    I'd like to add a few things that may help. I removed the throttle body so I could at least see the sensor. 4 bolts and 2 connections - easy stuff to do and a good opportunity to clean your throttle body. Torque throttle body back to 8Nm during re-assembly. The crankshaft sensor uses an E8 socket and they're cheap enough to buy if you don't already have one. I purchased OEM VDO sensor since this such a labor intensive job and you don't want to do it twice. I was able to remove the sensor with only loosening the bracket that shares the starter bolt however I was not able to get the new sensor in without removing it. Use a E10 socket and remove it. The biggest help that I can offer is this: once you have the sensor out, buy a M6 X 1.0 (pitch) X 60mm (length) stud (threaded rod) - got mine at Ace Hardware and screw that in the mounting hole which will guide the install of the sensor itself. Once the sensor is installed the rubber O ring will hold it in place- then remove the stud and replace with the original bolt. I dropped the bolt 3 times trying to fit the bolt because you can't actually see the mounting point. That added a whole lot of extra time and additional frustration retrieving it. Using the stud technique fixed that problem. Finally, take the necessary time using wire, zip ties and/or bungee cord to move the other wrapped wired/hoses out of the way so that you can see what you're doing.

      I wish I saw this before I replaced my crankshaft position sensor. I bought it from a parts distributor and it wasn’t OE VDO or OEM. after I replaced my starter and got a new key and cas and dme synced it still wouldn’t start and gave code p1727(CPS). I thought surely it couldn’t be my CPS as I just changed it. After a couple more days I tried to started a couple more times, and it try to fire, but never actually started. Though, this it gave me a new code p138f (also CPS) so I reach and take it out and compare it to a genuine part online and they look completely different. It fit but was not up to BMW spec apparently. Hope this helps anyone who might see.

      I’m replacing my starter so since I’m there already might as well replace the crankshaft position sensor. The car is running fine but I’m going to bootmod3 the car and tune stage 2.
      Question since I’m changing out the crankshaft position sensor do u think I might as well change the camshaft position sensors??
      They are in the front of the engine and easy to get to. What do u think?? Should I leave them alone?

    • @Marty09933

    Hey bro? Was your car going on a limp mode when your crankshaft sensor went bad?

    • @Marty09933
      @Marty09933  Před 4 lety

      N54 E92 I can really remember I don’t think so but when I came to a stop it would pop into neutral sometimes

    • @stocktrader1929
      @stocktrader1929 Před 4 lety +7

      When mine went bad, it did the following:
      1. Transmission code
      2. Car went into limp mode
      3. Stumbled a lot and would not change gears
      Sometimes you could restart the car and drive for a few miles, but then after that it would go back into limp mode and drive slower than a golf cart. After doing some research, turns out the transmission also uses this particular crankshaft position sensor to calculate the spin shaft speed for the transmission, so you will get a sister transmission code error.
      We replaced the crankshaft position sensor by putting the car on a lift and felt around for the sensor plug, then used an e10 or an e12 socket to remove the one bolt that holds it. We installed the new sensor and tightened the bolt to around 14 Foot Pounds "19NM" ******* Equation to convert Newtons to Foot Pound is: 1 Foot Pound X 1.354 = 1.354 Newton Meters
      After replacement, we deleted all codes and drove for 200 miles. The cripple mode stopped and the transmission sister codes vanished. I hope this gives you more insite. I experienced this and I am a real person who ran into this nightmare and I hope this helps you. The part was about $45 bucks online, part being crankshaft position sensor and a local mechanic I guided on how to install it charged me $75 bucks. $125 in grand total to stop that nightmare.
