- Conspiracy theorist Alex Jones was ordered to liquidate his personal assets in federal court on Friday. Jones must use those assets to pay the families of victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre after they won their defamation suits against him in Texas and Connecticut. Jones owes nearly $1.5 billion for repeatedly claiming the mass shooting was a hoax.

Good point. ^th Amendment?
Yup. 8th amendment. I don’t like Alex Jones but that judgement is BONKERS. Anyone with a brain knows it.
@canonicalcritic The 8th Amendment prohibits the government from imposing cruel and inhuman punishment, excessive bail, and excessive fines. The government wasn't party to this action, therefore the 8th Amendment does not apply to this judgment. That's Constitutional Law 101. 🙄🙄🙄
@@chrismorgan9153 which party issues fines? The judicial branch of government. That’s 11th grade social studies and civics 101.
@canonicalcritic They issue fines as punishment for criminal acts. The government is an actual party in a criminal action. The government was not a party to this action. The judgment is not a criminal fine. The government will not collect or retain a dime of the judgment. It's funny that you think your middle school level class trumps law school...lol.
Alex deserves it. Bwahaha..
If there were real justice he would be homeless by the end of the month. But this is a start at least.
You must not live in the U.S.
@@MeaOblonsky-in3uu I do indeed live in the US. And in reality. Do you live in reality? Must not.
Words and actions have consequences.
And people have a right called the 8th amendment which protects them from unjust fines and punishments. A judgement that high for slander and libel? Pharmaceutical companies whose products have killed thousands of people have paid a fraction of that when there was evidence of coverup and all. They all claimed the fines were still too high under the 8th amendment. I expected Jones to pay between 10-100 million for the case. When they said 1 billion I realized it was nonsense. It’s absolutely nonsense to make a person pay that for “mean words” or for denying the death of some children. Crazy or not, society needs people like Alex Jones and he has gone off the rails but he’s also been scarily accurate on some of wildest things he has said these last 30 years. This is a hit job to discredit him. And it’s OBVIOUS to anyone with half a brain. You don’t just throw a Billion Dollar judgement at someone who said mean or untrue things. And yet…it happened. And people like you exercising their right to disagree with him, don’t get how ludicrous it is to allow the Justice system to do that to ANYONE.
Only when you disagree with them is it a “just world.” It is our responsibility as citizens to uphold the constitution whether or not we like or dislike the person being charged or the mean things they say. This judgement was outrageous and anyone with half a brain knows it.
@@canonicalcriticIf you’re dishonest sure. Defamation, slander, or threats just aren’t covered by the constitution. Plenty of Supreme Court cases to back that up.
@@TheEndingAbyss you’re absolutely right and I absolutely agree with you. I was not referring to freedom of speech. By constitution I was referring to the 8th amendment which protects citizens against excessive fines, penalties, and judgements. By contrast many pharmaceutical companies flat out lied and covered it up to make billions off of dangerous drugs that killed thousands of people paid less than 100 million from civil judgements. The judgement against AJ, like him or not, was excessive and unprecedented especially considering the allegations. It made any sane person raise their eyebrows.

Just letting you know that _"$1 in 1989 is equivalent in purchasing power to about $2.53 today"_ and the $ in this case is USD.
That means that the 1 Billion USD paid by Exxon equates to 2.53 Billion USD today.
They were initially sentenced to pay a much larger sum, but appeals got it dropped and on at least the last appeal it was taken into account that Exxon had spent estimated 2 Billion USD on the cleanup.
So Exxon was actually paying estimated 3 Billion USD which would equate to 7.59 Billion USD today.
