 day plan. Excellent video, picture, and presentation, but I'm missing the board game. Do not even think about a 4k piece GC puzzle.
thanks for taking us along. would you be so kind to list some or all the things you used and mentioned in the video? How much foods/snacks you packed and the weight/calories? also what is the trail map and watch model (:
Hi Mark! I don't have exact quantities, but I remember packing: bobo bars, trail mix, spring energy gels, lara bars, turkey sandwich, tailwind... I used the Avenza map and downloaded the free "Grand Canyon Hiking Map" by US National Park Service... my watch was a COROS Pace and has since been updated to COROS Apex. Hope that helps!
Awesome vid. Thanks for sharing. Im planning on doing this same hike in a few weeks and i had a couple of questions. How much did your pack weigh? How many calories did you pack? Do you think the weight of packing a mirrorless camera would make it significantly more difficult? Any last minute advice before i embark on the hike? Thanks again.
Hi there, my pack weighed about 12-13 pounds. I don't have a saved list of all the food that I packed, but I know that I didn't pack enough. I wish I had packed a few pb&js and turkey sandwiches. I was tired of bars by the end of the dady... I'm not sure how much a mirrorless camera weighs so I can't speak to that! Enjoy every step and if you're going when it's super hot, take a minute at each water access spot (creeks and spigots) to soak your head; it helps with the heat!
Wow! Great accomplishment, and great video work as well! A Rim2Rim2Rim is one of the more ambitious items on my bucket list. Hope to get it done before I get too much older! 🤣 Can I ask what model of GoPro you are using?
Hi - it is a GoPro 9!
What an awesome job you did!!! I am planning to do this also in May. What sort of training did you do to prepare for this? Are you a runner?
Thanks, Eric! Yes, I'm an ultrarunner. I was training for the Tahoe 200 mile race when I did R2R2R. So lots of long runs, long hikes and heavy strength training!
What an amazing video... Inspiring! But seriously, how do you train for something like this? I would love to do something like this but afraid my body can't cope and will fail.
Thanks for your kind words! I run ultras pretty much year round, so it's a lot of back-to-back runs. I'm training for the Tahoe200 right now, so I've been focusing on a lot of hiking to get good vertical. I think if you're prepared to suffer and have the endurance to be out there for a day, you can do it!
Hi Kim, loved this !! Congratulations! Thanks for sharing . What is the name of the APP that has all the maps/trail head info?
Thanks! The app is called Avenza!
