I think the below needs to be addressed because there are so many cources out there and scams!
⚠️First of all, a TEFL certificate needs to be authenticated if you want to teach in places like China. So, if you're going to sign up for some unaccredited TEFL course your certificate can't be authenticated. You can just as well create and print your own certificate. If anyone tells you (school, recruiter or the TEFL provider) that the certificate does not require authentication, please be wary and do more research on them. There will always be a regulatory body and an accreditation linked to any certificate. Regardless of which country a course is completed.
⚠️Secondly, a TEFL course, because it is accredited, needs to be regulated and students assessed. Assessments for TEFL courses are done through assignments associated with the practical work as an EFL teacher. There are a clear syllabus, course outcomes and assessment criteria for each module of the course. A TEFL course is not completed in just a day or a week. You are not just going to enrol, read through a file and have your certificate. Again, students need to be assessed and achieve a certain grade to pass the assessment. Most of the big TEFL accredited training providers have both in-class and online courses available. And you are allowed to question the TEFL provider's accreditation and if they refuse to disclose this information they are probably not accredited and regulated.
⚠️Thirdly, real and legit TEFL courses (or any course for that matter) do come in various price ranges. Do expect and prepare to pay a bit more than you'd hope for. As they are accredited and regulated. To get these courses accredited takes a lot of time, involves mountains of paperwork and costs the provider an arm and a leg. I'm not saying good deals are not worthy, just be wary. Do your research.
⚠️Fourth, and the biggest red flag. No individual can get you a TEFL certificate. A TEFL certificate is provided through an accredited and regulated service/training provider.
Do your research before just signing up for the first TEFL certificate offer you see. Ask for proof of accreditation, check who regulates the provider in that jurisdiction. Remember depending in the country you going to teach in you need to get your TEFL certificate authenticated just like your degree and police clearance. Don't fall victim to the endless scams and unaccredited online courses.
Don’t Just go with a TEFl course I or somone else recommends. Make sure to do your research. And keep in mind that you may have to authenticate your TEFL certificate the same way as your degree and police clearance.
FYI; International Open Academy is a UK TEFL/TESOL course. Keep this in mind if you are planning to teach in China and need to have the certificate notarised.
