Total solar eclipse frenzy grips North America

- A total solar eclipse is currently sweeping across North America.
Millions of people across the US, Mexico and Canada will be able to see the moon block the sun.
In some places, the total eclipse lasts more than four minutes.
Scientists will also be using the eclipse to conduct experiments - to learn more about our closest star.
Al Jazeera's John Hendren is in Indianapolis which is just about to experience totality.

I’m so sad for poor John (and his cameraman) in Indianapolis, providing a constant commentary to camera instead of actually looking up at this incredible sight, and at the world around you! 😩
I witnessed the total eclipse in August 1999, and I was lucky enough not to have to even leave my home town for it! I lived in Cornwall (in the SW of UK) and I watched it with seemingly the majority of people in my town, up on this high piece of land with a view of the valleys and villages all around. We had major cloud cover unfortunately, so I didn’t get those magical moments of seeing the corona etc with real clarity, but amidst all the clouds it was still startling to witness, and seeing the coverage today in the US has brought back those memories for me. Seeing the shadow come sweeping in across the valleys and then the pinpricks of streetlights blinking on with night seemingly falling around you in very real time, all while feeling that very distinct drop in temperature on an otherwise warm August day… such a strange and wonderful and exciting experience (but curse those clouds!)
There’s not another total eclipse in the UK until 2090 - chances are I’m not going to be around to see that one at the age of 108, so if I want to see another one in my life then I’ll have to travel for it!

Just saw it in Bloomington, Indiana where they were announcing over intercom in Hendren's shot lol. Absolutely unbelievable experience! John Hendren is right, it really is understandable how that could just terrify those hundreds or thousands of years ago. I was shaking uncontrollably from awe and amazement. Ive witnessed 4 or 5 eclipses in my life time which is weird considering some people have never witnessed one.. im in northern Arizona so it wasnt total eclipse but it was still interesting to watch using a welding mask..
