Would we call a writer from Texas, a Texan or American writer? What if Texas secedes from USA in future? Should there be any controversy about him then or should both be happy to call him theirs?
Russia and Ukraine, both have a rightful claim to Gogol. The problem is Ukraine wants to cut off its Russian heritage and disown Russian language. Why, then, should they accept Gogol?

We often see the world as we are, rather than what it is. Human beings are tribal creatures, but the value of a work of literature supercedes such consideration. And war encourages tribes in conflict to behave like dogs fighting over a bone. But Gogol is not a bone, but a man. A man who had to leave his birthplace to find worldly success. A divided self is commonplace in people who have to leave their birthplace to find worldly success. They adapt to and flourish in the new soil they find themselves planted, but the dust of the old still remains in their pores, and fertilisers the new. It drives his need to grow. Ukraine made Gogol a writer, but his art only acquired fame when he wrote for his new audience, in urban Russia. So in this one man, the two dimensions are in spirit, indivisible in the man and his work. He is only famous beyond them, because he touched on universal themes, that make sense beyond Russia and Ukraine. So, enjoy the fruits of his seeding and his flourishing, and respect them both, as he is a hybrid.
This is a great point, not to mention Texas being the Lone star state, and culturally being a little bit different from the rest of USA, as far as I know
Maybe that hypothetical writer could be considered both Texan and American. The maker of this video has pointed out that he is primarily referring to language and not to nationality, ethnicity, or passports and citizenship.

Gogol was ethnically Ukrainian but was born a subject of imperial Russia, and composed in the Russian language.
You will be surprised how many of us Russian citizens are ethnically Ukrainians, yet couldn't care less. Everyone in Russia has a grandmother from Ukraine. What I mean, is that ethnicity in the current situation is mostly a political thing, doesn't have much to do with genes.

as Ukrainian, I consider a Gogol as a Russian author of Ukrainian origin. He wrote in Russian and that is what matters. Ukrainian literature has lots of great authors who lived in the same time or earlier with Gogol and wrote in own language and were`nt considering russian empire as their motherland
as Ukrainian, you should know WHY he used to write in russian, and it doesn`t matter that much in this case, to consider him as russian writer

Funnily, hardly Ukranian and Russian were different nationalities back then.
I have come to believe that the simplest and most sensible means to categorize literature is by the language in which the literature is written. Hence, Joyce's 'A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man' is a work of English literature, the original text of Beckett's 'En attendant Godot' is a specimen of French literature, and Gogol's 'Dead Souls' is a masterpiece of Russian literature.
Except he had no choice but to write in russian if he didn't want to end up in Siberia. Gogol commented on how he regretted not knowing Ukrainian well-enough.
I don't understand the lack of reality and people being so fragile in this day and age.

People back then both in little Russia and great Russia (Velikorossiya) called themselves Russian.
Little Russia was just a region. So gogol did consider himself Russian and also a little Russian

Aren't you supposed to be long underground, Queen Catherine "The Great"? Nobody but the kremlin called Ukrainians "malorussians". Besides, it's a term that was taken from greek that described the center of Ancient Rus, therefore "small".
I live in Norway, we got both Russians and Ukrainians here, and it is almost impossible to tell the difference, Ukrainians tend to be a little darker but that is it. They got same language (yes they both speak russian), same religion, same culture. So before we can say if Gogol is Ukrainian or Russian we need to first find the difference between the 2, which is hard because there are almost none.
Ukrainians speak ukrainian language. But its true that there is a big amount of people who speaks russian because of cultural occupation. But it's not our national language. Of course it could be hard for you tell the difference, because you don't know this languages. Also, Russians don't understand ukrainian language.
and of course Ukrainians have different culture, but Russia tries to destroy it and impose their throughot history

There was never an imperial conquest of Ukraine by Russia
The territories that today constitute the country of Ukraine war ethnically Russian for more than 1000 years . Ukraine is a name of a regional separatist movement (among couple of dozens of professors with Polish roots) of the late 19th beginning of the 20th century, not ethnicity
Could be said about many countries, in this day and age, Russia should just look after their own, and leave Ukraine, to rule themselves. Ukrainians are different to Russians, and hopefully without Russian influence, will get rid of their Soviet influence, and be themselves.

I know in Ukraine, the issue of Gogol's nationality is a hotly debated topic, yet his literature is still widely beloved regardless of that fact. I feel it shows, in some ways, that literature touches all of us, despite the author's nationality being questionable. Great video.
One thing is where he was born. Another thing is where he lived, what inspired him and what landscape he described.

fun fact: pre-revolution Russian encyclopedia "Brockhaus and Efron Encyclopaedic Dictionary" names Gogol as Little Russia's(i.e. Ukrainian) nationalist(volume 68, p.635 in Russian edition)

I was trying to write a trite response about banning American Literature in response to your trolls. Then looked through my library - I have a lot of American books on History, Economics, Philosophy and Social Commentary. But only five authors who have written novels and one of those is Ayn Rand who was born in Russia, whom I dislike personally but enjoyed two of her novels. So please can you help me come to grips with American novelists. Love your work👍🤍

Well that's BS, the reason all those countries speak Russian, was because their own language was prohibited. Not by choice! And Russian is in no way superior to any other language, in fact lots of so called Russian authors etc were Ukrainian.

Including Solzhenitsyn, Pushkin and Brodsky among them. You may not familiar with their other side. Solzhenitsyn for example in his essay Rebuilding Russia in 1990 has been pointing out that Russia should “return” in his domain other soviet republics, and among them ukraine. Because he did not see ukrainians as independent people, and Putin actually met with him personally, on the matters of his essay. Read Brodsky’s writing called On independence of Ukraine. It is agressive and imperialistic tone. Pushkin has several poems with the same aggressive and imperialistic tone. You need to prepare better my friend, before diving deep with this conclusions. Gogol wrote in Russian because Russian was his native language
What today is called Ukrainian didn’t even exist back then as a language. The closest thing to the Ukrainian language that existed back then was there a local rural dialect, though it was much closer to their mother in Russian than to today’s Ukrainian language. The Russian nobility spoke the classic Russian language which became modern Russian language
People in the west make assumptions based on their limited knowledge of Russia Ukraine and it’s complicated history/language and are very susceptible to today’s political Ukrainian propaganda
I write it not because I have a bias because I am Russian, but because I’m always very triggered by lies that then confuse people in the west like you

Modern Ukrainian language comes from Galicia, and is a mixture of Russian and Polish.
if you read scientific articles and real research on this topic, you would know that what you wrote is misinformation, which is simply convenient to use to emphasize the false greatness of russia. btw, the date of creation of the language does not apply to the topic of the video at all. i also recommend you to read what measures the empire of that time used to literally destroy the Ukrainian language as such, and it was simply impossible to write in Ukrainian for an incredibly long time in order to SURVIVE and to be a writer, who want to have, conditionally, money for a living. i recommend checking the veracity of the information before writing bullshit in the comments 😊

Russian literature and language are used as part of this war. That’s the problem with the original video - it could have said ‘Russian-speaking’ but it didn’t. It perpetuates this grandomaniac version of Russian culture which supposedly gives them the permission to commit genocides. The amount of not simply pro-Russian comments but clearly anti-Ukrainian under the original video shows you that art cannot be separated from politics, it’s part of it. Gogol couldn't write in ukrainian because everyone who wrote in ukrainian were prosecuted. This video could be much more interesting if it discussed how russian imperialism effected literature in countries that were colonized. Gogol considered himself ukrainian but being in russian impere destroyed him.
