You can always swap the rockers around to see if the tick follows.

Don’t do this!!! Valve train components get worn down to each other, every lifter, pushrod, and rockers have to stay in the same place as when first assembled. Failing to do this could cause excessive ware patterns and possibly part failures. Speaking from experience not just out my ass lol. 👍

@@bennettstevens3596if so then the parts are worn and should be replaced.

@@petescustomcarshop No. The components get worn to each other you will see ware marks when doing a tear down but that doesn’t mean they’re worn that means that the parts are broken in. There is of course excessive ware. But any engine builder will tell you to never swap valve train components around that’s why valve train organizers exist so every part goes back exactly where it was removed from.

@@petescustomcarshopAnd i’m not trying to call my self a professional here. One quick google proves i’m right though lol. The comments wear together and should never be moved from their original position period. And never mix new with old.

I use the palm of my hand or fingers on the spring side of the rocker when it is running to determine which one is making noise. I don't think the rocker arm itself can be bad unless the rollers are bad in the fulcrum, slight play like you showed will not cause a tick. It would have to be an oil delivery/pressure problem or a bad lifters. Did you replace the lifters with new? One more thing is it the original camshaft? Do the lifters sink down when the rocker is tighten down? I have seen the push rod wear into the cup on the rocker and cause a tick before but yours look good to me.

Were you able to figure out what is wrong? I been thinking about this lately and I remember some engines that I have rebuilt using the old lifters and cam would take up to two days to stop ticking even replacing the head gaskets on an 3100 the rockers will tick for hours of running the engine when finished. I will just do 30 second run stops and that helps to get the lifters pumped up again.
