  • Linux is incredible at networking, but before we can really use it to its potential, we have to understand how networks and the Internet itself works.
In this video we learn about network address translation (NAT), IPv4, IPv6, and how Linux interacts with the local network, and DNS servers. It's truly touching on a bit of everything, and should give you a glimpse into the world of networking.

Could you please make a brief video about subnetting, how and why it is used as well? It would be awesome to learn it from you.

It is important to state that the ipv6 shown here on 12:06 is not "on the internet"! it is a link-local address (for LAN communication) and not a GUA (Globally Unique Address) which is a "real" routable IPv6 address.

I swear, every one of these Linux videos I think to myself, "he should include X," and somewhere later in the video, you talk about X. It's almost uncanny. Good job!

I'm really looking forward to more networking videos. I've been into IT for over a decade and I'm still struggling with this. Things can get pretty intense quickly!

"I had to install nettools to get ifconfig" man I feel you there. I cut my teeth on the 2.2 tree and finding out a bunch of the tools I used to use are no longer part of the standard binary distribution in a bunch of distros makes me feel like such a noob.

You say router but its the modem that connect to the internet, granted most modems have a built in router nowadays.

Ha! Thanks. Funny thing about my eyes... they're actually sorta grey. So if I'm wearing green they look greenish, if I'm wearing blue, they look bluish.
I basically have the "tofu" of eye color. They absorb whatever they're around. :D

The Linux Essentials content I have here? Other folks have passed based on this stuff, and if you have your CCNA, I would suspect probably so... But Linux is a different beast. Be sure to look over the objectives linked in the description. :)
