$40 Self-Heating Ion Mug - Worth It?

  • Self-heating mugs are very nice for those of us who take a while to drink our hot beverages. However, most offerings are priced at well over $100 -- even on discount! I decided to pick up the $40 ionMug from Walmart last Christmas to see whether it actually did its job or whether it was just not a good experience, and I have to say - it actually works quite well! It is able to bring my beverages to the target temperature relatively quickly and keep them there without much variation in the temperature. It charges relatively quickly and the charging coaster is easy to use. However, it can be difficult to set the temperature when the mug is full, which is a downside to the non-smart heating controls used in this budget mug. After 6 months, the mug is still working great!

Thank you for this thorough review! Another feature I appreciate and use is that when adding a hot beverage to the mug, the temperature will continue blinking until it cools to the temperature you’ve chosen. It lets me know not to take a careful sip rather than a huge swig and burn myself!

Thank you for the thorough review! I just bought the Ionmug. My primary purpose for it is to be able to warm up drinks and soups in the event of a power outage. I have a solar charging bank to help keep it charged up.

As I commented on a different review, if this is a gift for an elderly person, please don't assume that they know not to put it in the microwave. Make sure they understand and verify that. This ends exactly how you think it ends and I am now shopping for a new microwave!

Young man...wow. This was just what I was looking for. I watched 2 other videos that the reviewers were just opening their IONMUG and didn't know anymore than I did. This is an excellent, very thorough review. Hits on all everything that I need to know. Thank you for an excellent, instructive review!

I got this before seeing this review. I agree with everything you said. The Ember is 3x the price and does essentially the same thing.
    This is a bargain.

Ok 4 months later and the battery doesn't hold a charge anymore.
Still works when on the charging disk, but I guess you get what you pay for.

Simple work around, turn it on before pouring the drink, it doesn’t immediately heat up anyways.

It took me several hours to get mug to work. Finally enjoyed it for about a month. There was never a green light but there was flashing light once it was charging, once charged there was a solid light on the temperature that I chose. Yesterday it stopped warming. There is only a red light for a while but then goes off and cup is not warmed, the charger does have light as if it working. I have been unable to reach anyone. Do zI call this a dud?

I’m actually enjoying this mug more than my Ohom one. I don’t like being tethered to a charging base. Get one. 😊

As a former Ember user, I thought about getting this much cheaper alternative. Seems to be 80% as good, and far cheaper.
This is an excellent, very thorough review. Hits on all everything I was curious about as a potential buyer. Thank you!

I just got it without thinking... I work in a lab 9 hours, i drink around maybe 2 little cups in the whole night but i keep going to the microwave to heat for 15 seconds... will this help? I got like two stations im at during the night so i need something with battery when i move...

This will work well for that. You will need to put it on a charger occasionally, but you won’t need to heat up your beverage anymore. I’ll leave it on for an hour and my coffee will still be steaming.

I accidentally got my mug wet on bottom. Is it no longer usable?

Just let it dry out before charging and it should be fine
