Smoking engine? Check piston and rings for excessive play.

  • If your engine is smoking check the piston for excessive play. Remove the cylinder head and rock the piston back and forth. There should be some resistance but if you see major play then get the engine specs and find the tolerance to measure the rings, piston and cylinder.

    Piston is always smaller on the. Pin line, tighter fit cross wise,,,, that is, thrust side, across block

    Depending on the manufacturer that may be more than just excessive TBH that looks beyond the service limit!
    you may need a new piston w/ rings, and honed cylinder.

    No, that movement is correct because the engine you're touching is cold. When it heats up, rings expand.

      Well…… actually the rings were bad. This was a trashed unit and the clearances were way off. The engine smoked and after testing, we found the rings and cylinder were very worn. A lot of piston slap.
