- Emergency crews in Oregon rescued 28 people Friday after they were stuck for about half an hour dangling upside down high on a ride at Oaks Park, a century-old amusement park. Portland Fire and Rescue said firefighters worked with engineers to manually lower the ride. All riders were being evacuated and medically evaluated, and there were no reports of injuries.

That’s one of my worst fears when going on those rides….. man imagine that headache
Same goes for airplanes. I don't like going on airplanes. I rather drive or take a fast train. I know trains can malfunction as well, but it's better being on the ground than up in the clouds.
An amusement park ride is like a reverse lottery with better odds.
That’s a great comparison.
You are far more likely to get into a car accident than to have this happen to you, yet, you never complain about how you’re never gonna get into a car. Grow up.
You have a 1 in 750 million chance of dying on a roller coaster.
Same goes for airplanes. I don't like going on airplanes. I rather drive or take a fast train. I know trains can malfunction as well, but it's better being on the ground than up in the clouds.
Closing the park.
Also reads They don’t want a bunch of witnesses to the carnage.
What carnage? The closure of the park was likely to let the first responders do their thing without being interrupted by the gawkers, or blocked by the gawkers.
Also, the restraints were locked in place despite the power failure, so the riders were secured.
To be fair... while there would be many people who would want to see such glorious carnage unfold right before their eyes, it is at least acceptable to offer an exit to those that don't. I'm sure both can happen at the same time.
Total Dramarama Queen!!! Some be !!
@@trevorjensen2706According to riders, people had blood vessels in their face burst from being upside-down for so long.

Got stuck on a amusement park ride as a child very scary while my younger cousin next to me was so happy and giggling and said let's go again when they got us out. Glad they were all rescued and safe
They didn't want no witnesses 😂
Bingo!
So they did want some witnesses?
@@StamfordBridge get a life
That's a horrible position
And people laugh at me when I refuse to go on amusement park rides...
I wouldn't🤷🏾♂️
This is a carnival/fair not an amusement park. Amusement and theme parks are extremely safe with almost excellent track records. They spend big bucks to have high quality safe and reliable rides. Fairs and carnivals are where you are taking a risk and see the majority of ride incidents.
@@AFCompanyyeah ok. Happens at amusement parks also. I've witnessed one in person
I was one of those who laughed at you.
I apologize.

@@doughboy4681 what large scale amusement/theme park have you seen this happen at?
Are they upside down? I cant tell. If so, that is extremely dangerous to be in that position for too long. I probably would have passed out almost immediately.
Yeah, they were.
Hi honey ,…I’m just hanging out at the amusement park …..
"Are you not entertained!?!?"
Couldn’t pay me to get on one of those rides
Ok
Oh hell no!
I went on this indoor “platform” ride at kings island one year where the whole platform went upside down (was supposed to) just for a few seconds; THE PRESSURE! IT FELT LIKE MY EYEBALLS WERE GONNA POP OUT OF MY HEAD! I hope those people were ok? The pain of being completely upside down like that is horrible!
I’ve ridden this ride before. It’s called ‘The Eye Popper’.
Just hanging around at the amusement park.
That is scary! I saw a water ride get stuck and we did not get on it.
Oh my GOD
Sooooo how long before they were rescued???
Half an hour
That is absolutely terrible that it took that long .
@@courtneylittlepage8372 It would be scary to hang there for 30 minutes, no doubt. The news report left out some important details. Fortunately, nobody was physically injured that we know of. It could have ended up much worse than it did.
The fire department had drilled (practiced) rescues from this very ride, meaning the park was prepared with a response plan with local authorities. This is what a professionally run amusement business does for all their rides. That paid off with only 30 minutes to rescue.
Amusement rides are industrial machines designed to safely convey guests on fun and exciting experiences. When properly designed even their fail states are controlled and predictable. However, big industrial machines, even when well maintained, sometimes fail, as likely happened here. The people running the rides and the park should be trained and ready to respond, as seen here with the quick work from first responders. The park will be paying that bill, too.
My first job was at Six Flags Over Texas, back in 1982, in Ride Operations. The safety training was serious, and people got fired for breaking the safety rules, no exceptions. When I got to driving coasters we had to pass written and verbal tests as well as mentored driving time. We had procedures for everything, from stuck trains to lightening to severe weather to mechanical failures. Later, as a ride manager, I made sure my crews were trained and tested and ready.
I have seen unprofessional amusement operations, in parks and at mobile carnivals. I have seen a man killed working on a ride actively in use with guests on board, and he was the amusement carnival company's owner! I am very leery of these smaller operations, and have routinely read of dangerous failures at these kinds of businesses. Fixed parks are usually inspected by state engineers, adding to their likely reliability.
Most actual harm comes from people not doing their jobs. If the people you see don't look attentive, then there's a decent chance there are other risks at hand.
This park, as I see it from this and other stories about this incident, did their job right. They had trained with the local fire department, handled the park operations correctly (for a small park that means closing), and so saw to everyone's safety. To me that makes this park a safe and desirable place to go for a fun day!
Thank you gor your comment.
Some states do inspections of mobile fair and carnival rides after each set up. I'm am not clear how common this is or the quality of the inspectors and inspection.
I respect your experience working at amusement parks but if a functioning rescue operation takes 30 minutes, that's all the more reason to never step on these again. 30 minutes stuck hanging upside down is absolutely terrifying and I'm still not convinced they are all fully okay.
@@ashwinramaswamy4059 30 minutes, all things considered, is an amazingly short amount of time. In that time the FD arrived at the scene, hooked up, and started taking guests down, to the last person. In similar situations these rescues have taken 1-3 hours.
Certainly, knowing the risk is part of the decision. I, too, would pass on such things for much the same reason, even knowing that it might be as "short" as 30 minutes. I ride all kinds of roller coasters, knowing their fail states would not leave me inverted. These machines that can stop and rest in any position are a different story.
It is entirely possible the ride did not fail mechanically. Rides like these have double if not triple redundant control systems. Even back in the 80s at SFOT we had rides where two separate computers had to agree on the state of the ride. If they got out of sync the ride would stop, often wherever it was in the cycle (not counting what was left to gravity). We had engineers from the ride manufacturers on-site for a year with some of these rides, solving problems on the spot. The controls, though, were always "default to safe", so even though inconvenient, the guests were never in direct physical danger. The rescue ops might be risky, such as here, but practice and planning really help to mitigate the risk.
It is possible in this case that the ride control systems lost track of a critical sensor, or actually hit a logic bug, kicking into safe mode and stopping the ride. In many (but not all) such conditions there are manual overrides available to the ride technicians (not the everyday operators) to slowly return the ride to the loading position.
So, yes, there are considerations. If you look at a ride and can imagine it being stuck in some uncomfortable, inconvenient position, then definitely pass. Even the anxiety of such worry is not worth it. There are other rides, and good parks have a variety of rides for every type. Always easier to avoid than get on and find out the hard way. World ain't gonna end coz you didn't ride that ride. Be safe.
Speaker: "I feel bad for them"
Also speaker: proceeds to the next ride
This is why I don’t ride roller coasters, stuff like this always happens.
Back in the 80s I was at Kings Island, rode the King Cobra. The very next trip on the coaster derailed. You're literally testing boundaries every time. Age requirements should be in place bcz children can't make that decision. Yes, I rode the zipper as a kid to help fight my fear of heights but I'm very lucky nothing more happened but as an adult I ride the Mr Freeze at Six Flags & messed my neck up.
I don't do coasters anymore but miss it.
It's like the kid who lost his head on that water slide. They designed it with a chain link enclousre over the top, just in case anyone flies up, so they won't fall over the edge. Hey genius design engineers - the head of the occupants are the highest point on the water sled. So what, pray tell will hit the chain link if they fly up? They found out
That's not a roller coaster and stuff like this rarely happens.
Not on roller coasters. Roller coasters rarely get stuck on loops. If anything, they might get stuck on the lift hill, but that's about it.
@@MaxPaxton It's basically a water roller coaster, and it went on intil the fatal flaw inveitably happened, and they closed the ride. That's a 100% failure rate (on ride designed wrong and 1 ride failed and killed someone as was inevitable) It was just a matter of who would die
Some manual override release switch for the hydraulics. Where the engineers at?
It took them about a half hour to get there & release the hydraulics.
@@harriedsloth4399 pretty much they aren't prepared or ready for these type of incidents. Day to day with the machinery.

@@Dakid015 Thanks the fire department could of helped in some cases bucket truck might help.
This is one of the newest rides at Oaks Park. It’s only been there a few years. It replaced “Screaming Eagle,”which was similar, because of safety concerns due to the same ride breaking apart/failing at another location. I rode it when it first opened, it was fun but these types of rides seem to have more issues than others.
Funny how they always get stuck in the worst possible position.
Or maybe it's that pictures and videos of broken down rides only get attention and go viral if they are of a ride stuck in the worst position.
'Amusement Park' is more of a name than a description.
Well I was amused. Lol
It's more of a description for anyone who isn't in it.
That is amusing, but definitely not for those folks hanging upside down.
Turn your phone over and all is good…

i can’t believe i’ve gone on this ride. luckily this didn’t happen when i got on, but seeing this later gives me chills down my spine.
Yikes!!!
I’d pay extra for that ride.
I remember going to a local amusement park that came to my town and they had one ride with carts that flipped upside down and around... the belt on the cart me and my friend was in came unloose and the cart door that was supposed to be locked opened up.... I just remember me and my friend holding on for dear life and screaming stop the ride but we had to through the whole experience .... that scared me and I said as a kid never again.....
I use to work there many years ago
Do you know what the name of that ride is?
Scary.
Unbelievable...wow ! Law suit
Reminds me of that horror land "amusement park" from the Goosebumps books
How many injuries?
Zero
How the hell would that get stuck like that
Omg 😮
I bet at least one of those people will find there way back on it
So scary.
Oh my.... very risky those places
0:41 Sounds like the whole PLACE lost power, let alone one ride.
No safety inspection! It was the first day opening!
They've been rescued.
Hell to the no!! that's why i don't mess with them ride's especially at them small carnivals.
You can die from being upside down for too long.
This is the last time the amusement park will ever have this ride… They might shut the whole park down
This is exactly what happened to John Edward Jones when he got stuck upside down for over 24 hours in the Nutty Putty Cave in 2009. A tragic and gruesome way to go.
Glad the riders were extracted within half an hour.
Scary😮
I’ve been on that ride lol I live right by it
Oaks Park is up the street from me . They just put that new ride up and were posting about employees trying it out before opening day. My friend and i were going to go ride on it. They have a lot of company picnics and punk shows in the roller rink.
What's the name of the ride? I want to look it up to see how it normally functions.
My godness..Thank God I'm way past that stage in my life, lol!

Does not mean it actually happened. Two Boening jets recently….
You would think that they would make it so that they could disengage the ride at the pivot so that it would swing back to upright position without power.
wow where is the rest of this cover up lawsuit
Unaware passerby; What’s that? Yellow rain?
" Let's go again Daddy " ..
Got stuck on The Big Dipper once for almost 2 hours . They couldn't stop it so we went around and around. Not cool after 10 minutes. Thank god i was young.
