  • Hi Folks,
In this video I am going to share some unwritten business practices foreigners need to be aware of before starting a business in Indonesia. The list isn't exhaustive and I won't go into nitty gritty details or naming any institution.
Aim of this video is to prep you what to expect at street level. Yes, unwritten business practices mentioned here are unsavoury but it's better to see reality as it is so we can best prepare our responses.
I am still waiting for the day where rules of law are enforced indiscriminately and people act with utmost integrity. In perfect world this video won't be necessary.
Indonesian phrases mentioned in this video:
Uang Rokok: literally means cigarette money. It's coded word to illicit bribery or facilitation money
Uang Keamanan: money paid to provide for security. it's coded word in preman's world to extort business owners.
Uang Pelicin: facilitation money to smooth things out e.g. procuring necessary licenses or securing tender.
UUD (Ujung-Ujungnya Duit): at the end of the day it's all about money. Humorous derivation from UUD abbreviation (Undang-Undang Dasar) - Indonesian 1945 Constitution.
Pungutan Liar (Pungli): illegal charge extorted by shady officials or 'Preman' (see below). Usually dressed up as 'Uang Keamanan'.
Preman: street thugs or gangster. Sometimes act as hired hands to intimidate rivals, collect debtors or 'protest for a cause'.
Kena tipu: being deceived, scammed, back stabbed.
Kalau bisa dibikin susah kenapa harus gampang: why make it easy if you can make it hard. Sarcasm, usually uttered out of frustration with bureaucracy.
Tolong dibantu ya Pak: please help us smooth things out Sir.
Nanti ada uang rokok: I'll compensate for your trouble.
Wish you all the best running business in Indonesia.
Please like and subscribe if you learn something new.
You can also buy me a coffee if my content helps you in any way, I’ll appreciate it very much as it helps feeding my young family.

    Many thanks,
    Hendra

Ah damn. I recently visited Indonesia and took notice of the investment opportunities there. Did some math while on vacation and started to think it seemed too good to be true. Now it makes more sense. Bribes to government bureaucrats, bribes to local gangs, ah yes now it's starting to feel like a third world country.

@@Hendra23155 Haha no, I was thinking about building a boarding house or hotel or something. My girlfriend is Indonesian so if we got married she could own the land in her name. And from what I could tell, building a small hotel is cheaper than owning a modest American home... But maybe not when you factor in bribes.

If what you are saying is true then it’s fantastic news!!

Salah satu alasan kenapa gak mau jadi civil worker, PNS, anything along those jobs : mentalitasnya busuk. Isinya gabut. Duit aspirasi. Duit bancakan.
Meanwhile, when we try to make our own business, the hurdles just always there. I mean, the system itself is the hurdle.
Another problem is, the govt. forbide people to do this or that, but it cannot provide necessities for people to living. Such as, opening cafe above 8 p.m when lockdown. The reason is right. But, how they act toward people are harsh. The result, it was a really heartbreaking dispute.
Policeman : "YOU HAVE TO CLOSE THE CAFE. RIGHT. NOW !!!"
Cafe owner : "Yes. We know that. But, YOU'RE NOT IN OUR POSITIONS !!! YOU HAVE STABLE MONTHLY SALARY !!! BUT WHAT ABOUT US ???? I NEED TO FEED MY FAMILY, MY EMPLOYERS !!!! DOES THE GOVT. FEED THEM ???!!!! NO !!!! IT. IS. ME !!!!"
    Policeman : ".................." (dead silent)

      @@Hendra23155 aamiin.
Iya kang. Megang prinsip emang berat, income gak jelas, gak stabil.
Tinggal pilih, mau kerja stabil tapi sistemnya bobrok, apa mau kerja sesuai kata hati, tapi penghasilan gak pasti.
Kebetulan juga, tes psikologi saya jaman kelas 1 SMA dulu, kira2 15 tahun lalu, salah satunya jadi wiraswasta. Alias, butuh otonomi sendiri. Bener2 kerasa, gak bisa diatur2 orang. Mentok jadinya mitra, bukan karyawan. Berat ? Jelas iya. Jadi kadang2 cekcok sama orang.
Ada juga yang cerita, awalnya sales, jelas kompetitif, trus nyoba jadi PNS. Ternyata bener, dia ngerasa kek gini amat jadi PNS. Enakan jadi swasta, lebih terlatih. Gabut bener jadi PNS. Bukan ngejelekin PNS, faktanya emang demikian.

@@lelouchlamperouge3077 Megang prinsip emang berat=> nah! gak banyak yg kek gini. Bykan embat duit trus tutup mata. Pegang prinsip biar berat dlm hati lbh damai and ada self-respect.
Beberapa temen balik Sydney kerja jd pegawai padahal di Indo bs jd boss tinggal lanjut usaha ortu. Hati gk tenang liat praktek di lapangan, terlalu kotor. Disini paling gk hatinya bs damai.

@@Hendra23155 guru saya sendiri yang bisa dikatakan jadi panutan orang, tempat rujukan kalo ada masalah, sampe bupati pun pay respect ke beliau, mengamini kok kalo orang2 kita ya emang udah busuk kek gitu sistemnya. Susah mau dibenerin. Udah membudaya.
Serius, beneran berat megang prinsip disini. Megang prinsip, tapi duit jadi dikit. Lepas prinsip, auto kaya. Pernah dicritain bahkan, kalo ada proyek anggaplah nilai 1T, realisasinya paling 300M. 700M nya ? Buat bancakan, duit dibagi2. Gilak...... I feel soooo disappointed... Malu banget. Beda sama orang luar yang dianggap negeri kafir, tapi mereka kerjanya jujur, punya prinsip, menghargai orang. Disini malah kebalik. Begitulah ujian Tuhan. Sekuat apa kita bisa megang prinsip di tengah badai. Ini perkara sampai hidup sesudah mati nanti, bukan cuma perkara perut kenyang doang di dunia yang sebentar ini.
