  • Every backpacker and backcountry hunter is looking to shave weight off their pack any way they can, but is it possible to knock 2-3 pounds off your total pack load just by changing your rifle? And if you decide to buy an ultralight rifle, how do you choose the best hunting rifle for your backcountry needs? After a ton of research, I landed on the Savage 110 Ultralight in 6.5 Creedmoor as the perfect backcountry weapon for me. I plan to hunt black bear and deer with it, and this will be the perfect rifle for those pursuits.
This is Part 1 of the build, so be sure to subscribe and see how the whole project comes together!

Awesome choice. I did a shit ton of research when i made my decision.
I chose the 6.5prc. Allot more punch little bit more recoil. And a titanium break. Its very mild
I chose the same rifle scope as well. Kinda funny how it worked. Got my first speed goat with this set up.

Carbon barrels build up heat fast because of the very thin steel bore, and trap it under the carbon wrap. Quality steel barrels that are stress relieved don’t walk after heating up and more durable than carbon fiber barrels. To each his own! I have half dozen or more savages and they all shoot but I have really grown to hate that trigger.

Not to mention the enormous n thick 110 action. Idk why savage hasn't made a better lighter action for there top tier. They just slap a good barrel an stock on that stupid action then charge a premium for it. The savage are OK but I'd buy a howa over the savage every time

Wow. Excellent video. Thank you for taking the time to share with us with your thoughtful, entertaining and practical video. You poured a lot of great info into a short period of time. I dig your energy and “easy to listen” communication style. I too think about shaving weight often. Great job on the build. I hope it is as accurate as it is lightweight and “Purdy”. God bless you and your family.

Great video, I was doing the same myself this year. I'm late to hunting too, but I've been into firearms way longer so it was just a merging of hobbies. The Savage is a screaming deal, I ended up going custom this time though. Its not the first time I had a rifle built looking for the perfect backcountry gun (live and learn), and I'm really pleased how it came out this time.

I also have a Savage 110 Ultralight, but I have mine chambered in .30-06. It is an absolute TACK DRIVER! I set mine up to be a sheep/ backpacking only gun and it turned out perfect.
It has a Leupold VX3HD 2.5-8x36 CDS-ZL2 on it mounted using Talley Lightweight Alloy Mounts. I replaced the stock with a Boyd’s Spike Camp stock that I bedded the action into and also bedded a Spartan Precision Javelin Bipod Gunsmith adapter right in from of the front action screw. I am using an Area 419 Sidewinder brake on it while my silencer is in jail. With the brake on it, it weighs 7 lbs. 10 oz.
Some people may wonder why would I put a “heavier” laminated wood stock on it. Yes; it gained 3 ounces by putting the Boyd’s Spike Camp stock on it, but the rigidity and ergonomics are so worth it.
I am so happy with how it turned out for me and I hope you enjoy yours as much as I do with mine.

I just picked up one of these outstanding rifles. When I matched it with Hornady 308, 178 grain ELDX its sub MOA and its still super accurate with a cold bore.
Carrying it into the backcountry was a night and day difference to the classic Winchester model 70. I think I came in with a 40% weight reduction for the whole system, but an absurd improvement in capabilities.
I also used the DNZ mount to put a Vortex Viper on it.
Put it all together for less than $2000

I just built a firearm for this purpose. Here’s the recipe
    Defiance Anti LA Mag 1360
Proof CF 7mm Rem Mag 752
Red Hawk BDL bottom metal. 208
    TriggerTech set @ 1.5 lbs 175
    Mess Altitude CF stock 575
It’s weighing at 6.2 lbs. for the rifle.
    Add Arken rings @ 65 and a Leupold VX 5 HD 3-15x44 @ 900
    Arca rail 95
$4135 invested. Scoped and out the door weight is 7.75 lbs.
Ok as to money here’s my learning curve. Buy a factory gun- upgrade stock then trigger then have action squared and upgrade barrel. Now you’re accumulated the same financial outlay but you STILL have a factory action.
With most custom actions the tolerances are so tight that barrel makers can build pre fit barrels that will headspace perfectly. This means you don’t have to pay for an action job at around $250 and a gunsmith $400 to cut your chamber and threads and headspace it. Because once you’re opened the factory threads by recutting them you can no longer use prefits. You’ve just locked yourself into the gunsmith route forever.
Here’s where you save money- on your next caliber. You don’t have to buy an entire another gun you simply buy another prefit barrel in another caliber. It takes 5 minutes to swap out barrels and you are still shooting the same setup you’re used to with the first caliber.
My next caliber will be the 6.5 PRC and the gun will be the same components with just a different caliber.
Now you don’t need 2 actions, stocks, triggers and bottom metal, scopes and rings. I watch for the annual sales and will grab a Proof barrel at about $750
So now I’m still a one gun guy. Just two barrels! That’s not cheating right?
The heart of this build is the Defiance Anti as it only weighs 23 ounces which is a full 13 less than most custom actions out there. The CF barrel shaves a pound as does the CF stock.
I put it together in my garage with a barrel vice, action wrench and headspace gages.

I bought that 110 ultra light for the same reasons. But I got it in 3006 I put a bergara muzzle break on it to help with the recoil because I hand loaded it shooting just a bit under 3100 FPS. It’s shooting 1/2 3/4 Moa out to 600. Groups don’t open up because of heat till the 5th consecutive shot Good video!!!!!

When you started, I was thinking just get a Savage Ultralite. I have two, both with Leupold 2-10 vx5 cds- 2. I find 10x is plenty for hunting distances. You know the screw size for the mounts has to be 8-40 I think, different from a regular 110? I used Leupold Backcountry 2 piece mounts, worked perfectly, very lightweight. Love the rifles, good luck with yours!

How do you hunt with a brake? Are you forced to quickly put on hearing protection before the shot? I have shot a brake a couple of times without hearing protection while hunting and am still paying for it. Looking for a good option for quick ear protection while hunting. What if you jump a buck or elk?

    • @LatetotheGameOutdoors
      @LatetotheGameOutdoors  Před rokem

Honestly, it's a risk I run. I typically keep those ear plugs with the hard plastic "collar" around my neck. Then, in theory, it's just 5 extra seconds to put them in place. If I jump something, I'm just gonna mess up my hearing. That being said, obviously all calibers are not created equal when it comes to volume. I've been around a 6.5 Creedmoor with a brake without hearing protection several times and it wasn't even an issue...the .300 WSM on the other hand would be felt for a long time.
