  • Both Ben and I have made improvements to our cars to allow us to go faster out on track. At our second track day, we really started to push the envelope! However, with going faster comes a few different problems that we faced.

      victor kanuik step 1, don't build it. Lol, stock, with decent tires, good brake pads, good overall mechanical condition, and fresh fluids. Lots of Hondas and Mazdas that can hit the track stock and have a blast.

      @ToogiDesign Před 6 lety +5

      YES! if you want to keep going to these events, a new reliable car is a must. get a RWD car that has cheap consumables....like a miata. i drive an s2000 and EVERYTHING is expensive. tires, brakes, and a BUNCH of seat time...you will be a lot more happy.

    The brake pad thing is normal I keep spare sets in my car
    Turning your rotors every few pad changes helps slow it down
    It suxs it broke down
    I hope it’s something simple!

    • @TylorsAdventures
      @TylorsAdventures Před 6 lety

      never never never turn your rotors, it’s one of the biggest safety hazards anyone can do for brakes.

    • @MRTuning704
      @MRTuning704 Před 6 lety +1

      +Facade it's a bigger hazard not turning your rotors because they can shatter overheat and worp also if the rotor is not smooth you will ruin your pads also your loseing stoping power it's not bad to turn a rotor that's in spec

    • @thatautomotiveblog
      @thatautomotiveblog Před 6 lety +2

      Both of you are right and wrong. Turning rotors on a street car doesn't harm much. The pads aren't aggressive enough on most street cars (and by that I mean the standard Civics and Camrys) to overheat discs, and are not used nearly as often in high stress conditions, so turning the rotors only helps bed in new pads more effectively given that the optimum temperature for the maximum friction coefficient won't be reached often enough on most street cars often (unless Bunta Fujiwara borrowed your Prius for the night).
      On race cars on the other hand it's a different story. Now note that race-cars have to meet the spec for brakes to follow the homologations of whatever racing class they are in (i.e. Cayman GT4, which has 20" wheels and massive brembos in street trim, while the CS and CS MR trims get 18" wheels with smaller performance friction calipers (and by transitive property, rotors)). Most often, performance street cars run the same pad, or the variation of the same pad on one set of rotors (and more or less applies to race cars). Not to mention, they have 2 piece floating rotors, or at least 2 piece rotors, just like the race cars. They don't suffer from most of the beating handed to them by the racing pads as much as one piece rotors, so in turn they don't have to be cut (and if I remember correctly, it's advised to never cut them and just replace them). And one piece rotors found on the spec miatas and whatnot don't suffer that much of a beating as long as a quality brand is purchased (i.e. brembo).
      At the end of the day, cross hatching the rotors with some 200-400 grit sand paper never hurts, and has the benefits of both(cutting and not cutting) without the drawbacks. That's pretty much all that's done to flywheels and rotors in most shops, and most rotors getting new pads even on the street cars don't get cross hatched more often than every 2-3 changes. Basically it all depends on a variety of factors as to whether you should turn your rotors or shouldn't.
      -Suren.

    • @LapoftheWorld
      @LapoftheWorld Před 6 lety

      +1 to keeping spare pads. I think everyone learns that lesson at some point. I won't start a weekend on less than 2/3rds pad thickness without having a spare set of "real" pads, and I'll typically have some crappy "get home" pads that I leave in the toolbox just in case.

      yeah, i prefer the odd, more subtle builds people dont expect. I got a lot of interesting looks or comments when people asked about my car (sold it now)...a 2004 Cavalier. But with a swapped motor, upgraded.ported blower, and bumper to bumper upgrades while keeping it almost 100% stock looking...it shocked a lot of people. In fact, my 04 Cav was blue and a 2 door, so it looked very similar to his Escort! Unusual cars ftw ^_^

    It's like everything not to do for a track day.
    - Go off track multiple times (obviously driving above abilities, as a novice, still slow)
    - Show up with not enough brake pad material (Could be dangerous to yourself or possibly hit someone else)
    - Blow an engine (best case scenario is cancelling the session to get towed off, worst case is spilling oil/fluid and making it dangerous for everyone else)
    HPDEs are meant to be fun and educational. It's especially rewarding to push oneself, make some minor on track mistakes, learn from them and improve. This is veering on irresponsibility for basic track etiquette.

  • @inline_sicks9182
    @inline_sicks9182 Před 6 lety +1

    I learned a lot from this video like, most of how the lap times and the actual track prep and everything is from the driver.. like the driver is such a key element in dragging, tracking, time attack etc. because the driver is what what puts the car together, sure he/she could have help with like rebuilding the motor or trans or just stripping the interior, and this doesn't only apply to cars, but like motorbikes or truck, also the driver's skill is another key element that is basically a supplementary good to the body and mind...

    Good luck with the motor! If you haven't already, make sure you upgrade your brake fluid along with your pads. • @efcodpalama
    @efcodpalama Před 6 lety

    Short Ben,
    In my experience tracking there are two things you should look at.
    1. Cooling is the highest priority. Oil cooling, coolant cooling, transmission cooling. This has good effects on down the line. It keeps the engine from pinging or the oil from getting too thin/allowing metal on metal. If I had to guess, your car died of ping and/or too tight piston ring clearance. Temp control helps both those things.
    2. Dude, ditch the drilled rotors. They don't help anything and the propagate cracks. They are time bombs. Regular discs are way better or, if you want a tiny advatage in clearing glaze off the pads, slotted or dimpled rotors are fine.

    • @GearsandGasoline
      @GearsandGasoline  Před 6 lety +1

      Thanks for the advice man! The engine failure was actually from a clogged injector, leaning out cylinder #1. Also, the drilled rotors are the only rotor that wilwood offers for that big brake setup.

    I don't think I've seen the Bens standing next to each other like that ever before, makes you realize how tall Tall Ben really is! Yikes, how does he fit in the Evo???

    Those 2.0 zetecs have weak rods. I had a zx3 focus but it was all motor with stage 2 crowed cams

    It's weird how far along the Instagram page is to how far back the videos are, I understand how editing and working on a car is a hassle but man has so much happened since the engine blew

    Stock Mitsubishi Evo's must be pretty reliable if you can run them on the track just how they are... Sad to hear about the Escort, maybe switch to a Subaru WRX, Miata, or something else light and nimble..

    • @beatersho3497
      @beatersho3497 Před 6 lety

      Austin Becker the escort is light and nimble lol. Way better than an overdone miata

    Rookie question: why does modding make the car unreliable? Is it cheaper aftermarket parts, or too powerful, or it just wasn't done correctly?

    Even with an instructor onboard he spins? Time to take a step back and drive a stock Miata? Third spin might be the end of the EVO, or worse?

    • @beatersho3497
      @beatersho3497 Před 6 lety

      Matthew Schiebout miatas are so lame and boring. This is unique and interesting, and is quite a beautiful car. Just because it’s not your typical miata doesn’t mean it’s qualified for the track.

    • @rcmaniac9116
      @rcmaniac9116 Před 6 lety

      +ford expedition he's saying that about Ben in the evo. Matthew is saying he is spinning because he is pushing too hard and therefore needs to learn more car control using a stock Miata because it is great for learning basics and refining your skills
