I own one for nearly 3 months. Drove it like 2200 miles already and can
    provide first-hand impressions :) I have the 1.2 petrol, 90hp, manual
gearbox. It's sold without the "mild hybrid" in my country, which I
preferred. The positives: 1) The price of buying and using. Car is cheap
to buy and by far the best equipped for the price in it's class. Here
(Bulgaria) it comes with Nav system, rear-view cam, adaptive cruise
control and auto A/C at 13 500 euro. Only Skoda Rapid hatch offered
something close in equipment/price (it was still like 10-12% more
expensive), all other brands wanted way more money for these gadgets ;)
It's also cheap to run. The tax is small (guess it varies in other
countries). Driving at 80-90 km/h on 2-lane roads gave me actual fuel
consumption of 4,0l/100km, which I find very impressive. On the highway,
driving 120-130km/h with A/C on full time, the consumption was
5,1l/100km, still very good. In the city it burns 6,0l/100km, which i
find reasonable. 2) Legroom. It has very good legroom for the back seat
passengers. I'm nearly 6'2" (187 cm to be precise) and my brother, who
is 6'0" can sit behind me without touching the back of driver's seat. I
went in several showrooms and tested the space in other models in
Segment B (the Supermini) like Skoda Fabia, Ford B-max, Hyundai i20
Active and even Mazda CX-3. All had less legroom at the back. I find
this very impressive and a strong selling point for the Baleno. (A note
here - the headroom at the back is OK, but not as impressive). 3) The
size. The car is very compact at a notch under 4m. I find this an
advantage in the city, especially when parking. (But it really NEEDS
it's rear-view camera, because the back-window is so high and so tight,
one can see nothing through it.) 4) Ease of use. The controls are
logical and simple enough, the touch-screen is not laggy (I have the
7-inch one), the adjustments of driving position and things like
brightness of the dash are more than adequate. I drove it at night
numerous times and find the headlights to be good. In all - I had no
trouble adapting from my previous car to the Baleno. The negatives so
far: 1) Used materials. The plastic in the cabin is hard and scratchy. I
already have some permanent scratches at the inside lower portion of
the driver's door from my shoes. And the other material I do not like is
the thin metal the whole exterior is made of. Alas - a weakness of most
modern cars in my opinion 2) Noise in the cabin at high speeds. The
Baleno is very light (about 950kg) and I believe some of the weight was
saved on noise insulation. It is not unbearable, don't get me wrong. But
I find 130-135 km/h to be the limit in terms of comfort, a subjective,
individual assessment, of course. (A note here - a lot of the noise is
made by the tires it comes with, a budget model by Bridgestone. So this
part is "improvable" by the user). As a conclusion - sorry for the long
post :) I tried to be objective. So far I do not regret choosing the
Baleno. Hope all this is helpful to anyone :)

The Baleno is a no nonsense car. It shines with awesome frugality, reliability and very easy serviceability. Average fuel consumption over 4000 km so far was 4.9L/100 km. Awesome car. I highly recommend it!

A good report, Autogefuehl! As a UK-based motoring journalist, who also created a video (the launch programme) for Suzuki, which you can find on You Tube, I became so enamoured by the car that I bought one! I can tolerate the plain appearance. I can live with the low-rent plastic trim (at least it wipes clean easily!). However, I love its 60mpg fuel economy and incredible speed potential...135mph (indicated) and 0-60mph in around 8.8 seconds....despite the very conservative claims by Suzuki. The engine is a gem and it works very well in the new S-Cross model too. In 1.4-litre form, in the Vitara S, it is more like a rally car for the road!

Good to know, thanks for the input, Suzuki makes no nonsens cars to take you reliable from A to B. They have good engines that will last, bad points is the plastic trim inside, the steel gets a dent in it just by watching it.Otherwise very reliable, I own a 1,8 Baleno GTX estate it will be 21 years in a week tim, I own it 14 years now and I am not going to sell it. I have a very relaible roomy car. Yes he drinks petrol like a Polak does beer or wodka but if that's the only complaint I am satisfied.

I purchased a suzuki alto in 2009 and it has 150 000km on the clock. For some reason that i cannot explain i am severely attached to this little car and i just do not want to give it away. It has never disappointed me, yet i never seem to take good care of it. What a small machine.

    • @mrjsv4935
      @mrjsv4935 Před 7 lety +1

Bought myself a Suzuki Alto in 2011, drove about 47.000km in 4,5 years and changed it to a Kia Rio in March this year. Alto was just too small car for me.
I think Rio is about the same size as this new Baleno.
Baleno isn't available here in Finland at least yet but even if it was, I'm happy with the Rio and plan to keep it for many years.
Having said that, the Baleno seems to be an ok everyday car for people that need just a basic, compact car to drive from A to B.
Oh and I'm just 176,5cm tall and haven't had any issues even with small cars like the Alto :D

Thanks Thomas! I kinda like this car. It may not be anything special, but the engine does sound nice and it does have a lot of options (like the navigation, safety systems etc.) that seem to work quite well. All together that makes for a fairly nice and comfortable car for a very decent price. And Suzuki usually builds good quality cars, as far as I know.
You may not make anyone jealous when you buy one, but you may quietly enjoy it for years! :-)

I'm glad he took it on the Autobahn.. often times these small cars are great around town, but crap on the highway. This Baleno looks like it can hold its own on the highway, which is great here in Australia, where we have mostly single-lane roads and must overtake a truck quickly if we don't want to die. Although it looks like it rides pretty rough at 100kmh. Oh BTW, the Suzuki official figures for the turbo state 0-100 in 11 sec, but every review I've seen they get 0-100 under 10 sec, and that's even for the auto.

The rapid centering of the steering wheel after you let it go is caused by the high caster angle of the suspension. In most sport/racing cars very high caster angles are used because it also helps with increasing camber in the corner (the contact of the tyre with the road when turned).

Rather impossible! I know that both Suzuki and Daewoo are making cars for General Motors because GM has stakes in both of them. However, for Suzuki to rebadge Daewoo as their own cars seems to be rather impossible. It might be GM to rebadge Daewoo's car. Chevy Flash is made by Daewoo for better labor cost and capacity. Not a bad car.

I think the EU should force car manufacturers to advertise what they got in the Euro Ncap tests. I think in this day & age its ridiculous not to get the maximum 5. This car & the FIAT Tipo both only got 3 stars in basic form. Even more scarier is that both were given 4 stars if you payd more money & got a higher spec version. I think crash test results are important & car companies shouldn't be able to do poorly & get away with it.

Thomas, I like your reviews. I am not getting tired to say that again and again!
I like the simple and good infotainment system of the car. I don' t like the middle console and the blue instruments designwise.
The styling of the exterieur reminds me also a little bit of the German word "Japan Barock".
With my old Peugeot 106 I had the same problem looking out the front window like you ;-)
What is really great is the light weight of the car!
What I really don't understand, Thomas, is: Why are you several times in the video saying this car was between the small car and the compact segment? With 4 meters in length it is exactly as long as a Citroën C3 or a Honda Jazz, 2 centimeters (one finger!) shorter than a VW Polo or a Peugeot 208 and 6 centimeters shorter than a Mazda 2. Aren't they all cars of the small car segment?

That for me was a little bit confusing in the video, because you said 4 meters in length and at the same time "somewhere between small and compact car".

When the Baleno first came out I thought 'I want one!'. I liked the looks, the small turbo engine & the low fuel consumption figures. I was truly ready to open my wallet! Then I took one for a test drive when I took my wife's Suzuki Celerio in for its service. Hmmm...after the Celerio, the cockpit felt cramped, like there's not enough space around you. Also, is it me but is the Celerio actually quieter? Lastly (and this was the final nail in the coffin) the steering wheel is IMO too off set. I had this in my old Corolla and you sort of have to shuffle your bum over and sit (uncomfortably) on the edge of the seat to get properly behind the wheel.
So I changed my mind and bought myself a Celerio instead and I think I made the right decision...

Another low segment car after the Mitsubishi Space Star, so I am happy! I am a huge low segment car fan. Why? Because the manufacturers are really pressed in that segment to give most for your Euro. I think building a good low segment car is far more challenging than a good expensive car. By the way, the Space Star is almost 150 kg lighter than the Baleno and not much smaller.... It also uses less fuel and is not prone to carbon build up in the inlet valves. So if I would chose the Baleno, I would go for the 1.2 normally aspirated engine.

I don't think that's th reason. The current British brands simply didn't make cars like that. Rover in the past did and some others did as well. However, they simply didn't survive (and actually, all the others were acquired by others as well).

    • @djoetma
      @djoetma Před 7 lety

***** Did the others survive? Or did were they just interesting for other players that want to have a stake in the concerning segment and was that the reason they were taken over?
Further, it's also a matter of competition. How many Japanese cars do we see in Europe? Not that many. Why? Because they European competitors are stronger. Same happened with Rover.
Rover was a general/mainstream brand. They did nothing others couldn't make as well. But Rovers were certainly no bad cars. Especially when they were based on Honda's. It's not that they can't make these cars. Opel makes these cars as well, and they are not known as well made cars. The VAG cars all have problems with the downsized engines. Yet Opel as well as VAG are selling really well.
