March 6,7,8, 2000, just five guys on the island with the stones to paddle out including the boatman, no jet skis, no vests, no photogs, just us and 15-25' faces. Would have loved to have a a few guys like Dorian or Healey to share it with. The exclusivity is what keeps the experience pristine. The Ranch, Tavarua, glad I got to experience the golden age of these places.It was desire, not deep pockets that got me there.
I surfed on the mainland growing up and every once in awhile (on Saturdays the only day we were allowed to even ask to surf) we would all wait on word whether we could surf in Tavarua, in our own country, in our ancestors waters. We had every means to get there. We live there. But we were not allowed because "Oh there are tourists in the water today, try again next Saturday" Imagine that happening to you at your 'local' break. Fuck that exclusivity bullshit. I know it's not the tourists' fault, but not once did I hear anyone say "oh yea let the locals who have lived here thousands of years surf with us instead of coming buy in a boat and going back home all their life".
In Fiji we share everything. That is our culture. And that has become our downfall. We share and they take and don't give back.
I'm glad you guys got great waves in Tavarua and a great experience in Fiji. I hold nothing against tourists. But owners of Tavarua did a shit maneuver and so did the politicians they bought for that license. I understand that people don't want a crowded lineup. But I'm sorry, my culture shares and tries so make everyone happy. And yes I have a chip on my shoulder because I left Fiji before it was opened so that we locals can surf. And it's not like its locals first in Fiji. Everyone is equal in the lineup.

Shane Dorian what about us Fijian come to Hawaii or USA and say dont surf Pipeline because its exclusive to Fijian only. You come to our island and isolate our resources dang makes me mad and we should stop these resort operating in Fiji with this kind of attitudes.

+Dave Its Cloudbreak. That angle is rarely shown on videos. Look up "Filthy Friday: The Best Of Fiji In Five Minutes" You will see more of that angle. It is when the wave connects from the outside. Really hard to catch and be in position for. But it is Tavarua. :)
