  • Top 10 Actors You Totally Forgot Were British
They’re paid to pretend, and they certainly fooled us. For this list, we're counting down the most notable cases in which an actor has become so synonymous with American roles, it's often forgotten that they're actually from the UK! How many of these famous faces did you have placed on the wrong side of the pond?

Not knowing Hugh Laurie is British would take some spectacular ignorance. 😶
A Bit of Fry and Laurie, Blackadder, Jeeves and Wooster- Laurie was more than well established in British comedy before House MD.

Few people outside of the English-speaking world, with the possible exception of The Netherlands, Germany and the Scandinavian countries, knew who Hugh Laurie was before the 'House' gig.
Yes, Americans are part of the English-speaking world, but they're, by and large, insular.
The turning point - when British actors became sought after - was Band of Brothers. That's when film-makers in The USA started tapping cheaper, accomplished talent. Damian Lewis's performance blew American minds into smithereens.
That's when, thanks to Spielberg, 'The Money' realised their bucks had more bang if they ventured abroad. They got talent which was as good or better, without the arse-ache of working with their own.
The number of non-Americans within the film-making industry caused an existential crisis in The USA.
Singer's mind was blown; as were the minds of many Americans, when it was revealed that Laurie was British, because Singer was adamant that he wanted an 'American'!
In short, being ignorant is not a failing; it's only remaining ignorant which is problematic. Hugh Laurie ought to have got a mention.

Damian Lewis does a workman-like flat American accent in Band Of Brothers. Nobody would ever guess. But for my money Dominic West's accent in The Wire is the very best I've ever heard from a true Brit. Apart from a stumble or two in the first episodes he speaks "American" with the complete range of tones, modulation and well, the wanton and careless abandon of a native speaker. I was amazed.

How can "House, M.D."'s Hugh Laurie not be on this list? I never even KNEW he was British until I heard him speak outside the show. The same w/ (although I HATE the saga) "Twilight"'s Edward (whatever the actor's name is). He plays an American, but he's British. In fact, I heard (I could be wrong, but it's what I heard) that he didn't even have a voice coach for the admittedly great American accent he did in those films.

Including Christian Bale on this list I feel is pushing it, since his first big breakthrough role was the Stephen Spielberg movie Empire of the Sun, where Bale played an English boy losing contact with his parents when the Japanese invaded the Asian country where his father worked as a diplomat. His father being played by Anthony Andrews and Nigel Havers also being in the film (previously known for Chariots of Fire at that time - another English film, about Richard Bannister and the race for the record on the mile), and not the least Bale used his English accent all through the film, I doubt many people thought of him as anything other than English.

I looked through all of Donald Sutherland's films and there was one being filmed in England about the time Kiefer and his sister were born. Just happening to be in England at birth doesn't make you English, especially when your parents aren't and they take you right back home. That one was a poor example. Do you consider Hugo Weaving African because he happened to be born in Nigeria to English parents?

  • @BeeWhistler
    @BeeWhistler Před 6 lety

Dominic West I only thought of as English, since all I've seen him in is A Christmas Carol and A Midsummer Night's Dream, Christian Bale I knew about because I first saw him in Empire of the Sun and because I was always bummed out that he didn't use a different accent voicing Howl seeing as how the character is actually Welsh, and Carey Mulligan I only think of as British because of Sally Sparrow. So mostly I think I'm just not keeping up with their work...

I've always thought Christian Bale does the best American accent among non-North American actors.
Andrew Lincoln's American accent has improved over the years. In the first couple seasons of The Walking Dead you could hear his British accent slip in every so often, but not in the later seasons.

This sort of self delusion reminds me of a former Speakef of the House of Commons when he complained of a Scottish Member of Parliament's Broad Scottish dialect saying he couldn't understand a word she was saying. The Speaker replied in his own lyrical Welsh accent "This House has always been rich in accents. I only wish I had one myself!"
