I like that they show Rhaenyra as hesitant and not a full blown aggressive queen, makes her more relatable.
I think it's her inner Vicerys. And that correlates with her being crowned with Vicerys' crown, the crown of peace, versus Aegon wearing the conquerors crown.
This series is not about relating to political players. I mean look at ned. I for one would of liked her being perceived like in the books.
I'm not team green but I also gotta commend alicent for doing the same also. Let's not forget Otto and the rest of the council wanting rhaenyra and her family dead but alicent was against that.

The whole point of the birthing scenes is to show how the birthing bed is a woman's battleground. This one was especially good in how it was contrasted back and forth with Daemon frantically preparing for war.
I think these scenes are just as if not more compelling than the battle scenes
@@whateverdoesntmatter9868 I think that's one of the themes of this show. Men fight their battles... well, on the battlefield and women fight theirs in labor.
Agreed, it's great symbolism and a great way to compare how people fought their battles back in this sort of era.
I haven't seen any show or movie make me feel this way about pregnancy and birth. It is gross, disgusting and painful for the mothers. The writers intended for us to feel uncomfortable and I definitely felt that, but I also felt sympathy for the mothers. That's a hard balance.
Cutting Joffrey's birth would result in showing three deadly labours and no succesful one.
Honestly, as a book reader, I was dissapointed they did not show that much of mourning. It is impied that Rhaenyra wanted to have a daughter, and the fact she gave her stillborn daughter a name supports it. I wanted her to be able to have one scene in which she would cry over the fact she wanted Visenya for so long... even more, that she wanted to show her to Viserys... perhaps with Daemon. It would also make their argument better in my opinion. For example Daemon claiming that greens must pay for their daughter's death and Rhaenyra wondering if he truly cares or if it's just an excuse for murders.
If David Benioff wrote the season finale,

Crazy to remember all the hate she and alicents new actor got when they took over for their younger counterparts
I thought she was already strong in episodes 6, 7 and 8 but this episode cemented her as the perfect casting choice and when she wore that crown, she looked so much like Viserys

I think one of the important implications about the Song of Ice and Fire scene was that Daemon didn’t know. In that moment both him and Rhyenera realized that Daemon was never ever truly an heir trusted with the family secret
Also I think the fact that Viserys told Rhaenyra immediately upon swearing her in shows how dedicated he was to his decision.

All those who knew or might have known (Rhaenyra, Daemon, maybe Jacaerys if Rhaenyra had time to tell him) die before they get the chance to pass it on to the next potential heir. Even then, the prophecy lingers (at least in the books) because Rhaegar is said to have had some knowledge of it ("the prince that was promised" and all that). Maybe the Targaryen dreamers had similar dreams to Aegon I?
I absolutely loved the final, because in very few pivotal scenes they gave Aemond great characterization, he's an asshole but he's not cruel for the sake of being cruel, he wanted to hurt Luke but not to kill him, and he realized that he started the war, he killed his nephew (which made him a kinslayer) and more subtle he also understood that the dragons are no pets and can't be controlled if they go loose.
Plus, kudos to the actor that managed to transmit those emotions without saying anything, just the shock on his face was enough
In the books the biases painted Aemond as an asshole easy to anger and slow to forgive (I mean, they actually painted it that way, he was still seeking vengeance for his eye afterall, even if he said in the past that claiming Vhaegar was a fair price), and not very brillant for this. But what they done in the series is absolutely better than a stereotypical villain like Joffrey was.
Hes just an inherently more interesting character here. Others are fine as well but most of them really dont get such a complex background, so to me Aemond is one of if not the most interesting character of the show.
Also the actor who plays him is freaking great and absolutely terrifying
Name one other show where the villain is a spoiled fifteen year old king and I might agree with you. So far I don’t think Joffrey was a stereotypical villain, he was just an asshole in power raised by a bitch in power. Marvellous character he was.
The only stereotypical villain was the Night king. He was a very black-and-white destructive character lacking a clear motivation and depth.

Stereotypical doesn't mean that he's a copy paste of some other villain.
Yes, the Night King was even more stereotypical than Joffrey, but also Joffrey was cruel for the sake of being cruel, there was no other redeeming quality for him, no developement in his character, he was just there doing shit and being hated for this, without any real developement, while other villains in the series were more nuanced, they developed the reason for what they did, while he was just there throwing tantrums between evil acts, even the ones he wasn't responsible for (like when he said he wanted to serve the head of Robb Stark as a wedding gift to Sansa)
It's not a fault on the actor (Jack Gleeson was amazing, only praise for him), but this is how I feel about Joffrey, he started bad and ended bad, but even his bad didn't escalated in something more, he was a full-developed asshole with under developed background from start to finish

As a book reader, I was mad at it because things went in the complete opposite way. But now I kinda like the direction the writers have taken. It's was a great finale and the dragons already started their dance. And please can we give more credit to Ramin Djawadi for such a brilliant composition. Without his work the world of GoT wouldn't have had such an impact. He's a G 🙌🏾🧡

I read the book too and it’s not really different… George R R Martin said himself, the maester who has written down the story isn’t always to be trusted and since he wasn’t always there and a lot things were written down from hearing about it or rumours the book is not always accurate
The books are 2nd and 3rd hand accounts of what happened, the show gives you a look into what actually happened with the characters and how they felt.

In terms of the song of ice and fire. I think the only reason that it feels forced to us is we know that the night king did nothing in S8. If we take away that knowledge, I think its fucking awesome that the Targs have the song as an ulterior motive that determines their actions and ruling methods rather than them just being power hungry
Some people seem to forget that magic and prophecy is an important aspect in A Song of Ice and Fire, because that's one of George's themes, who is working on HOTD. In Game of Thrones the show on the other hand, D&D didn't care about magic and prophecy because they felt it didn't appeal to the masses. So I feel that bringing the prophecy back is George leaving behind the atrocity that D&D created, getting back on track.

Honestly I’m glad the birth scenes are here. We hear ALL the time about birthright and the importance of creating heirs and so much of the focus of this has been put on the men in the story of Game of Thrones while the women are treated more as a vessel for the men to act on (to the point where Daenerys, one of the single most important characters in the show, not being able to have another child, thus an heir by blood, is basically just offhandedly acknowledged one time 7 seasons later).
So I’m glad to see HoTD giving credit where credits due and showing the women’s perspective on that part and showing the struggle they have to go through to bring these characters into the story. Also given this world doesn’t really have a bunch of warrior women characters it’s important to illustrate what the franchise has referred to as “the woman’s battlefield”, that being the birthing bed. Daemon gets all these badass moments as a warrior, it seems only fair that Rheanyra get some badass moments of being a mother. It also makes it feel more grounded and authentic to acknowledge at this time that birth is actually incredibly dangerous and these mothers are being incredibly brave by genuinely putting their life on the line over and over again to have children.
completely agree! It's a brave choice and the right one, people will cheer at people getting stabbed in the head and violence but a few birthing scenes and people feel uncomfortable. It's how we all ended up here everyone! I think this show as you said does a fabulous job on showing a spotlight on the danger all people in history have faced be it war or childbirth ( or sickness in Visery's instance poor guy.) Feels good as a woman to see a show presenting the sacrifice and danger a woman puts herself in to have children.
I personally have been SO delighted by the birth scenes! All so different, yet equally raw, emotional, and powerful. Our main characters are women and not showing us these life-changing labors of theirs would be injustice to the characters. I'm personally quite tired of battle sequences and this change of perspective has been so very welcome. 👏

I remember when the episode was leaked on Friday and everyone on Twitter was claiming that the episode “ruined” the show, and I was terrified to watch it.
Then the episode came out and I realised that all those complaints were massively blown out of proportion and vocalised by a very small minority of the fanbase 😂

Yep. I remember fighting with a bunch of Daemon fangirls that were claiming he was ruined for choking Rhaenyra 🤣 the guy is cool af and all. I like him very much, but he is flawed and they refuse to accept their fave can be problematic. On the other hand we had a bunch of edgys crying bc their edgelord Aemond is not a fully psychopath (yet) and can actually feel remorse for fucking it up with Lucerys.

Daemon singing a lullaby when he approaches Vermithor, presumably to keep him as calm as possible, was an amazing way of showing how dangerous they really are.

Hopefully the success of the first season will make the suits amplify the budget allowing for epic battle sequences as the war escalates. Similarly, I hope the writers don’t get lazy if they get a strong budget and over rely on battles because the writing was compelling and is something they should feel pride for.
I also hope they don't reduce the politicking the way Dumbarse & Dipsh*t did, just to make way for spectacle- a major part of the war was focused on them gaining allies- & we're now expanding the world, as Jace goes to the Vale, the Riverlands & North.
I would **love** to see White Harbour- don't mistake me; I'm hyped as hell for Winterfell & the Starks, but I've always wanted to see what 'the North's only city' gets to look like- given I loved the book description we got...
I don't want epic battles. I want clever writing ABOVE ALL.
I know, that budget needs doubling, or tripling tbh. SO MUCH MORE is happening next season, and I don't want for all the budget to go to the battle sequences. I still want for the costume design to look eyegasmic, for the locations to be gorgeous, for multiple units to be shooting simultaneously. I want the show to still retain all of its good qualities in addition to the "very expensive and VFX heavy" sequences which are, not for purposes of exaggeration, integral parts of the story.

I'm curious just _how many_ units they will split into, because the war was *all over the place* with its' multiple theatres, & a ton of interesting events & **fascinating** characters - there was very little in the way of neat division in this conflict; the Reach in particular was split- which I found interesting - hell, even Hightower's _own bannermen_ took different sides (you can guess House Beesbury wasn't keen to fight under the people who'd murdered a loyal old man of their house...) - & there's also a kinsman to a certain present-day GoT figure, who'd recently married into the Hightowers- but her family were on the opposite side, & she has conflicting loyalties {I'm wondering how/ if they'll address her later issues with her stepson...} - & the Tyrells who remained neutral for most of the war.
Then there's the Riverlands, probably the heaviest area of fighting - the Vale- which was already dealing with its' own problems before the war kicked off, & was basically the conflict in microsome; Jeyne's succession crises would persist even after the Dance was over - the journey of the Northmen, 'the Winter Wolves' under Dustin- after Cregan & Jace agree the Pact of Ice & Fire - the loose alliance of the Red Kraken to the Blacks' cause (which again, becomes a problem once the Dance ends) - even foreign forces played a part.
I understand that some streamlining will need to occur, but this was a wild & messy conflict- with some strange intertwining of houses & individuals & loyalties - I kind of think they should depict that honestly.
I'm hyped to meet people like: the Lads, Black Aly- Dalton Greyjoy, & of course, the Starks of this time - I just want the compelling story I read in 'Fire & Blood', & I really don't think we deserve to get short-changed in this. They've had more than a couple of pacing issues with this first season, but they have the source material to guide them- it can't be that hard....
exactly i hope they will include/bring real warfare experts to the team bcz there is a lot wars and it must be realistic not just cinematic if they do this no doubt it is will be most memorable wars in TV history

honestly, the amount of birth scenes and the harsh depiction of them really helps the average viewer of the show, men, the amount of shit and pain and suffering women in those position had to go through. We can't even imagine what giving birth feels like. It also makes, in my eyes, the last scene more impactful because of that.
agreed, the struggles of women can be just as interesting as the struggles of men and as a man myself i find it really interesting how HotD shows these intense and personal moments, it makes the world feel even more real and i love it.
I think the interplay of the personal & the political is one of the more intriguing elements in this 'fantasy show'

I actually love the birth scenes. I re-watched the episode last night and cried all over again during that scene. I think including these scenes enhances the realism and pays homage to the bravery of these women and the sheer suffering they endure to produce heirs. Since we're splitting heads and biting dragons in half, the explicit birth scenes are right at home in this series.
The only negative thing about this show is the long ass wait for the next one :(
One more thing: Every time I am watching, I feel bad that HOT D creators didn't adapt A Song Of Ice and Fire into Game Of Thrones, and instead it was D&D.
7:25 I don’t think Daemon isn’t trying to tame Vermithor, the old King Jaeharys’ (probably butchered the spelling) dragon. I believe he’s singing to it in high Valyrian that it will have a rider again soon for the oncoming war as a dragon and dragon rider can only share 1 bond at a time and will become aggressive if anyone else tries to ride it

I haven’t read the book and I’m assuming that’s where the 1 bond at a time thing comes from. But even in the books dany has 3 dragons? Could say it’s because all the dragons “imprinted” on her at the same time. That’s the only thing I can think of

I think it's wrong to say a woman being choked was deserved. I do however think it suits Daemon's character because this is a man that groomed Rhaenyra from a young age. The choking was the build up of exhausted masculinity, jealousy for his wife's power, and the fear of losing it to the 'portents' of what he thinks is his brothers delirium
No it's in character but your reasons are senseless the show sets up the song of ice and fire as something that's passed from king to future king/queen and when Rhaenyra tells this to him he realizes Viserys never wanted him to be his successor also that Daemon just lost his brother and she's blabbing on about the song of ice and fire and forcing him not to fulfill his violent impulsive urges so he instead faces his violent urges to her and chokes her one thing we are shown is that he sees these dreams as delusions and weakness
The dragon fight scen felt like the final battle from how to train your dragon between toothless and the red death, nostalgic in a way.

Rhaenyra just lost her baby and father...then comes to Daemon to choke her. It's cruel even for him. She was probably still in pain after just giving birth to a dead child too💀

Daemon serenading Jaehaery's dragon was so epic
I love all scenes where daemon and rhaenyra speak high valyrian, especially together, and this lullaby was very beautiful
Rhaenyra's stillbirth scene also perfectly encapsulates the nature of being a women in this machiavellian patriarchal universe. Aemma was the one to tell her that the childbed is a woman's battlefield, and that she must learn to face it. So while she is battling for her life with her wetnurse's the men are around the table playing their game of thrones, a table she has always so desperately wanted to be at. It shows that even as Rhaenyra is about to claim herself as protector of the realm, the fact that she is a woman remains a hinderance on her political ambitions. The show is imbedded in a well-thought feminist framework no doubt.

I don’t think anyone deserves to be choked, no matter the circumstances. I think as viewers, we know Daemon is a loose cannon and has a history of treating women like objects. But, there’s really no room for saying Rhaenyra DESERVED to be choked. No one deserves abuse, man or woman.

Well the prince who was promised thing is very relevant even in house of the dragons since none of the Targaryens who gets told the prophecy actually know when the long night will happen, Rhaenyras probably thinks the prophecy is about her sons or maybe even about her. It also makes sense for Daemon to be mad at her for talking about prophecies and peace like she does, since it reminds him of Viserys, who was a weak king in his eyes.
I disagree that Vizzy T is a weak king. I think him being called Viserys the Peaceful was pretty accurate.
@@rahbeeuh He was weak at the start of the series. As his body grew weaker, his mind grew stronger. The pain built his fortitude and he became a firmer, more decisive ruler. (for example, his iconic throne room entrance scene)

@@rahbeeuh Yes he is not necessarily weak, but in Daemons mind he was weak when it came to conflict resolution. He did everything he could to make peace, even though the house and crown were at its most powerful, the stepstones as an example. Jaehaerys was also peaceful, but he was also firm, which is what made him so great.
He is an amazing character and def not weak minded.
I was truly skeptical about this series from how they ended GoT, which was a dumb way to go into it considering it’s all new writers and a new time period. But man I’ve been blown away from this first season. The drama, tension, acting, scenery and everything was done well. I can’t wait for season 2.

After a good, but sloppy, episode 9, this finale was absolutely incredible. It has me really excited for how future seasons are going to handle the dragon battles. Also, props to the young actor who played Lucerys. You could feel his fear during that scene in the hall at Storm's End.

I am so glad that at the beginning of the episode Daemon confronted Rhaenys as to why she did not kill Aegon and the Hightowers, because if that point was completely left out, I would have been pissed to the point where I would pass it on as d&d level writing.
Exactly. This scene eliminated the plot hole. Hence this show is 9/10 for me as of now. Missed one point because i wanted to see more of daemon and rhaenyra with their kids aegon and viserys. They could've gone slower with the time jumps.

This series has honestly rekindled my joy for GoT. Having come in with such low expectations after seasons 7-8, the writers for HoT are doing a great job capturing the feel of the earlier seasons in GoT, very much looking forward to what's next.
I don't know but I did like season 7, I know it wasn't as good as the earlier seasons but i like it more than seasons 5 and 6. Now 8, thats trash.

Actually, the prophecy was inherently important in this episode. Rhaenyra learned, that despite being heir for years, Viserys NEVER told Daemon. He neve really thought Daemon would succeed him. We know from the previous episode that he never cared much for Aegon and clearly never told him either.
Any doubts she had that her father wanted her as his successor are gone.

Daemon is my favorite character and everything but i don't agree that Rhaenyra deserved to be choked by her husband, dude. Not after a traumatizing childbirth that ended in the death of said child. It's not her fault Viserys didn't tell Daemon about the Song. She thought Daemon knew. That said, given thr context of the situation, Daemon is also under a lot of stress as well and I DO agree that him choking her is very much in line with his character.

And Tempers and Feelings are definitely up on both. Daemon lost his Brother whom for all their Difference he loved and their Child. Same for Rhaenyra and she has the added Struggle of being Queen now. If that Situation wouldn’t make People overreact i don’t know what would.

I agree. Saying she "deserved it" had me immediately click off the video. As a woman who has been strangled by an abusive ex it was a gut punch to hear someone say that on a channel I've watched frequently. This guy usually has very insightful commentary, but this was ridiculous and very disturbing.

7:53 For me it appeared that it drew parallel to the dragon & Damon. As he was calming and taming the dragon , he is also soothing his own fire for war and taming his own beast with the same song. Damon encapsulates and extenuates the element of fire brilliantly.
I am typically cynical, so going into this show i had very dulled expectations...
But man... this is how you fucking do it. Everything we as an audience needed, they gave us.

They are setting up this Song of Ice and Fire storyarch as a nod to George R.R. Martin´s Winds of Winter being hopefully released soon. At least it seems to me that, that is the case here.

The shot of Lucerys looking at Vhagar when he landed at Storm's End reminded me of when the T.Rex first appeared in Jurassic Park.
Also, on the topic of the birth scenes in HotD, I actually quite like how many there. A lot of Targaryen women have made the parallel between birthing and fighting, Aemma Arryn in the show for one, as well as Viserys' and Damon's mother in the books. In GoT and HoTD to a lesser extent we see characters sword fighting often, murdering each other, which in this world is a man's thing to do primarily. It's one of the most dangerous things they can do and often is a way to demonstrate and 'earn' their manhood. Birthing is a woman's thing to do in the ASoIF universe, so I find it actually cool to see how hard and often times scary birth can be on screen. This show really centers some female characters who have many kids, so it'd honestly be kind of weird to omit such a big event that often threatens their life from the show.

Rhaenyra understands that it's important for the Targaryens and their bloodline to keep ruling to ensure the prince that is promised will come and save the world. There's a bigger picture to the Iron throne that only rhaenyra understands.
And as someone else said- Daemon never knowing of it, solidifies Rhaenyra's realisation that she was always *meant* to be her father's heir- that realisation has taken away any doubts she had...

However I do love complexity of characters. On the thin line between good and evil. Between hate and love. Between supporting them and wanting to see them be defeated.
I think there are so many birthing scenes bc it’s so much more woman based storytelling. A woman’s role as a mother versus her role as a queen, dedication to her children vs dedication to her people. That’s how I see it at least.
What you seem to be forgetting is aegons dream was not just to kill the white walkers it was also to unite the realm for that fight, this is why its so important to rhaenyra when she hesitates about going to war, I think youre letting your bias overshadow what's actually been said in the episodes

This behavior is unacceptable regardless of how much you like the perpetrator.
In defense of the birth scenes, motherhood and the importance offspring are critical themes to the show. HotD is ultimately a beef between two moms, after all. Seeing the births, which are all jarring to watch, helps us appreciate these themes without having to shoehorn them in via dialogue or unnecesssry filler.
I really like the prophecy stuff. I'm thinking of it in the context of George's books and lore though, not GOT.

I knew luce was gonna die but damn...watching it was heartbreaking. Seeing Rheanyra making him promise not to fight, knowing it was going to be the last time she ever saw her son alive...chills.
love the show, but the final two episodes are weirdly tagged on. viserys' death would have been the natural end to season 1, and was the definitive high point of the season. aegon's coronation would have made a good episode 1 of season 2. and they would have easily had enough options to stretch the 8 episodes to 10, as the pace was occasionally very perceptably hurried, and the time jumps were jarring. it also would have probably been good to establish queen aemma as a character before killing her, given that viserys' love for her is supposed to be so important. episode 8 was the most final of the season with episode 9 also having a somewhat final character, and episode 10 lacking it entirely (it cuts off the beginning of a new chapter of the story).
I think the placing of the season cut is my only major complaint. the other ones are minor, like how daemon 100% ought to have contracted greyscale from the crabfeeder, given how he killed him, or that everyone was acting very irrationally for dramatic effect when rhaenys crashed aegon's coronation.
Then the storm broke, and the dragons danced.
The scenes with Vermithor and Vhagar were phernomenal. The scale of those dragons God DAMN.
