Dark Side of being Chinese Indonesian

  • Hi Folks,
Chinese Indonesians face some stereotypes: we are loaded, great with number and business savvy. But the reality is more nuanced. Quick internet search on Chinese Indonesian stereotypes will tell different regions have their own stereotypes. This video is based on my personal observation growing up as Chinese Indonesian (Chindo) in Jakarta and inner social circles.
My parents do expect us to excel at school, manage our money well and aim to become business owner. Fair aspirations at glance but it's not what it seems. I hope this video will shine some lights on intricate relationship between cultural heritage and environment that drive these aspirations.
    DISCLAIMER:
It's not my intention to perpetuate stereotypes. My story is mine alone and I don't speak for other Chinese Indonesians. I hope viewers would better understand where we are coming.
Please like and subscribe if you learn something new.
You can also buy me a coffee if my content helps you in any way, I’ll appreciate it very much as it helps feeding my young family.

To the Chinese in general, to be wealthy is a ticket to escape unjustified discrimination by whoever and by whatever reasons. Chinese had learned their lessons in history well, and therefore reality and pragmatism are in their blood.

Very true. Chinese are also some of the most pragmatic people I have ever met. I am seeing this in Jewish community as well

I think a "national mindset" really depends on the socioeconomic situation the said nation is in. Today in the People's Republic of China this kind of hustle culture is also quite prevalent, some may say it is being intentionally promoted, in workplace. But a culture of radical egalitarianism among the working class never fades away; after all, decades of communist revolutionary movement didn't end in vain.
By the way, we don't forget about the miseries we endured past and present; we remember and learn. 蓄芳待來年!

You do think that the spectre of the Chinese being used as middle men in Colonial administrations has also contributed to a negative perception of Chinese Indonesians? Also not converting to Islam.

    • @Hendra23155
      @Hendra23155  Před 6 měsíci

Maybe, 350 years of colonialism will surely leave traces. I can’t really comment on not being Muslim is a factor, though converting won’t hurt to assimilate into society mainstream.

Wow, Chinese culture has so much in common with Cuban culture - your family talks, focus on money, education, and success, boss vs bullied sound exactly like Cuban culture. Including familial shaming, but yes these definitely are effective because the Chinese people I've met are consistently the highest performing and most educated, and Cubans have completely taken over Miami.

@@Hendra23155 I appreciate that. My family has always spoken highly of and respected the Chinese, and has a long history with the Chinese in Cuba; at many family gatherings we would share stories from Cuba, from before the communist revolution in Cuba, and I thought I'd share this one with you my friend: my great grandfather was of Spanish decent, and was a judge in the government - he witnessed how the Chinese suffered persecution from corrupt Cuban police who would regularly abuse them and fabricate charges against them.
The Chinese were very hard working and well mannered people, and my grandfather wasn't going to allow the police to harm them anymore - when a Chinese man was brought into his court for more persecution, he punished the police and protected the Chinese community. This was unprecedented, and very risky. My grandfather used to carry a revolver after that.
He didn't expect anything from it, and did it to do the right thing - but after that the Chinese community would always bring gifts of food to our family, for years afterwards. I heard about this story over many family gatherings, even decades later our family still remembers the good manners, honesty and hard work of the Chinese in Cuba.
It is quite special, because today people are friends or even family for decades but forget all the good and might break apart over one small thing - it is very rare to find people who remember the good, even for many years. And this is the sunnah in Islām, in fact many of these good manners are also in Islām, though sadly many Muslims don't practice it today - may Allāh guide us.
May Allāh bring friendship, cooperation and goodness between our peoples Hendra.
