At first glance, it may not look strange, but this can give us a hint about how Indian parents name their kids. So let’s explore what is up with Indian names and what it tells us about Indian society.

I was named by my mausi (aunt). She came into the hospital. Since I was always smiling as a baby, she felt that I am मनमोहक. Hence, I was named Mohak :) I love my name because of the meaning it has and because it's really unique! I always get the email IDs I want :P What's the story of your name?

My name was suggested by my late grandfather. My parents both had their names beginning with S, so they wanted to name me something pretty and meaningful with an "S". My grandfather had decided the name even before I was born: Sanjukta. It means togetherness. Since I'm a Bengali, I was given two names. My parents then decided to call me Mohor, which basically means asset or gold coin. They said I was a precious gift to them, and now that is my nick name.

I actually really love the meanings behind our Indian names. When you get to learn the meaning, sometimes it really impacts you as well how carefully your name was chosen. Sometimes it signifies hopes and wishes for the kid, blessings, sometimes what our parents/grandparents wish our life would be like, what we achieve whether success or happiness or health and prosperity...I know change is inevitable, but I hope this doesn't change too much and people still give their kids meaningful names.
The thing with Sanskrit names, or names in old languages/inspired from them is how one word, one syllable can hold such intricate meanings... I really cherish my name and it brings me joy when I think of how my grandfather chose it for me, especially now that he's not here. Thinking of it brings those memories back

When I was born my nanu managed to get a thousand Indian names starting with the letter N ( N because of my zodiac sign, also my mom and nanu have the same letter names:). It was a month-long process, they began shortlisting, from 1000 to 500, 250,100,50,25 and to 10. We had a big ritual for name-keeping and during that day around 120 people voted on the top 10, which was brought down to the top 5, and from that Nimaay was the winner with more than 50% votes alone :). The other top contestants were 2nd, Nirmit, 3rd was Nachiket, and 4th was Nitya(can't remember the 5th). Until then I was called Rishi, which was given by a cousin + it was my mom's favorite actor, It later became my pet name and is often used more than my real name. so tiring, right?

During the Cuban Missile Crisis, a man named Vasili Arkhipov pretty much single handedly saved the world from nuclear war. USA had imposed a naval blockade on Cuba in response to the Soviets stationing nuclear missiles there (barely a few hundred kms from the coast of Florida). WW3 seemed inevitable. A Soviet submarine was detected and followed by American ships in the Carribean Sea. The Americans tried to get the submarine to surface through controlled explosions but the submarine crew interpreted it as the start of the war. The launch of nuclear missiles was approved by 2 of the 3 heads of the submarine crew but the third one, Vasili Arkhipov refused to authorize the launch.

The Urban Rich People in other Asian countries like china, south korea, japan name their kids which sounds less Asian(White names) and they all have one thing in common- They want their kid to study in US or Europe: white sounding names are less likely to face racism.
