93. Dirt Cheap Fifty-Three Foot DREAM CRUISING YACHT [Full Tour] Learning the Lines

- Originally built in 1972, Durbeck made some really heavy duty cruising yachts, built to go anywhere. The hulls on the fiberglass Durbecks are extremely thick and overbuilt, leading to a heavy-displacement cruiser like this one.
In our opinions, this boat is a great deal for what it is. All old boats need work, but this one is pretty ready to move aboard and start a cruising lifestyle. The biggest things I would tackle would be the electronics, sails, and some cosmetic work, but for the price you can't beat this boat. I doubt you'll find a cheaper boat over 50 feet in this good of condition.

Learning the Lines is a channel about us, an average couple in our 20's, with big dreams to be sailing the world by the time we're in our 30's. We're not afraid to jump into anything, put in the work, and learn as we go. For this reason our channel is very DIY focused, with the goal to show anyone watching that a lot is possible if you're not afraid to make some mistakes along the way.
Please leave a like and comment if you've enjoyed the video, and subscribe if you haven't already.
Hi. Randy and Jordan, we are happily announce we have bought the Durbeck. Thanks for your in depth video tour, we are subscribers but want to do more for your video tours, don’t know how,
Hi Jeri, congratulations, please tell us what upgrades if any you have made to the Durbeck
Congrats, what an amazing boat. I fell in love instantly, it would be cool to see any updates yal might have done to her. Happy sailing
Make some videos of your new boat!
I live in Vero and have boated by that boat a few times. Surprisingly good condition from watching your video. I enjoy the series. Nice job❗️
Thanks for sharing, appreciate your insights and prospective on these fun boats.
I love the space below, and really love the pilot house. I have never seen a full on equipment room on a boat this side, and I think that’s fantastic. Even that little flip down counter in the kitchen was a very nice touch.
This was definitely a well thought out boat for a liveaboard.
Nice to see a big old boat like that kept clean and not messed up with broken parts everywhere. If you are not stuck in the ' everything has to be modern and new syndrome ' it could be a great boat. The right people are out there but not many. Hope it finds a good home.
Thanks for posting video. Cheers warren
Thanks, haven't seen that boat for about 30yrs or more. I did some electrical work on it back then.
One thing I really enjoyed was watching you guys bootstrap your own dream it's taking me a little bit of time to appreciate helping people dream on their own. This boat is definitely consistent with what you are doing

Thanks for posting and sharing. Great tour. Great vessel.
Love the old boats. So much style and beautiful wood.
She is beautiful!
Love the look of this, thanks for showing it to us
Recently found your channel and have been binge watching it all with my husband, who once worked on yachts in Florida. We’re in the U.K., I’ve never been to the States and love DIY. Husband says if I ever saw inside a Home Depot I would lose my mind. So if you want to make this happen lol, would you strap on a GoPro one time if you feel inclined, I love the out and about videos you do. It’s nice to see what life is like for other people. Big respect to the both of you for going for your dreams, it’s very refreshing to watch people having a go, not being afraid, and learning alongside them. Thanks for the great content. 🌷
Today is Thanksgiving over here. You reminded me I should be thankful for those orange monsters. I used to complain I was living in suburbia with a Home Depot on one side and a Lowes on the other a short bike ride away. The negative is our corner hardware stores are going away.
Always glad to see a little clipper in the bow. Beautiful boat through and through.
I love the lines of this boat and the layout is really spacious. Definitely a cruiser. Now just have to convince the admiral that it might be time to buy a boat! Thank you for the tour of this really great buy.
Thanks for watching as always Matt!
Wow, what a boat. And surprisingly shallow draft. I love it!
Nice boat!,love the lines, spacious layout and i bet would be a thrill to sail on in comfort with the pilothouse and the roomy deck area...a positive survey and i.m.o. this boat is great value for the money..thanks for sharing always great videos!:-)
always looking forward to your next boat tour guys!
Thanks so much!
another one off my list! thanx for saving me a ride ro vero !
Guys.. been restoring boats for 25 years. Saw a boat here and going to look at it next week. The open video and conversation gives a simple down to earth look at each vessel. Thanks Guys!,,,,
Very interesting. Thanks for the excellent overview
One of my Favorite Boats by far love the interior!
Amazing, one of the nicest layouts I’ve ever seen. I want it!
It's definitely a comfortable layout for a liveaboard couple or small family!
Thanks for sharing your info on the boat 👍
Love the boat tours we will be buying a boat in the next year or so to start our own
Really enjoying this series! I think this boat is my fav. so far.
Thanks Michael!
Love the videos, ability for engine haul out throw butterfly or other hatch is always nice to point out.
Excellent vid ya'll, thank you.
I'm new to these tours guys (this is my third) but I'm lovin' them already. I don't know how to access the actual written details though so the prices are a mystery (probably long sold anyhow). Well done to you both for a lovely, relaxing tour experience.
Interesting tour - you two make a great couple.
I know a few old leathernecks, that still rely their old Furuno sonar's instead of "that new fangled junk". They have a whole lot more nautical miles on them without incident, than I do, so who am I to question their ways? That model was introduced around 1973, so that was probably part of the original outfitting. They made those CRT scopes until around the mid 80's.
That old Stephens Engineering radio was a top notch HF RSS radio in it's day. They covered the 2 - 23 MHZ range, and had automatic channel blocking for restricted airwaves. That was like sorcery in 1970, when the 222 was introduced. The radio below it was probably installed as an upgrade, though I don't know why they would have kept the Stephens, other than possibly ship-to-ship communication.
They calculator looking thing in the Pilothouse that Randi was enquiring about, was basically a fancy TI-35, that could calculate and save trigonometric functions, and input them to an old chart plotter. Surprised that they didn't take that out when they upgraded.
These are great, heavy hulled vessels that are great for island hopping, or, full on bluewater touring. Lots of sail power to keep you moving. The only thing that I wouldn't like about this boat, is that there isn't a good useable, outside space to relax in, especially while at sea. All of the great things that come with having that Pilothouse, are lost when business hours are over, and it's time to kick your feet up and enjoy a meal and a few of your favourite beverage.
Great information. Thanks so much!
I remember the days of reading electronic navigation equipment, then checking it by shooting a star to see if the equipment was right.
OK, I'm an old salt.
But I can still kick your ass in a dingy race.
LOL
@@dgeorge852 Don't give up on shooting location. google russian medeling with GPS accuracy. Sextants could get back in fashion really quickly. im keeping mine for now
@@bophoto GREAT ADVICE!
That Volvo looks like a 6 cylinder with an inline injection pump, like a separate 6 piston engine in it's own right for fuel injection. Very reliable as long as it is not run out of fuel and cranked dry or water in fuel. These engines were used for European military vehicles.
Thanks for the good boat tour.
Loved the boat tour video, first class. Boat looks good but I personally would be hesitant to take on an older wood hull.
For the amount of antiquated equipment she looks super clean. Unless there is a hidden problem wouldn't take much to get her up to speed. Nice boat indeed
Guys loving the boat review videos, thanks 👍👏🏴⛵
Thanks for watching!
Isn't she pretty?
That ship.... Called. ....????
Sorry saw the Scots flag and couldn't resist! 😜
Wow! I love it, and the plan is to retire and sail the world. This looks like the perfect boat
That's a really nice boat, built before I was a teen...! Fine layout, easily livable! Thanks for the tour!
Thanks for watching!
You two are amazing. Had to subscribe
Great vid guys! Proves there are deals out there for those who don’t mind some elbow grease to make something great again. Thank you both!
Thanks for watching!
Love that boat! Love you guys channel and have really been enjoying you showing this boats.
Thanks for the kind words!
Like this sailboat ⛵️! Mike from Missouri
This was indeed a great price for an outstanding cruiser or live aboard! So much room down below, with tons of storage and sleeping berths. Not too sure about the wheel house though. Thanks again for sharing this tour with us. It shows that with a little bit of patience, a person has many options!
Thanks for watching!
Too bad we may never know what it sold for
oh yeah, this is an awesome boat w/lots of room!....I just wonder what the insurance on it would be?....Like you said, just a few minor fixes on it & you could live there if you wanted to. Sounds like a winner to me. (more bang for your buck) ty for the video
As usual...excellent presentation....I really like this boat!
Love your matter of fact narration in your videos. The final full and quick overview walkthrough is great. It gives you a great feel of the space and how one would feel maneuvering through the boat. Always keep that as a part of each video!!
The boat. Very nice boat for its age considering it was a live aboard. But even in such condition, it’s about $35-40,000 overvalued. And that is not being overly critical, seriously. The audience for this nice large boat is actually those that want to do a full refit and take advantage of the seriously solid hull and great live aboard layout to work with. If you opened that engine access and there was a clean and clear engine bay that reflected significant detailed attention paid to everything, the windows were more sufficiently clear, and there was a bit more updating to the electronics, again, details were more obvious, there would be more confidence in the condition below the waterline. Considering it having been lived aboard for extended times, that usually indicates not having been pulled from the water very frequently for routine preventive maintenance/updating and may have been a significant motivator to sell. That’s a possibly VERY pricey prospect to get things done “while it’s out of the water”, if you know what I mean (bottom paint, bearings, seals, etc.). That leaves what else may need to be addressed up higher with hardware. Because of its age there is a lot of “just in case” projects to be assured of long range reliability. The dual generator set up is a huge plus and even though it may be a bit noisy, I love the layout of this thing for a couple that wants to live aboard on the water. But if this is going to become another life at sea for another couple, there will definitely be some significant investment ($100-200,000 depending on how much “their own” they are seeking to get to) even if this is just a starting point and that money would be spent over time.
It’s a great layout for a boat of its size and age. If it was a dock baby that went out for a few short cruises and fix a few things as you go, that’s the buyer for this boat to leave as is at about $25-30,000 less than the ask. But if someone wants the feel of that super rock stable, sea worthy sail cruiser and wants to take advantage of that dual generator piece of mind and bring this beauty through another life on the high seas (which is probably the primary audience for this boat), the top end of the price range would probably be about $35,000. At that price it would be well worth a full workover. The layout along with that fat thick hull could confidently take someone on some pretty serious adventures!
I love the aft machine equipment room it's awesome.
Right?
Learning the Lines Love these videos! I am a Missouri born landlocked armchair sailor, never been sailing a day in my life. These videos allow me to learn so much! Question, is there room to stand up straight in the engine room around the workbench?
Thanks, Pete! (Getting there by marine mechanical guru dude is the first step!)
This is seriously value! What a classic girl and beautiful! Wow, you can't beat the price (pending survey of course)!!
Right???
Just subbed...out of all the channels, yours is unique. I really like the way you present each boat, and the ships you tour are actually from a non-invested (like a broker or owner) point of view, where you show both positive and negative. Also, the ships are more realistically priced...inspires one to dream....
They have no idea. No experience.
I am bingeing your channel and am loving every minute! This boat while it is a lot of boat is off the chain cool. What a bargain for those not of the feint of heart. Probably could be sailed by two. Perfect workable boat/floating home. You two are very talented and able. More comments to come but too busy watching!!! Will need a pretty costly electronics refit before any real long passage making, or at minimum the radar.
I like your videos I have one question how do they sell
S a i l
I think this is my favorite boat yet. She would not take to much to get her up to speed.
This is definitely one of the top three monohulls we've seen so far!
How much he is asking for this boat
Enjoyed seeing this boat , liked the wood stove, fold up countertop and the equipment room. Tight engine space to work on anything was the only downside I saw to this boat. Cool cockpit, not huge but very functional. I don't know how you come up with so many different types of boats but keep up the good work.
I just keep my eyes out on all of the pertinent boat websites! Thanks for watching!
Live aboard beauty!!
Really set up for lifestyle i board
What a nice lay out. Easy boat to live on.
Beautiful old boat!
Radar is golden. When the chart plotter decides to act up or go out that radar will keep you dialed. We use them on the tugs all the time. Still today. That boat is amazing!!! I want it!
I like it. Great older live aboard, sail a little, live a lot....keep a handyman in projects. Thanks.
i think: a old boat of 53 foot is a perfect dimension!!! ciao.
I enjoy these boat tours, it gives viewers the opportunity to look at different layouts and issues that may arise.
Maybe you guys will end up as yacht brokers.
cheers.
Thanks for the kind words! I don't really see us as brokers, though. Builders, maybe. Lol
what were they asking for this boat. good quality informative reviews. thank you both. thank you to the three of you now!clifford
Great boat. Smart layout
Assuming the hull is in perfect shape along with all mechanical, electrical and sailing equipment in at least stable working order. I think it would be a great boat to get then spend 50 Grand on modernizing it. A ton of space, great storage, lots of potential there for sure.
Cool boat thanks for the tour. The only one so far I would contemplate, others had nice outside but poor layout. Agree with comment on engine space but maybe that could be changed by moving batteries. Can’t beat Pro Furl, like the behind mast furlers for cruising. Andy UK
You two do s great job showing boats. I always look forward yo the next show.
A couple suggestions. When a boat sells, such as this one.
Please add the selling price (if known) and keep the old asking price up so we get a good feel for the selling field.
Also late comers like me on this one get an idea of what it was going for. I think I saw someone say 200k? Way out of my range but a nice viewing just the same. There's always room for dreaming.
Id like to see more affordable sail boats 30-40 ft range.
Just the same though. Thanks for these dream boat tours too.
really wish he would learn the difference between a cockpit and a pilothouse he uses the terms interchangeably as if they are one in the same
agree I found this exact same boat, yet 1974 model and these are quite rare I can find little information or examples to do a price comparison and unfortunately he's removed the asking price
THAT BOAT IS FREAKING AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE THE LAYOUT I LOVE THE SPACE, I LOVE HOW THE WHITE PAINT REALLY LIGHTENS IT UP!
It's definitely very spacious and bright!
Extremely neat and clean boat also. Looks like she was loved and taken care of. Just dont like the diesel under main cabin bed.
It kinda looks like a Motor-Sailor. I'm gonna buy it … As soon as I win the Lottery...
Love this boat , its the best yacht yet , i would move that rowing boat that sits in the middle of the deck to the stern for 3 reasons 1 ) put solar panels , 2 ) a place to lay out on , and 3 ) put a few more deck windows in and get a bit more light and air into the living quarters below
Wow what a sweet layout!Great boat and for 75 thousand, thats a deal.
No, it needs 100,000$ to make cruise able. That's why the price. But for 200,000$ total, you will have a million dollar yacht that would sell after 5 years for 125.000 . Great deal.
interesting walk through seems good bang for the buck
Thanks!
Nice boat. Great price and many nice features
I think I like this one best so far
What a beautiful boat
Love a good pilothouse!
radios wer sideband am had one on a old fishing boat i worked on great job guys
Thanks!
What a cool boat! My dad was a broker when I was a kid, but he was a motor yacht guy, but I’ve always liked sailboats. I remember he bought a Hans Christian one time and I just thought it was the most amazing thing I’d ever seen. Like he says, “there’s two kinds of people... sailboaters and motor-boaters.” 😂 he’s older so he doesn’t get the irony lol
What a beautifully kept vessel
keep 'em coming
I love your videos!
What a gr8 boat!
this is a good value for a boat
Great vid
I wish In was younger to buy that boat. Nice Tour
It all looks good but if you’re interested get a survey done there’s heaps of other stuff to consider eg the hull, the rig,the sails ,the motor, the electrics, the keel the paint the electronics etc etc
I call dibbs on the early 70's Furuno sonar!
I'd love to see it running haha
now THIS is a very spacious boat for it's size
I actually looked at this boat as well and still like it, but decided to go a different direction. Fair winds guys.
Look forward to your next tour
Very nice,, plenty of room,, well set out,,
As someone noted the top radio is a marine SSB. Would probably need to be tested. Transmitters as old as this will usually need to have some components replaced. The bottom radio is a SITEX 200 shortwave receiver (has weatherfax capability).
Beautiful Boat wouldnt change a thing...one lucky new owner when they got it😁🦾🔥🔥🔥
I like behind the mast roller that is what is on my boat as well
Dang I wish I knew when you guys were in Vero. I would've taken you guys out for dinner at one of my favorite little restaurants. It's called Mr Manatees
best one so far
very good job thanks
You guys should buy it... The price is great for such a nice large heavy duty F/G live a board...Up date the electronics, a good clean, new upholstery... I think I should buy it!
Really nice in so many ways..
She's a real beauty. Thanks.
That's a great boat.
Yes the Windless is electric. I have one just like it. It's an all brass windlass. Good Windlass!
Awesome!
Well the switch was next to it. Lol
It's got alot of character. Good price.
Great video guys
Dsb, great find.
