There's people talking about a decline of the west and how Rand predicted it. I'm curious: what do they mean by decline, what are they actually talking about?
I'm aware the world is not perfect or even great by any means, and neither are the western countries we (probably) live in, but I don't see how things have ever been "better" if we want to speak in a general and qualitative way, though I'm not a fan of this manner of speaking. Just the fact that I can read and write, and in more than one language, without being noble or even wealthy, is something that wasn't possible for most people even 70 or 80 years ago. If the west is declining what is it declining from? When has the life of the average man ever been easier and relatively full of opportunities?

It's declining philosophically which will translate into decline in material terms. But the effect is not immediate.

I think the west is declining because many people don’t feel the way you do-most people aren’t in search of all of the knowledge that is available to them. The western mind is closing.

So what if all the businesses shut down tomorrow? That would be a devaluing of assets if they were not to reopen. Essentially Scenario a) the government would go to middle managers give them loans to restart the businesses and confiscate the assets of the business leaders who closed down the old businesses for political pressures. Scenario B) Quid pro quo bargin with them. Subsidise for contributions. The old fashioned way to embezzle.

I feel sorry for people who need to justify their lack of empathy. Ayn Rand was a very superficial "philospher".

Have to resoectfully disagree. Nobody has as clear a vision as AynRand. If you are in any way a Statist then you will not like her vision and that is OK. But surely you can see the sharp decline in the West both economically and morally is a result of the Statist mindset not the objectivist mindset?

@@joepaluka9031 Honestly, no I cannot. First of all, morals are SUBJECTIVE....not objective. So I am at a loss in understanding your subjective opinion that there has been a "sharp decline in the West both economically and morally". Also, I have no idea what a Statist is. Do you mean Stalinist? Like a Communist? Since I'm going for honesty here, I consider myself a Democratic Solialist Progressive fucking punk rocker. I don't want to live anywhere near Ayn Rand's "Utopia"...so I also disagree with your opinion that "Nobody has as clear a vision as Ayn Rand". Ayn Rand was a total C U Next Tuesday.

I've typed this out before on this channel, and will do so again: Rand was a loathsome human being, a callow thinker, and a hack writer. Her "philosophy" (essentially a rationalization of selfishness and greed) hardly deserves to be called such.

This is a really bad summary of Atlas and you read stuff into it that isn't there. That's the problem with most people who review Rand they bring their pre conceived notions into a book that are not there.
