I didn't feel good about my latest piece of 3D art. I bit off way more than I could chew and ultimately had to lower the bar in order to complete the project. Alot of the process felt like a grind, and I was happy to be done with the art. So in this video i'm digging into what went wrong, and how you can avoid a few critical mistakes I made while creating my art.
I also get into some tips and tricks that helped me through the project as well when time got short. Feel free to leave a comment below. I'd love to know your thoughts on this one.

Man, ambition it surely is dangerous, cold headed decisions are the most important when you work with passion.
Ambition surely is dangerous, but you absolutely need it if you wanna push yourself to the next level. Calculated ambition is the way to go!
@@ZeusCreates Love your take on Ambition, maybe i'm more of a safe person than i thought !
@@ZeusCreates nice seeing you here bhai hahaha
It's why collaboration is so important. As an example: Empire strikes back, lots of collab. The Phantom Menace, almost zero collab. I have partners on projects I know will reign me in when needed.
the lighting in your commentary shot is incredible, great vid!
Hey thanks!! I did a breakdown on my Patreon of that lighting setup too hahahah (if ur into that kinda stuff)
@@pwnisher absolutely am, will take a peek!
@@pwnisher if it helps, this one and the car racer were easily my favorites out of the whole montage (with the 5th place finisher a close second/third. The transition from the first to the second was super cool, but yeah the cockpit pilot were my favorites, incredibly awesome
For the alternate reality challenge, I've had a hard time linking the character animation to a custom character as I had no previous experience in it, and the linking went bonkers after multiple attempts, so I couldn't participate in it.
For the infinite journeys challenge, I've had the entire idea from day 1 itself. So, the concept art and basic blocking part was easy. A "28 days later" like scenario where the survivor is travelling to a safe space in memory of his family.
But in the following days, I've had lost faith in my skills as many of my personal projects had to be abandoned due to one issue or another. But the discord community helped me a lot as I've seen many attempting to do just for learning. On the last week, I did the basic modelling but had to remove many key things due to time constraints. The end result was very different from what I've imagined at the first stage. On the last day, I've left the project to render all the frames and went to sleep, but it had crashed midway. Even though I couldn't complete it on time, I've had the satisfaction of finishing a project for a competition.
I'll make sure to improve upon this, and finish on time on the next challenge.
This is incredible to read!! Congratulations for finishing a longer-term project! That’s huge! We’ll definitely see you on the next one :)
Same here, I am not an animator and transferring motion and poses from one armature to the next is a puzzling nightmare.
I am using blender, btw.
@@pwnisher Can you give tips on where to find a community challenge ?, I want to find them to challenge myself more so I can improve it (do know though that I'm still a bit newbie and only decent in modeling and sculpting so far)
@@royaldarkness8453 you could find them on his discord community.
Your finished product was beautiful and gloriously retro-futuristic.
You are the backbone of 3D graphic art community now.
he has been for a while now
For the record, the time shows in the final product. Loved the others and so on, but this one has stuck with me, because I've felt the speed. It's not an easy thing to capture, yet you did just that.
Many thanks! 🙏🏼
I enjoy every aspect of my work flow but I still haven't found my strongest skill or unique style, I think I need to just continue creating.
Our art style is the combination of all style we like
Agreed with byteow. Be inspired!
I feel like all my Ideas are very ambitious, and as a fairly new 3D artist, it is both mý skill and time (for your weekly challenges) that cause me to dumb down the original idea I had. I see the other entries and marvel at what I would be able to do one day. And I learn something new with every challenge. It may not be worth a like or mention, but i can see with every week how I get better, even if just incrimentally at this point. Thank you so much for this video and the community you started. I an happy to be part of it.
So cool to hear your side of things! Just keep having fun and you’ll go far!
From the Infinite Journeys animation, I learnt a few things: Some of the pitfalls of using Blender's Linking system and things to watch out for there; the importance of Applying Scale and Rotation to models before finalising them; and I also learnt that I too can be too ambitious with my Projects and I need to dial my ambition back a bit too to get my animation completed.
Thanks for sharing Clint! Great to see that you learnt some really good stuff through this experience. :)
Yeah, I learned those on the Dynamic Machines one. Very important tips!
A wonderful final art piece, and such a relatable and informative breakdown. I love that you go into the emotions and struggles of making something, it's motivation to keep working.
how nice it is to watch your projects and your experience, I grow up watching your lessons,
you are very motivating
thank you bro!
all of us relate to this, your video is extremely useful and so well produced!
Thank you for making this!
Thanks Clint, really needed to watch this, I'm coming off my 3rd back to back "I've bitten off more than I can chew" projects and I swear it shaves years off my life... I hope you get a chance to recoup now, the render looks amazing so it's interesting to see where you set the bar and what kind of taskmaster you are to yourself. Be kind to yourself, we love what you do.
Really enjoyed the whole video.
it is amazing and the hard work pays off. The greater the passion the greater unexpected works can be done ❤
Honestly love these videos! They inspire me so much as someone who is in their first year of 3D rendering.
It's crazy how relateable this experience is. I do this all the time in my work, and it holds me back a lot! I think it's what happens when you want to really have an impact, and are incredibly passionate about what you do. Still haven't figured out how to fix it, so will give your approach a try! Thanks for sharing your experience!
Oh man, I feel your pain.
I think I have hundreds of models and setups that I made detailed enough for close-ups, but only used for total shots...or even discarded in the end. Talk about spending your time the wrong way 👏🏼🤧😁
Jeeez man your videos are so genuine, much love
I love drawing, and I planned to go into a art college. I wanted to do animation because I wanted to do something that can relate to games, but I'm afraid that I might not have what it takes to do it. Been thinking about it a lot and was telling myself if I really like art, I was afraid that I might give up when it is hard. After watching this video, I can tell it isn't easy even though you love what you do. It's hard these past few months when I think about my future but at the end I decided to give it a shot. I'm going to a art college next month, and hopefully I can do well there.
Keep going Clint, your creations are beautiful
It's so wonderful to see real person behind the project. Problems, solutions, struggles .. This inspires me to go forward and challenge myself too. Thanks !
I am not a 3D artist, I am a graphic designer, but I absolutely feel what you share. I was in that situation not once but many times and it seems like I have not learnt much from it. I keep on make the same mistakes about my ambition, time management, procrastination, undervaluing the amount of work, the urge to make everything from scratch, ... I want to give my best work but it just makes me feel terrible.
I am glad that there is someone over there share some same thought with me, but I still have a lot to learn as a creative designer.
Thank you for sharing, Clint, mad love! Absolutely love your works and appreciate your effort to organize the challenges.
This was great man. Thanks for letting us into your process!! The final product was amazing, too. I'd also love to hear more about how you made those custom HUDs!
Dude, still a masterpiece! Love the real world experiential inspiration to your work!
Omg, I'm obsessed with your vibe. you should make more tutorials... please, and you're an inspiration. don't get down on yourself.
your project was seriously one of my favorite of the 3D challenge, might be my favorite
I recently pushed myself to create a detective noir short film, and by the end of it I felt it was nothing like I first envisioned it. After a week or so I’ve taken more feedback and looks at it to try and understand what didn’t cause an emotion with me. I think it was the pacing, and how it lost a lot of suspense because of the pacing speeding up.
But I’m happy to say I’m excited to try new tactics in my next projects, knowing what I did wrong because of this one.
Thanks for your inspiring video!
I needed to see this today Clint. Im preparing for the most important audition of my life and had these grand ideas of making my own choreography to perform. I think instead of working til the last minute to make something workable, I should just learn something pre-existing until it looks amazing. You may have just saved my life with this one bro, thanks ❤️
It's so crazy to me that u made this video because I'm currently in the middle of a very ambitious project myself, and I'm starting to take a step back and assess exactly what is necessary for the final piece. Thank you for the great vibes and awesome video as always! (:
Hey i’m glad you can take something from it :)
Thank you so much for uploading this vid dude 🙏!!
Clint, I love this kind of content. You have a way of engaging all of us that feels so easygoing, while giving us REAL knowledge and entertainment at the same time. Keep doing what your doing, your ambition will take you to the moon!
You've come a long way Clint. Congrats to you and all the participants
Man, I do this all the time... I'm doing it right now... Learning to walk that line between seeing your artistic vision come to life and waaaay overdoing it is a skill all it's own. I appreciate you making a video about it.
This is so BAD ASS! Your work and talent is AMAZING!
Wow, Clinton! It was very impressive and inspirational! Thank you for this awesome job!
Your videos are so inspiring, keep up the good work.
So much excited for the newer challenge cant wait
WOW! Incredible work. Well well well ambition can be your greatest downfall or upside, went through that last week and I don't like that feeling. So you are right, start small and then go big if you have the time. Thank you, Clint, for your videos, hope one day I will show you my project scene.
When i saw your video I was mind blown, you really outdid yourself!!
Amazing video man, a lot us procrastinate from time to time but with your video I’ve learned that we have to make every second count while working on a protect with a date to fulfill, it has taught me something very valuable, thanks 😊
whenever I am having trouble with inspiration I watch these videos thank you again!
Honesty = clarity. You did an awesome render. Woods from the trees man 🙂
Thanks for sharing man. I tend to underestimate how much time I need for projects too and this was really helpful.
There's so many lesson's learned here, even personal ones - and that's not something too many people show these days. Honestly, thanks for this video 😀
MAN YOU AND ALL THOSE 3d ARTISTS ARE EXTREMELY UNDERRATED MAN. STUFF LIKE THESE REQUIRE EXTREMELY GOOD KNOWLEDGE OF EVERYTHING AND WHAT YOU ARE DOING AND HAVE TO SPEND A LOT OF MONEY. YOU ALSO HAVE TO USE YOUR BRAIN AND HAVE TO DO A LOT OF EXPERIMENTING AND PLANNING! HATS OF TO YOU AND EVERYBODY WHO HAS PURSUED THIS FIELD!
This is bigger than you realize. Obviously it applies to more than just 3D art or even art in general, but this is applicable and important to remember in all aspects of life. Thank you for the reminder, it's so easy to fall into these traps/patterns, even when we know better, and it just takes a little thought and recognition to save ourselves.
That said, you still pulled it out in the end and it was incredible. Not just your entry, but the contest itself, the top 100 entries video, and all entries video. While I don't participate in any way, it's still amazingly fun, interesting, and inspiring to follow along with the journey
Such a crazy coincidence to see that you mentioned this during a project I'm doing that's due in 3 weeks from now. I have a lot of ideas and this is pretty ambitious for a little school project, but yeah definitely have to plan ahead what to do first and see how to reduce that time to achieve what I really want.
Modelling everything yourself does chew through time but helpful vid and the final is insane!
Looks incredible bro!
the end result looks awesome btw!
Jocko Willink talks about rushing in without proper assessment and preparation in his books and podcast. Basically letting that awesome aggressive attack mode (which is great when it comes to facing challenges in life) prevent from properly assessing the situation, time, and mission to come up with a proper plan to execute.
Really awesome that you caught that and learned from this experience. It’s humbling and takes humility. Well done sir.
Seeing this video late via CZcams recs but the timing was really ideal for me. I am in the early phases of planning my MA project and the things I find most interesting/satisfying are not well-aligned with how we're being graded. It's very tempting to go "Well I'm going to put a ton of effort into the graded parts AND the stuff I love, then!" but there's just no time. Thanks for sharing with us.
Wow. To me, as a Blender beginner and total noob this is proof that when you raise the bar sometimes you get blinded by yourself. Talking like this about a creation that to me could be the absolute peak of my learning and goals is amazing in it self. I hope he has perspective enough to appreciate his finished piece more than it seem. It looks sooo good.
We've all been there man! It's a good lesson to learn and be reminded of for every artist.😁
Also.. What I learnt from my latest project is, that I have been doing too many projects that don't excite me or teach me anything new. I finally noticed when in my latest project I got to experiment and learn new techniques.
I had been so caught up in the day to day stuff that I forget to nourish my own creative spark.😊
Thank you I've learn from this video breakdown a lot.
Exactly my situation right now, me and my team have one month to go when we need about 4. I feel this so much. Thanks for sharing this. Helped me realize I can try and see the good in the situation as well even if we will not meet the vision we intended for the game. We have learned a lot since we started and had fun times.
Man i bet! Good luck on your project!
To this day, whenever I feel like I NEED to finish a render, I keep reminding myself of that one quote from Toy Story: “You can’t rush art.”. It works *_every time._*
Now I do get the need for having to put out something within a nick of time, but with that ideology in mind the work doesn’t turn out to be a bothersome anymore - at least for me, that is.
This is great! I also need to rewatch, such a great film
@@pwnisher - can vouch. That movie alone made me pretend all my toys were alive when I was a kid. 🤣
What's better is most of the animators for that movie had no prior experience with computer animation.
You have no idea how comforting this video was bruh. I thought things got easy with skill but, you still feel pressured to be ambitious and deliver. Very humbling..
Hey Clint. Thank you for this! It was really my last hard learned lesson. Thank you!
Man, Recently had this issue, I've never faced this level of creative upset until I planned an ambitious horror short movie for a final college project, after facing time constraints, I felt so down after compromising and downsizing my project, I felt your pain.
As an allround creator I feel you so much mad respect love your work keep up the grind 💫
Great vid my man!
Great video man x
you r so cool and helpful and THANKS for everything I appreciate your insight!
great video man,
thanks for sharing!
I've defiantly felt this way with a few of my projects, but coming away knowing more than when you stared, it helps make it hurt less
i love how similar my experience is to yours. thank you.
Thank you man’ you inspire us.
As an industrial designer, I can relate to so much of this. Nearing the end of my senior capstone I am currently working 12-15 hours a day to accomplish my vision. Getting burnt out. This video was exactly what i needed.
Damn Clint I don't know if you will read this but your influence on the 3D community is insane! You literally sparked the choice in my career path since the video you made with Freddie named "Sandcastle Sensei" which showed you can become good results with just the resources you have. You're an inspiration to any young filmmaker/compositor/creative and it's very educating to see how you handle such stressful situations. Thank you again for everything you have done.
This was wholesome and quite relatable!
Nice work, dude!
Thx for the video! Very inspiring, I think it'll take me out of the same situation in the future for several times for sure)
I was in the same situation and in the end i lost the job bc i tried to match my expectations but should've stopped when I reached the clients expectations.
Perfectionism is a creativity killer
That looks incredible man, the helmet in particular really stands out to me.
time management is a tricky thing to master, and people need to sleep, but i find that i can almost always survive on way less sleep than i think i can. forcing myself to take random breaks during a long project seems to help me focus better when i come back to it. i might see things differently and realize just as you did that certain details are just not needed for the specific shot. i always appreciate the honesty and passion that you put into your videos. it helps show what real working conditions can be like. mistakes are inevitable, but how a person chooses to view those mistakes, either by dwelling on them and possibly getting burned out or learning from them and moving past them can make or break someone.
as always, i look forward to the next project you choose to tackle.
Many thanks 🙏🏼 and yeah totally agreed! We gotta learn from them mistakes :)
Thanks for this video, I tend to be notoriously bad for the same sort of mis-judging of time needed for projects. Might finally start to think realistically about what I want to achieve in a certain time frame vs what I can achieve in a certain time frame.
Great work Clint! Yeah I’m studying game development right now in college and one thing our professors always emphasize before we chose our team ideas for a game we will make is scope. They tell us to think critically about the scope of the project compared to how much time we have in the semester and if our ideas are too grand and wild they’ll just straight up tell you you can’t do it in a semester because you’ll run out of time. So I can relate. It pays to have a plan before you start a project.
I'm currently doing 4 3D scenes for my final Uni project and I'm completely in the same position, I've had longer but took on so much. This really helped knowing that I'll learn from it and be able take all this into my next project!
Man thank you very much for this.I really planned on competing on the infinite journeys but couldn't because ambition but I have learned it and now I am ready for the next challenge. Love from SRILANKA.!!
Honestly, this looks fucking amazing!!
Super cool results and amazing way to do the product placement. This is the right way to use marketing on CZcams, when they allow the creator to create a nice story around the products and give value to the viewer, I'm really interested now in that mocap suit.
this video was a needed one truly :)))
This is incredible!!
Man, this same exact thing was gunna happen to me with my final, but I changed the project to something more simple, and now I’m adding great little details and fine-tuning my work.
Wow, you're best cg generalists I've ever seen, I hope I will do same art stuff
That's literally the exact problem I have with every project I do :D As you said, being aware of it helps but I think it's a gradual process because every project comes with different challenges and obstacles. But it's getting better. For dynamic machines I had to use a render farm to get it finished and for Infinite Journeys I didn't. I consider this as success and step in the right direction :D
Buuuuut your stuff is absolutely amazing though!!
@@evengreven5515 :D thanks!
Awesome video bruh!
I really love this video. It's not easy to recognize our own pitfalls, let alone share them with the community. I do think your final render is absolutely incredible and highly inspiring.
I submitted my IJ render with about 5 minutes to spare. I did not manage my time well. I work full-time as a videographer/editor, and my excuse for IJ was, "I look at a computer all day, I don't want to look at a computer any more today." So I wouldn't work on IF enough during the weekdays. I waited until the final day to render a bunch of passes that took several hours, only to find that it was all bad due to an error, an error I caused by overlooking some details. I had to re-render at much lower quality, which hurt.
Ultimately, I didn't like my idea enough. The idea I loved was far too ambitious for my current skill-set, so I went with something easier. I do think I would have found the time if I loved my idea, so that's my biggest takeaway from this experience.
Can't wait for the next one!
What a great story and surely highlights the issues 3d modellers have
great job dude !!
The render looks amazing
Thanks for sharing. Not only for showing how you created your clip but also telling the things you've learned. I'm prettig sure that last part can be (should) applied in other fields, like mine: IT.
At work we've gone through a bunch of this sort of thing with only having a few days to maybe a week to get everything done. The biggest thing for me is having a vision ahead of time where a project is going rather than compartmentalizing each section. That way I can focus on big to medium to small details across the entire spectrum of what needs to get done (modeling, texturing, lighting) to avoid compartmentalizing each section as a stand alone process.
Great video and message. And of course, this applies to all disciplines. I went through very much the same thing years ago when scoring an indy film for a friend. It turned out fine, but I left a lot of "important" ideas behind.
Thank You for this!
suerly learned a lot from this video
I love your lessons and art breakdowns. Informative, straight to the point, and NO flashing "PLZ SUBSCRIBE AND HIT THE BELL" pop-up animations every five minutes (like so many people do), only when actually needed.
I have a lot of ambitious unfinished projects too...
It’s very helpful when accomplished artists like yourself are honest about how long and tedious your projects can be. I get the sense a lot of artists are dishonest about how they created something in “1hr”. Then it makes us all wonder why the hell we’re taking so long to create something similar.
amazing, the details are very importan. look like real bro..good job.
Love it!
More importantly the quotes:
"I WAS PROCASTINATING FROM DOING THE WORK I WAS AFRAID OF, BY DOING THE WORK I ENJOYED."
"A LESSON LEARNED TOO LATE, IS BETTER THAN THE ONE NEVER LEARNED."
Thanks for sharing your workflow, the challenge and every other thing in between.
