    ALWAYS USE HIGH OCTANE FUEL WITH NO ETHANOL TO PREVENT DAMAGE AND COSTLY CARBURETOR REPAIRS ON YOUR SNOWBLOWER!

    • @TripReviews
      @TripReviews Před 3 lety +18

      donyboy73 I learned that the expensive way! 25 hp Johnson outboard 2 stroke. Bought new in 2005 it was at the 3 years old age but always used fuel stabilizer, winterized it properly in the fall. Because I used regular fuel with ethanol I ended up having to have the carb rebuilt and some other cleaning up of the fuel system. Of course this was after I had tried my back yard mechanic skills on it so it cost me a few more bucks than it would have if I hadnt🤬. So the mechanic explained it this way, it’s not like your car where you drive it daily, with an outboard you get your gas, it sits partly empty, the air temperature gets cool then it gets hot out. Condensation develops and it gets in your gas then messes up your carb and runs like #$&. I replied I use conditioner, he said doesn’t matter the conditioner absorbs the water but it’s still there in the gas tank or in your gas can. Buy shell premium fuel as it has no ethal alcohol in it (Ontario Canada.) The boat is long gone now but ever since only buy the non ethanol fuel for my snow blower and lawn mower now that I know better.

      @@TripReviews "... it’s not like your car where you drive it daily,..."
      Even in your car, you should NEVER use "regular" gas, if it has up to 10% ethanol in it. That shit just builds up carbon over time on your valves and makes small buildup on injectors, and just generally clogs everything up and makes a mess. Ethanol should be banned for blending in gas (and in some places in the US, it is, thanks to SEMA). They use it pretty much everywhere in Canada. You need to get Super, to have 0% ethanol in it.

      @@DarkpawTheWolf they sell premium here in Canada with ethanol in it. You have to search for a station that specifically says non ethanol 91. Everything below or above 91 has ethanol too though. So people buy 93 or 94 thinking it’s even better but it’s worse in anything with a carb. I’m starting to think it’s on purpose to screw up everyone’s small engines enough to force people to consider electric small power equipment.

    My parents gave me a snowblower that had been sitting in their garage for a few years (with old gas still in it), and when I fired it up it was surging and would only run with the choke fully on. I disassembled the carburetor and followed all of your steps and it is now running perfectly (I removed my carb and did the work on my bench). All of the gas in the carb was dark yellow and that little brass screw under the plastic cap was totally clogged. I have a set of micro drill bits but I couldn't free the clog by hand so I had to use my drill press to get through the crud! We have a blizzard coming this weekend and now I'm ready. Thank you very much for your time in making this awesome video!

    I have to say in all the years working on machines just changing the spark plug has never fixed any issue.
    The jet at 12:15 is the low speed idle jet for those watching that do not know, it is just about always this jet that becomes clogged, or the idle circuit within the the carburetor body itself. Some times they can be an absolute bear. Terrible design that affects just about every tecuntseh motor out there. You have to pass a single strand of copper wire through the idle circuit holes in the carb, and run them through an ultrasonic cleaner most of the time. If that does not work, some times an older machine just needs a bit more gas to idle. Since the low speed idle jet is not adjustable (on the model you show) the idle jet can be drilled out slightly with a micro drill

    A perfect repair method for surging carb, except for one thing.... You must clean the low speed jet and circuit with carb cleaner and straw with the bowl cover off. A lot of dirt will sometimes migrate during the low speed circuit cleaning, into the bowl, re-clogging the main jet. The smaller orifice in the low speed jet is a #78 drill bit.

      Might have been one of the older toro mowers that had an auto full throttle setup, where as soon as it started up it reved itself up until it bounced off the limiter, continuously. Only way to keep it from doing the up down,
      up down was to put it under load mowing and then it would stay off the limiter and stop bouncing up down. Very annoying when your mowing short grass and can’t put enough load on the engine to keep it from bouncing off the limiter. They had the same setup on small snowblowers.

    Another quick tip is to tilt the machine so that any dirt and water go to the lowest point in the fuel tank, then use a small hose to siphon out the dirt and water. Use a flashlight to light up the inside of the fuel tank so that you can see exactly where the dirt and water are at the bottom. Do the same to your gas cans and gas containers.

    Another GREAT video!!! Thank you!
    I use ethanol-free gas with my Ariens snowblower and after every use, I drain the gas from the carburetor bowl via the drain bolt on the bowl.
    The new carburetor bowl you installed(which did not come with the kit) did not have the extra drain bolt used for draining fuel from the bowl.
    1) Why didn't you reinstall the old bowl?
    I would think being able to easily drain the gas from the bowl an easy and important step to help keep the machine from having fuel issues.
    2) Am I correct?
    That machine did not have a fuel shut off valve but vise grips could be used to pinch the fuel line so one could drain the bowl. (or one could install a shut off valve)
    From what I saw, the problem of the surging might have been solved by just cleaning the jets without a carb rebuild. For the average Joe like me, I would have cleaned the 2 jets before doing a rebuild.
    3) Is that a common sense thing to do?

      I have a 1990s Ariens with similar engine. It has a fuel shutoff. But after shutting it and running 'dry,' there is still a bit of gasoline in the bottom of the carb. My Tecumseh carb has a "dump valve" and I always get a few CCs of gas out after the engine runs dry. I always drain the dump valve when emptying the carb. During summer, I empty everything included the tank, lines, etc.

    Very well produced video, only would add a few suggestions. Should clean area around the idle jet before removing to prevent debris from entering, plus spray cleaner through the idle jet passage while it's removed. While the bowls off it's a good idea remove the main and pilot jets for cleaning if equipped. Also, Honda carbs main tube has many tiny holes through the length that get restricted. I'm probably too meticulous to make money doing small engine repairs as I tend to leave no stone unturned.

    • @jackpatteeuw9244
      @jackpatteeuw9244 Před 4 lety +1

      Not likely.
      My experience with single cylinder engines with similar carbs, the surging is caused by a clogged primary/idle jet (the second one that Dan cleaned). This jet need to pass fuel all of the time, even at full throttle. If not, the engine runs too lean, stumbles and then the governor catches it before it dies completely and over revs the the engine. The secondary/high speed jet (bowl nut) and/or the emulsion tube are rarely the culprit.
      The real problem is, for many years, the primary/idle jet has not NOT accessible. The only way to clean it is to disassemble the carburetor and soak it in a bucket of cleaner or better yet an ultrasonic cleaner.
