FF16 Eikon of Fire boss battle. - Hry
The way Archduke Rosfield is murdered in this scene really caught me off guard and hit hard. I assumed he was going to die, but he doesn't go down in a blaze of glory or anything, just unceremoniously beheaded while he was distracted, trying to make sure his son lived... it's brutal and poignant.
I was expecting maybe him holding back soldiers and then stabbed in the back by the knight commander. I was not expecting a beheading. Kinda strengthen the point that this is a full on dark mature story
It makes sense given the context and setting. There's no sort of dragged-out death or torture that's being made here. No sort of unruly beatings. Just a swift, clean decapitation of the Archduke, since it's just part of the invaders' job.
Is he beheaded ? I though he was just stabbed ?

Clive's voice-acting during Ifrit's beatdown is so raw and visceral that it's chilling.
It legitimately sounds like you're listening to someone watching a loved one being brutally murdered in front of them. It feels real.
This game is gonna be a masterpiece.
Funny story, I just found out through the Kinda Funny interviews that the actor for Clive having such raw acting here is because he was actually greiving for his father, who passed away during the recording of this game

I was left in utter awe throughout this entire sequence. The visuals, the intensity, the insane cinematography, the emotion, the _MUSIC..._ it gave me chills. A game hasn't done that to me in a very, very long time.

I haven't felt my stomach drop like this since Joel's daughter's death in TLOU1. There's something inherently so awful about a child's death being depicted (almost) entirely on-screen like this, I guess? And Clive's voice acting at the end is some of the best I've heard in a while, as much as it really DOESN'T help.

Even if the brother turned into a magical fire bird, I think the most terrible part was not the depiction, but the brother's last words, begging and screaming for his older brother to help, and clive being unable to do anything but watch and scream as his brother is torn apart

I know it's on-rails but DAMN. The spectacle here is unmatched. This feels next gen in presentation, all the destruction, particles, the sheer detail on the Eikon models. This is impressive.
I love how you can see Joshua in Phoenix form really transition from “I don’t wanna fight this is scary” to “I will rip you limb from limb” at 4:59. Dam this is good.

So there's a life after Nobuo Uematsu hahah. Yeah, it's so damn epic that I can't even describe the feeling. Moreover, the background given to us prior to this fight makes it even more meaningful.
Pokemon's Dynamax raid is boring compared to Final fantasy xvi's Eikon battle The B.O.W of the BIOHAZARD series cannot be controlled in the first place.

INSANELY well-done opening act. Good god its like watching an episode of game of thrones. 30 hours in and this is still one of the best cut scenes. bravo!
how can a game have a scene and a moment in the very beginning of the actual game that rivals most end game cinematics ? this is just the beginning, the music, the feelings thats pulling in your heartstrings, everything here just after 2 hours of a DEMO of the first levels is making me care more for these characters than dozens of games after i reach the climax of the stories? :O
The fact they added his voice trough out reminding you that’s your little brother and he’s aware of everything that’s going on then fighting the suspicion that your the monster shit was heart wrenching
Just finished the demo. The beatdown was just brutal........ as if it was personal.
Edit : Just realized one thing. Iirc In FF tradition, we have one summon for each type of elemental damage. Except for one element, Fire. This is because the main purposes of Phoenix and Ifrit are different. It might be Rebirth (cycle) vs Destruction (start anew) kind of thing between these two.
maybe it was, the world turn to shit and only a handful crystals exist that are guarded by a certain number of eikons while no other eikons exist or allowed to exist
maybe there was a civil war among the eikons and it caused the crystals to malfunction and instead of giving life they suck it and the eikons that won became confused and instead of destroying the crystals they guarded them
an eikon such as ifrit that was locked into limbo for centuries could be seriously mad

I legit cried at Joshua's transformation. Poor lad. That wasn't fair. Great great Great characters and narration so far. Very engaging And Gorgeous! I'm just not completely sold yet on the combat system. I hope it'll have more depth later on.

I don’t know about you but that power move at 11:18 is about as visually haunting and beautiful as it can get. Imagine being there in person, and all you see is a giant fire bird in the sky shooting torpedoes at you
Not "just saying this". Not kidding. This is probably, for me, one of the best things I have ever played. The feeling I had in the Eikon fight and even before it in the cut scene was unlike anything I can recall. I cant wait to finish this game
Ironic that Clive transformed because he wanted to calm down his brother but Joshua ended up being more in control.
It is weird that the vision is 3rd person during the moment of Ifrit is killing Phoenix. Probably to symbolize that Clive is not in control or is someone else controlling Ifrit?
Edit: Only a minor complaint. Not a fan of winning in gameplay and losing in cutscenes. After that epic fight how easily Ifrit took down Phoenix was kind confusing. Unless it was because Joshua thought Ifrit was defeated and it was safe. So he let his guard down.

Literally just played through this part yesterday and having been a Final Fantasy fan and having played a good number of them over the years. This scene felt so unbelievably dark compared to what I'm used to. I was stunned. Not in a bad way, it's super powerful storytelling, but going from that little innocent kid we need to protect to seeing what happens to him (albeit as the Phoenix) felt utterly dark/brutal.
Josuah’s actor is Hugo from A Plague Tale. Perfect voice cast.

Bearing in mind the game mechanics, Ifrit mauling Joshua just felt... obscenely unfair. "But we beat him! With the health bar and everything!" But that really puts you in the same headspace as Clive. It's not just sudden and horrible, it feels... wrong.
I just started playing this. The grand scale boss fights are just beyond epic. The music as usual for Final Fantasy is godlike

Everything just blends together so well! You've got the absolutely EPIC eikon of fire score in the background, you've got Ifrit jumping from rock to rock, you've got Joshua in his Phoenix from shouting "stay away from me!" it just absolutely ramps up the adrenaline for the battle you're about to be involved in!

This has to be one of the best games of all time just in terms of pure spectacle if nothing else. The artists, sound designers, and animators are some of the best in the world and its all made 100x better by the awesome score

I was sad when he died. I liked him. I wonder what happened to the two guy that fought with Clive. They weren't killed by the Phoenix spawning. Maybe they survived and r in hiding
This was heavily inspired by game of thrones and the devs admitted it they put some elements on it
Spectacle and story significance aside, the fact that they just straight up went "yeah you remember Asura's Wrath? We're doing that now" and decided to be a QTE-laden downright spectacular rail shooter for this fight was just fantastic. And with the spectacle of it all? It's just absolutely phenomenal. Can't wait to see how the game handles the other Eikon battles.

I'm pretty sure he's dead for good. Joshua dying is what drives the whole emotional journey of Clive for the rest of the story. Not only he has to save the world (?) but also save his soul, find a way to forgive himself. And what a setup this is, a new fresh take on the Werewolf trope, where the protagonist kills loved ones against his own will. It's seriously one of the best prologues in gaming. If they do a shitty anime "but wait Joshua's alive" it will just cheapen the story. I hope they don't.
Gotta say Ben starr has nailed the role of Clive so far. Haven't heard raw emotion from a voice actor like that in a while.

I’m confused here. At 3:59, it seems like we’re seeing someone else turn into Ifrit from Clive’s POV, but at 12:22, it’s from Clive’s POV again as Ifrit’s pummeling Phoenix. Also in a couple of the trailers, we’ve seen 2 Ifrits fight. So is this somebody else killing Joshua or is it Clive???
Pretty sure it's Clive the whole time, I just don't think he's actually in control hence his sort of 3rd person perspective of his own transformation. Could be wrong but at least Murdoch's reaction makes it seem as though Clive transformed.
Clive, utterly traumatized, may be inhabiting Ifrit without control during the intense battle, which is why he remembers it later at the campfire, but during Ifrit's beating of Joshua, his mind couldn't take it anymore (especially because it's his Eikon form enacting such a heinous act on his little brother) and Clive found a temporary home within Torgal, who has a special bond with Clive and who was witnessing from a different vantage point without the sepia wash. Clive may have special abilities to do so, he certainly seems to have a type of precog ability shown when he's older and seems to feel danger incoming and what direction.
I wonder if Elwin was like Clive, Ifrit's chosen, and didn't know it, and nothing truly ever summoned Ifrit from him (and maybe other ancestors), but something flipped the switch with Clive (intense life or death situation, fire storming about him, apydectory nearness, hard and heavy battles, a fellow Eikon summoning, and father the previous container's death, all culminating to Ifrit yanking control or being able to be summoned out to protect the host).
Clive also suffers some type of amnesia due to the trauma. I would think it might be a depersonalization added to it from trauma of transformation and trauma of being an indirect tool of kinslaying. I don't think his mother's treatment of him and from her sycophants aided his coping skills growing up, and he likely learned his form of escapism early in life.
Something I noticed or seem to notice during a rewatch is, when he's having his sudden migraine and falls to his knees, something of his tone changed, as if he were talking to himself or rather someone else to "Save him" - to save Joshua. It was said in such a grit clear way, not under breath as someone does when talking to themselves. Maybe a small part knows about Ifrit, but at the time only intrinsically and subconsciously understanding he was not alone in his body, mind, and spirit, but also not really knowing it was Ifrit.
Edit: The more I think about the Elwin thing, the more I think it may be possible he was Ifrit's Dominant. Clearly death of a Dominant is possible while they are at their most vulnerable (human form), I imagine had Clive not been forcibly transformed into the Eikon Ifrit he would have been immolated with the others and been truly crushed by falling debris. He had several close calls already that night previous. Ifrit eventually said, Nope, that's enough, and was enraged that his cozy situation of being sneakily alive and living vicariously through his Dominant was being threatened. Again.
The dog’s next to Clive when his 3’rd person sequence starts. They put that in for a reason, I’m sure. I can’t quite figure it out myself. Quite puzzling. Yoshida’s quite a big fan of mystery, so there you go.

The most stunning cutscene in the entire game imo. Fantastic scores, story beats, and acting. It’s difficult for a game to really shock me but from when the king lost his head to when ifrit impales the Phoenix my jaw was completely dropped. Ifrits first entrance is just nuts in particular.

Clive isn't Ifrit. He would know he was looking through Ifrit's eyes and the second part of the demo has him and Cid hunting down his brother and father's killer. Try the Ikonic challenge.

something in 10:04 is so nostalgic, rushing against a boss thats ready to cast death at all party members (unavoidable, maybe to prevent fighting for too long the game has set that parameter). loved that about final fantasy, i remember seeing this kind of move in 12 and 13 from bosses
Those timed attacks have been in a lot of square games (even outside of FF) since they added the active time battle system in FF4

This is by far the greatest demo with one of the best boss fights in gaming history.
Still a bit lost whether or not that was "Clive" that became Ifrit and killed his brother due to losing control ,or if it was someone else . Past trailers have shown off what appears to be two Ifrits but guess we all just have to wait until the full game 👀

That was indeed Clive as Ifrit. Ifrit is within Clive, but he also harnesses the powers of the Phoenix. Ifrit was bursting to get out which is why Clive was experiencing the pain in his head. But when Ifrit comes out, Clive is just a passenger, with absolutely no control over Ifrit's actions

That is a good question. I am also wondering if it is a full transformation or is it like Attack on Titan where the Eikon surrounds the body and the Eikon is essentially a mech. I want lore and I want it now.
I think that what happened was that ifrit had taken control from clive.

Ifrit was Clive. But Clive had absolutely no control over him and was just sort of, in him as a passenger, which explains Clive begging Ifrit to stop hitting Joshua as Phoenix

The Eikon battles just makes me want a Next-gen HTTYD game with bosses like this, and they do remind me of those “fight scenes with healthbars” videos
I love that Joshua is almost like a puppy that's trying to be tough but he actually has the power to back up his words. He also could've easily fallen into the trope of being too scared to use his powers but no, when the time came, he truly fought as hard as he could to save the kingdom. Hell, I didn't even realize the first time playing this scene that he even has a sword! Sets the stage perfectly for his personality later in the game.
But can I be honest? I hated pretty much all of the Eikon battles 😅. After the initial glam wore off, I found them chaotic and confusing. I know I died multiple times in the battle against Hugo Kupka during the very, very long Eikon battle at the Fang. I would just rather keep my human form and fight that way.
I still really loved this game, though. Already bought the first DLC and we're supposed to be getting another and I'll definitely be getting that one, too (seems it will be bigger than the first, which was already an extra two to three hours).
The story definitely has me intrigued. Did clive transform into ifrit or was it the flaming humanoid? If it was clive it seems since he cant control his transformation maybe that might explain why he wasnt chosen as the phoenix. There are also 2 ifrits as weve seen in one of the trailers. I'm so glad this releases next week
I think it’s clive. If you watch the last scene where Ifrit smashing Phoenix to pulp, you will hear Clive telling Ifrit to stop which he failed.
I think it wasn't Clive, and he wasn't Joshua either, well..he was also a phoenix but in a different body. If Clive is an Ifrit that means the phoenix should recognize him as his brother. So I think it's a different person controlling the ifrit using Clive's powers. Also at the end Clive says that he will kill him in Torgal's pov (probably), meaning he is not the Ifrit

I think it’s Clive. He doesn’t have control of Ifrit. When he’s pleading with Ifrit you see the scene through the same grainy lens as when we were in Joshua’s perspective as the Phoenix looking down at Ifrit.
@@ougazu32 It’s clive who is yet to have control over Ifrit. If you watch Garuda fight scene, clive turned into Ifrit when Garuda tried to squeeze Clive to death.

The demo made me want to smoke a cigarette when completed. And I don't even smoke.
I'll be honest, I wasn't 100% sold on this game up until trying the demo, but WOW. I loved it. I will definitely be checking this out

11:42 This scene reminds Evengelion, the scene where Bardiel take the control of the Unit 03, and then Gendo activate the Dummy Plug of the Eva 01, so Shinji watches in horror as his unit slaughters and destroys the unit piloted by a person close to him. Even the screams of Clive reminds me Shinji screaming.
Keep in mind something about this. This is 2 to 3 hours into the game, the first Eikon fight and each one is more ridiculous and epic than the last.
