How to Travel Around the World For Months With No Checked Luggage

  • Here's how I travel with only a carry-on bag and a personal item bag for months at a time. This saves me hundreds of dollars in checked luggage fees, and prevents airlines from losing my luggage. It also saves me time by not having to wait at baggage claim upon arrival, and removes the risk of someone stealing my luggage there. And of course it's also just lighter and takes up less space, which makes traveling easier.
    The key pieces of equipment shown here are the Osprey Farpoint 40 Backpack (weighing in at 6 kg/13.2 lbs fully packed) , as well as the 4Monster 16L Hiking Daypack (weighing in at 3.4 kg/7.5 lbs at full capacity). I am sponsored by nobody.

    You can fall into a lot of issues for having a mixed bottle of pills like that. I spent a lot of time in the airport in Vienna because of a mixed bottle of Advil and antihistamines.

      Oooh... I didn't think of that. I haven't had any problems but that doesn't mean that I won't in the future and clearly this happened to you. I guess I need to separate out my three types of over-the-counter pills I carry into three individual medicine bottles.. Thank you for letting me know about this.

      I removed that part of the video where I recommend this. Folks, don't combine medications in one bottle. Make sure each medication is in its original package and properly labeled. Thank you again for calling attention to this. You may have saved a lot of people from some big hassles, including myself!

      Cipro saved me from turning around a full Kenya Airways 747! That and the 2 litre water bottle the FA brought me! I was never so thankful to be horizontal in NYC hotel - with 3 more legs of travel to make it home. Ironic that after 18 yrs in Kenya and 2 subsequent visits - it was the last 2 hrs before my exit of my 3rd visit that required such meds. I will never travel without it! I wish there was a better option to Doxy - can give wicked nightmares.

      Have the scrip literature that is issued by pharmacy with your name on it in your carry on or foto it or the scrip bottle and have on USB drive and your fon. Foreign pharmacists can prescribe many more items than western nations. Have the scrip or foto it. Anything to assist you to prove you legit. Be mindful of wide varying rules Ibuprofen can get you jammed up in a carry on going thru Dubai for example. Take nothing for granted with both OTC or scrip. Prepare, you'll be fine. They worried about ketamine, rufies, etc and fentanyl, ice n such. Have ur scripts n have ur otc bottles. Do ur homework, download fotos from drug ID sites for all your pills. Then your g2g. Flying thru multiple nations airports is much diff than a thru hike of the Appalachian trail. Just saying.

      Thank you! I hope you figure out a good way not to check any luggage on your European trip. Once you experience the freedom of carry-on life, with the time and money saved and greater security, it's hard to go back! I recognize the additional challenges you may have but there are plenty of ladies who live the carry-on-only life. Bon voyage!

    0:30 BOOM! Stop right there. Travelling in Europe on many of the respective airlines, only ONE bag is allowed not two. Check beforehand. Weight limits are very often just 7kg.

    • @theinternationalvoyager
      @theinternationalvoyager  Před rokem +3

      You're right - some European airlines don't allow you to carry a personal item bag along with a carry-on. And some allow only a personal item with no standard sized carry-on bag at all. Plenty of airlines worldwide, however, do allow a carry-on bag plus a personal item bag, like I've shown in this video, for no extra charge to the ticket. During most of my travels worldwide, I've carried these two bags as I've demonstrated here, with no issues, so this video should be used as a guide for flying under those rules (my bags are under weight and size requirements). That being said, on my most recent flight, last week, I flew from Bucharest, Romania, to Istanbul, Türkiye, on Pegasus Airlines, and they did not allow a personal item bag along with my carry-on bag. This presented me with a challenge. So I went into the airport restroom and stuffed my laptop and umbrella and underwear packing cube in the Osprey backpack, and managed to stuff my toiletry case and liquid bag in the pockets of my hoodie that was tied around my waist. I then stuffed my sandals down the front of my trousers and I folded up the backpack (that was empty except for the items in the smaller pocket) and shoved it down the back of my pants (I had to loosen my belt to get this to work). With this method, I was able to basically make my personal item bag "disappear." Since my jacket and hoodie were tied around my waist, this time with my jacket tied above my hoodie, I was able to walk up to the gate, say hello to the airline employee, have her scan my boarding pass, and walk down the jetway and onto the plane and all the way to my seat with nobody giving me a second glance. However, I did have to remove the items before I sat down from my trousers once I got on the plane, which can be done in the airplane lavatory. I hope to do a follow-up video about how I accomplished this soon.

      @@theinternationalvoyager Nicely done!..Always a worry when traveling that you are suddenly in a situation where you are told you cannot take all you have on you...Panic!...What can you leave?...All costs money and have to leave anything no matter how small would be annoying. Especially if everything is pretty much essential...Not that I have traveld alot..infact only twice....But this could be a problem on any trip with the continually changing rules airlines enforce. ...BUT!!..I have taken the plunge and am traveling alone for the first time since losing my partner to cancer.. Life has been tough without her..She was my everything..Took care of me...(health problems)..So times have been dark...The light in that darkness has been a Japanese all female rock band whom I have come to adore!..So much so I am fighting my depression etc to make a trip of a lifetime (for me) to Japan (from UK)to see them LIVE in concert in Tokyo...And as it's so expensive to fly out..I decided as it might be the only time I'll ever get to Japan in my life...I am gonna stay for 3 weeks to make it even more worth the cost (which is considerable, infact I should not be spending such money)...I have no travel experience (all past trips, 2, where booked and sorted by my late partner). It will be tough going being alone. But hope it will be a memory I can treasure..even if I have no-one to share it with.

    My target is one bag, less than 7kg not including the laptop (1.2kg MacBook Air) which I can pull out as my personal item when weighing. And a 1.5L waist pack with money, credit cards, passport, etc. and in flight essentials.

    I have trouble believing that your "carry on" luggage fits the airline restrictions...
    Usually the limit is one carry on plus one personal item, both below 7 kg.
    Your farpoint 40 weighs 1.3, so does your laptop...that's 2.6 kg already.
    You travel with several pairs of pants and a lot of T-Shirts......each pair of pants weighs at minimum 300 grams.......

    • @theinternationalvoyager
      @theinternationalvoyager  Před rokem

      The Osprey Farpoint 40 backpack weighs in at 6 kg while fully packed, as shown in the video. The personal item bag weighs in at 3.4 kg. Both of these are well under most airlines’ weight restrictions.

    9 pairs of underwear! My god man! 9 pairs! I've done months with 4 and sometimes I think that's too much. I think I'm taking too many socks but I haven't managed to reduce these in number below 6 pairs. 6 pairs of socks that are a mix between long, ankle and no show. This is when I go through different climate zones and I wear two pairs when it's cold.

    • @theinternationalvoyager
      @theinternationalvoyager  Před rokem +1

      Ha, I hadn't thought about doubling up on my socks. In a couple of weeks I'm going to be going on a 4 day bus trip from Istanbul, Turkiye, to Vlorë, Albania, stopping in Sofia, Bulgaria; Skopje, North Macedonia; and Tirana, Albania. This will be in the dead of winter in the Balkans and it will be frigid. I was thinking of buying some wool socks for this trip. But I think I'll just follow your example and wear two at a time. Thanks for the tip! As for the underwear, to each his own! I don't know how I would get by with so few.

      Midnight train trip between Skopje and Sofia. Passport control done over an oil drum. That was a great experience. Take snacks, share them with others in the carriage. A young attractive officers came into the carriage and started shaking things up. People jumping about. I sat trying to look like the grey man and got no hassles. Afterwards I got an approving pat on the shoulder from a couple of the more experience local travelers who knew not how to get attention. Then trying to change money in Nis on the black market for the next travel leg at 4.00am. I don't smoke but always have cigarettes at hand to lubricate conversation by offering one. Look out for Skenderbeu Brandy when in the region. Surprisingly good. Have a blast. Safe and let's hear about your trip please. Socks - Have you tried merino wool? I never wear cotton or nylon. Waste of time. Cotton takes ages to dry.

      I like your idea of carrying cigarettes as gifts when traveling across international borders, especially when dealing with foreign authority figures. I don't smoke, either, but they don't take too much space and might help in certain situations. Thanks for your anecdotes and I hope to make a little video of my five-day trip across the Balkans.

    @theinternationalvoyager Hi, thank you for this great video! I’d love to know how you deal with cellular data coverage while in different countries, as well as having a local phone number when it's needed? (Even though great, we’ve found that Google Fi won't work for us as Americans traveling full-time internationally, because we are not going back to the USA regularly, which Google requires.) Relying on Wifi doesn't seem ideal, as Wifi in an Airbnb or hotel may be ok, but what about using maps for navigation when out and about and not on Wifi, etc? Any advice is appreciated, thank you!

    • @theinternationalvoyager
      @theinternationalvoyager  Před rokem +1

      Thank you! Since, as you mentioned, Google Fi doesn't work for Americans who are permanently out of the country, I buy a SIM card when I arrive in each new country I visit, usually at the airport. This can be a tedious chore but it is now a bit easier because you can sometimes buy E-SIMs online before you get to a country -- these are digital SIMs that allow you to access a cell network in a country without having to buy a physical SIM. Soon, this will probably become universal because Apple has announced that they will be shortly discontinuing physical SIM cards in iPhones. Separately, you mentioned Google Maps... are you aware that you can download the Google Maps for a region to your phone before you get there so that you can access them if you are without wifi or cell signal? This is one thing I always try to do before I go to a new country - I download the maps of the next city or country I am going to visit so that they are on my phone in "Offline Maps" in Google Maps and I can always access them even if I haven't been able to get a SIM card in my new country. Here's how to use Offline Maps:

    • @theinternationalvoyager
      @theinternationalvoyager  Před 2 lety +2

      It's a tough balance. As it is now, I can go nine or ten days without needing to do my laundry. If I take fewer shirts I take means I have to do laundry more regularly, which is not what I want to do when I travel. One solution is to buy a few t-shirts in each destination and then throw them away the next time I get on a plane, but that's wasteful. I guess I could donate them. Anyway, it's a fun problem to have. Thanks for your feedback.
