  • Can you seriously cook a whole chicken in the microwave and have it be not only edible, but actually good?! Well, let's find out. A few months ago someone asked me if you could cook chicken in the microwave (think dorm rooms!), so today I'm trying it and the results will surprise you!

How to cook a whole chicken
    Ingredients:
    Whole chicken, defrosted
    Oil for skin
Salt and pepper, to taste (or seasonings of your choice)
    Oven Instructions:
Preheat the oven to 425°F/210°C. Oil and season your chicken. Place chicken into a roasting pan breast side up. Bake for 75 minutes, basting half-way through your time. Check the temp of the chicken for around 60 minutes and remove from the oven when the internal temp reaches 165°F. Out of the oven, cover with lid (or foil) and allow to rest for 10-15 minutes.
    Air Fryer Instructions:
Oil and season your chicken. Place chicken into the basket of your air fryer, breast side down. Set the air fryer to 360°F and set time for 60 minutes, turning over halfway through cooking. Check the temp of the chicken at 45 minutes, and remove when the internal temp reaches 165°F.
For rotisserie function: Season your chicken. Install your chicken onto the metal rotisserie rod (or squish into the rotating basket). Make sure you tie up the legs and wings so they do not get caught i the machine. Install your chicken into the air fryer. Use the Rotisserie function at 400°F for 45 minutes. Check the temp of the chicken at 35 minutes, and remove when the internal temp reaches 165°F
    Pressure Cooker Instructions:
Season your chicken (omit oil). Place wire rack/trivet inside the inner pot. Add 1 cup of water. Place the whole chicken into the inner pot on top of the rack (not in the water). Seal the lid and set your pot on high pressure for 14 minutes. At the end of the time, allow your pot to Natural Pressure Release (NPR) for 5 minutes before releasing the pressure. Check chicken temp right away at the thickest part of the bird. If the chicken is not at 165°F, reseal your lid and set your pot for another 1 minute.
    Sous Vide Instructions:
Oil and season your chicken. Set your immersion circulator to 150°F. Seal your chicken in a leak proof bag. Set your circulator for 6 hours. When timer goes off, heat your broiler to high. Take chicken out of the bag (reserve broth to use later), and place on a baking tray (with sides). Broil until the skin is golden brown which may take 5-7 minutes. Allow your chicken to rest before serving.
    Microwave Instructions:
Oil and season your chicken. Spray inside of a microwave safe baker with oil and place chicken into the baker. Microwave for 25-30 minutes or until internal temp reaches 165°F.

I have done this with my Tupperware Stack Cooker. It wouldn’t be my first choice to microwave a whole chicken, but to me it’s about the same as a pressure cooker chicken. Juicy but a bit tougher than a perfectly cooked oven chicken. Not #1, but it’s edible. Lol

I was given a microwave for Christmas around when microwaves were new, and didn’t have turntables, I cooked our Christmas turkey in it, my dad, who wasn’t a turkey lover, was extremely impressed and enjoyed it! Chicken is very easy.

Hi Heather, I knew it would work because one of the 1st PC parties I went to 10+ years ago they featured cooking in the deep covered baker. The consultant did the chicken in the microwave. I was so shocked I had to buy the deep covered baker but I don’t think I have ever used it in the microwave 🤷‍♀️. It has had tons of use in my oven. Loved watching your reaction and I think I still have a whole booklet of DC baker recipes the consultant gave me. If you would like me to look,

OK, first off, you crack me up. And I appreciate the fact that you actually have a microwave and not a combo microwave/convection oven like most people show doing a chicken. I just turn them off. My Anchor Hocking pie plate is supposed to be microwave safe, it blew up on me a couple of months ago. First time I used it, first time it ever happened. Ever. So I’m a little skittish. But I’ll see. Thanks for your time.

My fave Chef, David Chang, cooked chicken in the microwave. A for real, legitimate Chef doing it. There's a snobbery towards microwave food, that most have no other alternative. Appreciated for quickness and healthy choice. Maybe half cook in microwave, glaze, and put to finish in toaster oven to counter the texture?

I currently live in a boarding house with meals provided and a kitchen with both a regular oven and a large microwave oven. I could have used the oven after dinner but decided to use their large microwave to cook in. So, after watching your adventure in testing if a whole chicken could be cooked in a microwave using a covered baking dish, I was sold. My only disappointment is the microwave does not seem to produce a deeply browned skin which is my favorite part. Since my current situation is temporary, I will have future chickens baked in my own kitchen in a convection oven. However, I will buy a whole Foster Farms chicken and cook it in the microwave, using the breast meat for chicken salad sandwiches and eat the rest reheated in the same microwave for late-night snacks. Thank you, Heather, for an entertaining video and for declaring microwaved chicken edible even if a different texture to an oven-baked chicken. I will give Kinder Buttery Steakhouse a try as seasoning has always been a very important step in cooking a successful dish. I will bookmark this so I can post my own review after microwaving a chicken for myself. I do wonder if I could also cook a leg of lamb or a rack of lamb in one as lamb is my favorite meat.

Perfect and so juicy and yummy.

Actually the turn table worked great rotating it in a circle. I don't know if it mattered too much. But really.. it's crazy it worked! And confession, I had to make two chickens for a weekend getaway (chicken salad and chicken soup) and I legit used this again. I asked my family how the chicken tasted, everyone complemented! SHOCKED AGAIN! lol
