- Iran's Supreme Leader has declared five days of national mourning following the death of President Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash. The wreckage was found early on Monday. The foreign minister, one of the nine on board, has also been confirmed dead.
Al Jazeera’s Michael Appel reports on how events unfolded before and after the crash.

The headline is misleading. Ebrahim Raisi was responsible for the executions of so many Iranians, he was known as the "butcher of Tehran".
In the late 1980s and early 90s, between 4,000 and 5,000 political prisoners were executed thanks to Raisi and his so-called "death committee". Many were denied due process, and according to Amnesty International, the decisions on which prisoners to execute and which prisoners to spare were "arbitrary in the extreme".
More recently, in the nationwide protests following the senseless murder of a young Kurdish woman by Iran's notorious "morality police", Raisi oversaw the regime's violent crackdown of protests, in which many young Iranian women and men ... including actual kids ... were arrested, beaten, tortured, raped, and murdered -- for the simple act of speaking out against an oppressive, evil, theocratic regime.
So who exactly is mourning?!

Iran has a very big fleet of transport helicopters especially this one must be up to date and functional. Even though they have sanctions there is a big market for them for spear parts. But all high senior officials of iran are getting killed. 3 helicopters and the only one gets fallen of from the sky, in the very far border with Azerbaijan. I am a Commercial Pilot, Flight Instructor. It had nothing to do with the condition of the helicopter. It was the weather or an inside job.

Could have been the altimeter that 'failed'. In a fog situation that is crucial. He got up in the morning and wouldn't ever thought that would be the last. That is no away to die, for the family and friends, is a trauma the way their life ended. May they rest in peace.

This helicopter was manufactured 8 years before the Shah was overthrown. That's 53 years ago. And no spare available due to US embargo. What were they thinking still using that thing?

An old 40 years old helicopter without proper maintenance and spare parts combined with bad weather and probably pilot errors, a catastrophe is obvious.
