Desolation Canyon became famous after John Wesley Powell’s historic descent of the Green and Colorado Rivers in 1869 and 1871. This nearly untouched canyon is deeper in some places than the Grand Canyon at the Bright Angel Trail, featuring scenic red rock canyon walls that tower overhead. The canyon is also family friendly, with more than 50 Class II-III rapids which can be navigated via oar raft, inflatable kayak, or paddle raft. Off the water, you’ll explore Native American ruins, abandoned homesteads, and maybe even the hideout of the infamous Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

Man i remember doing this freshman year of high school. Best experience of my life. Biggest rapids were a couple class 3s. There was hail and lightning in the canyon. I remember literally seeing the bolt of lighting touch like a few hundred yards from us and it being pink. Also a boulder the size of a car fell off the canyon maybe 2min after we past the spot it directly hit. Man i miss it

Just rowing down the river and finding a lunch spot. We had a lot of miles each day.

What were the dates of this trip? I’m doing a late March trip soon, trying to get a feel for how cold it will be.

@@GarrettMorrow 4 times now for me. Early May one trip,, with ice on the edges and canoe every morning,, and mid July at 110F,, water levels from above 20,000 to below 2,000, and a couple in the middle. Always different, always wonderful. You guys did well. If you ever have an unused slot on your permit,, contact me and ask. If I can make it, I will.
