This is not an easy tune to play on the fiddle .. and yet the magnificent JH here, as per all of the great musical legends in history, makes it look & sound so damned easy. A beautiful rendition of this famous old-time tune here by JH. Fans should also access Mark O'Connor's second-ever album, "Pickin In The Wind", from way back in 1975 .. for an equally fine version of the same tune. John Hartford, by the way, was a key contributing musician (banjo) on that fabulous album.
I really like John Hartford and am old enough to remember watching him on tv when I was a kid...I think the concert movie "Down from the Mountain" was filmed not too long before he passed away ...
Man, I'd give my soul to play like that...but then I wouldn't be able to Meet ol' John the riverboat captain on the big muddy in the sky....well I guess I'd give my right nut instead..... Reminds me of those cool nights when J.H. played at Mole lake's Great Northern Bluegrass Fest....best times of my life to this day.
Luke Thomasson. Father of incredible fiddler Benny Thomasson. Benny inspired dozens of incredible fiddlers from Terry/Dale Morris, Texas Shorty, Mark O’Connor to current prodigies like Mia Orasco, Ridge Roberts, many others.
I can’t watch John without getting a little misty. I sure do miss him and his library of fiddle tunes.
Outstanding, truly outstanding 👍👍👍
Possibly the most talented performer I have ever seen or heard. Fiddle, banjo, songwriting, singing, storytelling, all expertly!
Guitar player, terrific artist, dancer, calligrapher, and certified riverboat pilot. John could do anything.
He performed at a college back in the later 70s and was fortunate enough to attend. And perform he did! ❤
if there is a second time around i hope john and i are sharing watches at the wheel and trading off tunes like we did years ago
A true American treasure to traditional music, we will always miss you! RIP
Stunning. Everything John Hartford does sounds like John Hartford and is equally true to the traditions of the music. :)
That says it exactly.

My favorite fiddle player. I never heard enough from him.
My heart beats in 3/4
John Hartford has been an inspiration to fiddle players for so long... wonderful.

The great Texas old-time fiddler Benny Tholmasson, or maybe some say by his father Luke. Benny was perhaps most famous as Mark O'Connor's mentor.
Benny’s father wrote Midnight on the Water and no one ever played it better than Benny.
The name is "Midnight on the Water."
my orchestra is playing that soon... too bad i cant to that too well on the cello without large amounts of shifting...
I know this is old, but try tuning your cello to deadman's tuning. GGDG, and play the tune in g
And if you want to play it in D, ADDA would probably work
i work on the river and play my fiddle to pass the time
any idea who wrote this song
